These standards call for an information literate student to: The ILT may be used for program assessment or to test the competency of individual students. The primary focus during test development was on college students, whether graduate or undergraduate, enrolled at either a four-year university or community college. To determine if the ILT is appropriate for any population, one should consider the standards (noted above) that the ILT was created to assess. If these standards sufficiently align with the learning objectives of the information literacy program in question, the test may be considered appropriate. In addition, a potential test user should consider examining the items. If the items appear to be covering the appropriate topic areas and skills, and if they appear to be written at an appropriate level of difficulty, the ILT should be considered as appropriate for that particular population. ENIAC This machine had 1000 times the speed of electromechanical machines. It was designed to calculate artillery firing for the US Army, and was also used in calculations for the atomic bomb. Generally used for automating machining tools on the industrial scale, the first of these(just NC) generally ran using punched tape, similar to the cards of years past. These were later replaced by CNC's, which worked more like present day computers on a massive scale. We still use CNCs for machining today, though they are much more streamlined, reliable, and affordable than they once were.-1950s Mainframe Computing First introduced by IBM; that provide time sharing, multitasking and virtual memory in more advanced models. If it is not listed in the class schedule, please see our Information Literacy Requirement page for a list of classes that will fulfill your general education core information literacy requirement (IL). Please note that successful exams must satisfy rigorous criteria for evaluation, and they are not easy to pass. If you are taking the exam, it is assumed you already have the skills taught in the LIBS 1704 course, and you are familiar with the materials in the LIBS 1704: Information Navigator textbook (see About the Exam below). If you do not have these skills, there are other course options to fulfill the IL requirement. These options can be found on the Information Literacy Requirement page located on the library's website. The LIBS 1704 class, or one of our other classes, is the safer option. You will be signing up for LIBS 1504: Information Literacy Competency Exam (one credit hour). It is offered in blocks, so note which block you are signed up for. The Canvas page will be available the first day of the term you are registered for. You have one hour after closing to complete the exam. It is an online test monitoring service that WSU provides for free. Visit the WSU testing centers page for more information about Proctorio, and see below as well. Also, if you wait until the deadline to take it, last minute issues may arise, and you may miss the opportunity to take that attempt. If you are using a testing center, make sure to check their hours and days of operation. If you are using Proctorio and leave your computer, your exam attempt will be failed. Be sure to use the restroom prior to beginning the exam. This course covers the construct of information literacy and various components of the research process. For example: It is highly recommended that you read and understand the skills and concepts in this textbook before attempting the exam. It is difficult to pass the exam without a thorough understanding of the textbook. The total score possible is 100. If you receive between 70-72, it will trigger an automatic blind grade review. If you miss the first attempt deadline, you will only have one attempt left to pass the exam during the block. If you pass the first time, you are done with LIBS 1504 and have met WSU's IL requirement. If you fail it the first time, you may retake the exam one more time. Credit, or no credit, does not affect your GPA. It is an option for distance students, or local students that are concerned about using the testing center. It allows students to take the exam from home, or other location, as long as all the requirements are met. Policies for testers will remain consistent, within reason, between the physical testing centers and virtual testing with Proctorio. If you do not have these items, see laptop checkout. The study measures international differences in students’ computer and information literacy (CIL). This type of literacy refers to students’ ability to use computers to investigate, create, and communicate in order to participate effectively at home, at school, in the workplace, and in the community. In addition to student achievement, the study collects a rich array of contextual data on students' home and school environments. ICILS provides education systems and policymakers with an important data source on the contexts and outcomes of CIL-related education programs. ICILS deals with the core knowledge, skills and understanding students need to succeed in this dynamic information environment. Participating in ICILS provides countries with reliable, comparable data about young people’s development of 21st century CIL skills. Please see the individual cycle pages for further details. In most education systems, the eighth year of schooling is Grade 8, provided that the average age of students in this grade is 13.5 years or above. In education systems where the average age in Grade 8 is below 13.5, Grade 9 is defined as the ICILS target population. Read more about IEA's support for, and contribution to, SDG measures. More about the resolution adopted by the Council can be found here. ACER was responsible for designing and implementing the study in close cooperation with the IEA, and the national centers of participating countries. For the 2023 cycle of ICILS, IEA serves as the international study center. It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 10 year. It also assesses the ability of students to communicate their ideas. The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment is not based on a particular course, but on learning across multiple subjects, from kindergarten to Grade 10. Students demonstrate that they can analyze and make meaning from the texts by answering a series of selected-response questions. They then provide written responses to communicate their understanding. After choosing one option, students read a new set of texts. Students demonstrate that they can analyze and make meaning of the texts by answering selected-response questions. They then provide written responses to communicate personal connections. Leight writes from his extensive professional experience with sensitivity, guiding the reader through the often difficult emotional and sexual terrain of intimate connections. This is achieved first and foremost through honest introspection and open dialogue with one's partner. Some may find their experiences validated by the perspective Dr. Leight puts forward. Others may find themselves seriously challenged and even angry or defensive reading some of the material in this book. The intention is to stimulate thinking, challenge beliefs, and give permission to change thinking and beliefs within the context of the unique and respected perspective the reader brings to the material presented. Dr. Leight encourages men to make choices and changes based upon what feels right and what works for each unique relationship. He received his B.A. in psychology from The Johns Hopkins University, his M.S.W. from The Catholic University of America, his psychodynamic psychotherapy training from The American University, and his Ph.D. from Maimonides University. Dr. Leight is a Clinical Social Worker and Sex Therapist in private practice in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and founder of One Broward Marriage Counseling for Men. Dr. Leight has written and lectured extensively on the topics of gay male intimacy, dating, and human connections and relationships, and has served on the faculty of several universities. But for a single person, the prospect of dating and sex — while social distancing to avoid a potentially life-threatening respiratory illness — feels impossible. How do you date without touching or kissing. How do you have sex without breathing on your partner and putting each other at risk? “I’ve gone at least two months without sex or other physical connection, and even in my 50s, that’s a long time,” said one man from Austin, who asked not to be named to protect his privacy. “My only venture outside has been to walk the dogs and run a very rare errand, for Pete’s sake. Dating seems even a more remote possibility.” When the man, who is gay, raised the issue with his online therapy group, he was surprised by the compassionate response. “Over all, folks were supportive, knowing that we need connection, dating and sex,” he said. The fact that the topic hadn’t come up sooner “spoke in some ways to how inhumane the pandemic is.” A number of public health agencies have offered tips for dating and sex during the pandemic, but the New York City health department has recently updated its Safer Sex and Covid-19 fact sheet with more-detailed and descriptive advice. The new guidelines still say “you are your safest sex partner,” and that the “next safest partner” is someone in your household. However, the guidance also acknowledges that not everyone has access to an exclusive sex partner at home. People who are dating or “hooking up” should still try to minimize close contacts. Safer sex during Covid-19 also means wearing a mask and avoiding kissing. “Heavy breathing and panting can spread the virus further,” it says. A recent commentary from Harvard University researchers also recommended that people wear a mask during sex with someone from outside their household. The New York City guidelines discourage group sex, but give advice for those who do “decide to find a crowd.” “Pick larger, more open, ventilated spaces,” it states, among other things. Individuals can try to find creative alternatives to traditional sex, such as sex toys, masturbating together and sexy Zoom parties, or they could try to “make it a little kinky,” the guidelines state, suggesting, among other things, people can avoid close contact by having sex through holes in walls or other barriers. “Be creative with sexual positions and physical barriers, like walls, that allow sexual contact while preventing close face-to-face contact,” the guidelines state. If the language seems surprisingly direct, it’s supposed to be, said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, deputy commissioner for disease control at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. “Our health department has a really strong record of being very sex positive,” said Dr. Daskalakis. “Abstinence for the duration of the pandemic is not going to work. We tend not to shy away from giving people realistic recommendations. The new rules also advise people who decide to hook up to get tested monthly for coronavirus, or within five to seven days of a hookup. They caution that a confirmed case of Covid-19 or a positive antibody test isn’t definitive proof that you are immune from re-infection. Dr. Daskalakis said the tone of the updated guidelines was inspired by a 1983 pamphlet, written during the start of the AIDS crisis, called “How to Have Sex During an Epidemic,” which pioneered the public health strategy of harm reduction and safer sex. “You can’t tell people to stop being human,” said David Lauterstein, founder of the Nasty Pig men’s clothing brand in New York and an L.G.B.T. community leader who helped with the concept of the guidelines. “People are going to have sex. When they’re not educated, they’re going to make bad choices.” While the new guidelines give people detailed advice about safer sex, many single people say it’s tough to imagine even getting to the point of having sex because of the limits imposed by social distancing and the challenges of trusting other people to take needed precautions. Wendy Worthington, 45, who lives in St. George, Utah, had hoped to stay connected through online dating during the pandemic. She was excited after meeting someone on a dating app, but after some promising “witty banter” from him, she expressed wariness about meeting in person during the early stages of the crisis. The man immediately blocked her. “When that happened, it was the tip off that not everyone was going to view what’s going on the way I do or take it as seriously as I was taking it,” she said. “Most people were too nonchalant about it. I realized it was going to be an exercise in futility to try dating.” Ms. Worthington says she does not expect to go back to dating any time soon. “Now we’re not even worried about S.T.D.s so much as, I just hope you weren’t around someone who coughed on you,” she said.
