Fillmore 4.0 out of 5 stars Lance Evans has upped my knowlege of Electric Image Universe at least 10 fold. We all know that Universe is powerful software, being used on television and feature films. The folks at Electric Image and dvGarage are doing their best to make it available to animators from hobbiest to professional, but getting into the meat of the program hasn't always been easy. Lance is a teacher, and he has created a well written, well structured book that brings you along in an easy going fashion. Each topic is introduced, explained, and potential pit falls discussed. You get the feeling that Lance knows where beginners make wrong assumptions and need assistance. The only criticism I could offer would be the title. This book is a great introduction to the program, but doesn't really get into advanced topics. So is it Professional grade. You bet! You could make a sweet living using just the techniques in this book, and try your hand at more advanced animations once you've got this material under your belt.Mr. Evans book gives us an understanding of how things work better than any professor I ever had in school. I am amazed at how he has taken subjects that ramble on for 50 pages in other books, and made them crystal clear in 10 pages. And even given more information. This book treats the reader as an intelligent and capable person. It does not try to teach you basic things like how to use a Bezier pen the way some other material we purchased has done. There is so much in this book that as diligent as we have been by working on it every day, there is still so much we have not done yet. I think this book will take us 6 months to carefully make our way through. Mr. Evans has included literally hundreds of tutorial projects on the disk, I have never seen a book like this before. This is why I say it is like a graduate class in animation. The other two things that I feel should be mentioned is the sheer number of topics that were covered in this tome, and how many of them are techniques I have never seen anywhere else. And I have a at least 40 other 3d books on my shelf. I could go on and on. The book even has a trailer online.I can't recommend this book enough. My company bought a book for our 3d graphics department, but each of the 5 people in it has since gone out and bought their own copy. Even though 2 of the people use other programs.I was impressed with the advanced subjects, especially those in the deformation and morphing chapters. There are more tutorials than any other 3d book I have read, and the multi-pass tutorial was especially thorough. The section on the modeler application had tons of tips and works the reader through many different types of projects. The “electric image” of the external environment is determined by the conductive properties of surrounding objects. The electric field emanates from the electric organ in the tail region (gray rectangle) and is sensed by the electroreceptive skin areas, using two electric “foveas” to actively search and inspect objects. Shown are the field distortions created by two different types of objects: a plant that conducts better than water, above (green) and a non-conducting stone, below (gray). (Redrawn from Heiligenberg, 1977). These studies have led to important insights into problems of scene analysis, but not all of these insights are widely appreciated, and there remain critical shortcomings in current approaches that hinder further progress. O'Connell Neuroscience has a long, rich history in embracing unusual animals for research. Over the past several decades, there has been a technology-driven bottleneck in the species used for neuroscience research. However, an oncoming wave of technologies applicable to many animals hold promise for enabling researchers to address challenging scientific ques. Amongst them, accurate understanding of traffic signs by using computer vision and deep learning methods has great significance for driving safety. In recent years, the advent of deep learning has made this issue much effectively. In this article, our major goal is to use deep learning models for conducting traffic-light sign recognition related to autonomous vehicles. As far as we know, this is the first time that the capsule neural network is employed as a method for scene understanding so as to effectively identify a class of traffic-light signs. Compared with the well-known convolutional neural networks, capsule networks diminish the demands for training datasets and tackle the spatial relationship much precisely. View. Hunting predators must find, pursue, and catch often fast-moving prey among myriad distracting sensory cues. Solving this sensorymotor challenge requires rapid changes in sensory attention and in motor outputs in response to both prey and environment (1). Insectivorous bats rely on echolocation to orient and catch prey on the wing under conditions of poor lighting (2), and their call patterns reveal the dynamic sensory strategies adopted to hunt successfully.. Hunting bats adjust their echolocation to receive weak prey echoes for clutter reduction Article Full-text available Mar 2021 Laura Stidsholt Stefan Greif Holger R Goerlitz Kristian Beedholm Peter Teglberg Madsen How animals extract information from their surroundings to guide motor patterns is central to their survival. Here, we use echo-recording tags to show how wild hunting bats adjust their sensory strategies to their prey and natural environment. When searching, bats maximize the chances of detecting small prey by using large sensory volumes. During prey pursuit, they trade spatial for temporal information by reducing sensory volumes while increasing update rate and redundancy of their sensory scenes. These adjustments lead to very weak prey echoes that bats protect from interference by segregating prey sensory streams from the background using a combination of fast-acting sensory and motor strategies. If this were really the case, however, it is hard to see how vision could ever get off the ground. James Gibson’s signal contribution was his hypothesis that for every perceivable property of the environment, however subtle, there must be a higher order variable of information, however complex, that specifies it—if only we are clever enough to find them. Such variables are informative about behaviorally relevant properties within the physical and ecological constraints of a species’ niche. Sensory ecology is replete with instructive examples, including weakly electric fish, the narwal’s tusk, and insect flight control. In particular, I elaborate the case of passing through gaps. Optic flow is sufficient to control locomotion around obstacles and through openings. The affordances of the environment, such as gap passability, are specified by action-scaled information. This is a good strategy not only due to physiological constraints imposed by the organisms' evolutionary history but also due to the physics of the natural world.. Using virtual worlds to understand insect navigation for bio-inspired systems Article Full-text available Sep 2020 Pavan Kumar Kaushik Shannon B Olsson Insects perform a wide array of intricate behaviors over large spatial and temporal scales in complex natural environments. A mechanistic understanding of insect cognition has direct implications on how brains integrate multimodal information and can inspire bio-based solutions for autonomous robots. Virtual Reality (VR) offers an opportunity assess insect neuroethology while presenting complex, yet controlled, stimuli. Here, we discuss the use of insects as inspiration for artificial systems, recent advances in different VR technologies, current knowledge gaps, and the potential for application of insect VR research to bio-inspired robots. Finally, we advocate the need to diversify our model organisms, behavioral paradigms and embrace the complexity of the natural world. This will help in uncovering the proximate and ultimate basis of brain and behavior and extract general principles for common challenging problems. View. However, these arenas cannot be used to assess long-range search behavior, nor have they been applied to ecological questions to date (10,(23)(24)(25)(26). For example, vertical bars, a commonly used 2D stimulus in most VRs, cannot be utilized to assess depth cues such as perspective and motion parallax (11,23,(27)(28) (29) (30)(31). Existing arenas also lack the capability to simultaneously present dynamic visual scenery containing 3D objects in the presence of airflow fields and odor flux (10,(23)(24)(25)(26) at large scales critical for the multimodal search behavior exhibited by flying insects in nature (3,8,18,32)... We note that our experiment here tested a maximum of two objects and a single directed airflow and odor flux. In natural contexts, search behavior generally involves missing or occluded cues, clutter, and ambiguous and confounding stimuli (5,(27)(28) (29) (30)43). Our experiments here nevertheless demonstrate prerequisites for search behavior including figure-ground discrimination, discrimination of objects in the foreground amidst a complex background, and navigation to targets while accounting for orientation, self-motion, slip, wind, and odor cues.. Characterizing long-range search behavior in Diptera using complex 3D virtual environments Article Full-text available May 2020 P NATL ACAD SCI USA Pavan Kumar Kaushik Marian Renz Shannon B. Olsson The exemplary search capabilities of flying insects have established them as one of the most diverse taxa on Earth. However, we still lack the fundamental ability to quantify, represent, and predict trajectories under natural contexts to understand search and its applications. For example, flying insects have evolved in complex multimodal three-dimensional (3D) environments, but we do not yet understand which features of the natural world are used to locate distant objects. Here, we independently and dynamically manipulate 3D objects, airflow fields, and odor plumes in virtual reality over large spatial and temporal scales. We demonstrate that flies make use of features such as foreground segmentation, perspective, motion parallax, and integration of multiple modalities to navigate to objects in a complex 3D landscape while in flight. We first show that tethered flying insects of multiple species navigate to virtual 3D objects. Using the apple fly Rhagoletis pomonella, we then measure their reactive distance to objects and show that these flies use perspective and local parallax cues to distinguish and navigate to virtual objects of different sizes and distances. We also show that apple flies can orient in the absence of optic flow by using only directional airflow cues, and require simultaneous odor and directional airflow input for plume following to a host volatile blend. As a consequence, some attacks are perceptible by humans, as displayed in Fig. 1.. Adversarial Attacks Hidden in Plain Sight Chapter Full-text available Apr 2020 Jan Philip Gopfert Andre Artelt Heiko Wersing Barbara Hammer Convolutional neural networks have been used to achieve a string of successes during recent years, but their lack of interpretability remains a serious issue. Adversarial examples are designed to deliberately fool neural networks into making any desired incorrect classification, potentially with very high certainty. Several defensive approaches increase robustness against adversarial attacks, demanding attacks of greater magnitude, which lead to visible artifacts. By considering human visual perception, we compose a technique that allows to hide such adversarial attacks in regions of high complexity, such that they are imperceptible even to an astute observer. We carry out a user study on classifying adversarially modified images to validate the perceptual quality of our approach and find significant evidence for its concealment with regards to human visual perception. View. Acoustic information that the bat obtains from its surroundings comes not only from selfgenerated echo returns, but also from echolocation and social communication sounds produced by neighboring conspecifics. As such, the mix of echolocation and social communication sounds creates a cocktail party-like environment (Cherry, 1953; Lewicki et al., 2014), in which bats operate. Most bat communication and echolocation calls contain overlapping acoustic features.. Neural Response Selectivity to Natural Sounds in the Bat Midbrain Article Jan 2020 NEUROSCIENCE Angeles Salles Sangwook Park Harshavardhan Sundar Silvio Macias Cynthia F. Moss Little is known about the neural mechanisms that mediate differential action-selection responses to communication and echolocation calls in bats. For example, in the big brown bat, FM food-claiming communication calls closely resemble FM echolocation calls, which guide social and orienting behaviors, respectively. Using advanced signal processing methods, we identified fine differences in temporal structure of these natural sounds that appear key to auditory discrimination and behavioral decisions. We recorded extracellular potentials from single neurons in the midbrain inferior colliculus of passively listening animals, and compared responses to playbacks of acoustic signals used by bats for social communication and echolocation. We combined information obtained from spike number and spike triggered averages to reveal a robust classification of neuron selectivity for communication or echolocation calls. Conversely, the functional requirements of sensory systems are shaped by the physical properties of the outside world: only if the neural sensitivity matches the current statistics of the sensory inputs will the coding of relevant stimulus features be both informative and energetically efficient and consequently evolutionarily viable.. Cooperative population coding facilitates efficient sound-source separability by adaptation to input statistics Article Full-text available Jul 2019 Helge Gleiss Jorg Encke Andrea Lingner Todd R. Jennings Michael Pecka Our sensory environment changes constantly. Accordingly, neural systems continually adapt to the concurrent stimulus statistics to remain sensitive over a wide range of conditions. Such dynamic range adaptation (DRA) is assumed to increase both the effectiveness of the neuronal code and perceptual sensitivity. However, direct demonstrations of DRA-based efficient neuronal processing that also produces perceptual benefits are lacking. Here, we investigated the impact of DRA on spatial coding in the rodent brain and the perception of human listeners. Complex spatial stimulation with dynamically changing source locations elicited prominent DRA already on the initial spatial processing stage, the Lateral Superior Olive (LSO) of gerbils. Surprisingly, on the level of individual neurons, DRA diminished spatial tuning because of large response variability across trials.
