It is excellently written - clear, concise, and well organized. The advice is solid and thorough. I highly recommend this book to any piano teacher looking for new, creative ways to address the issues your students may have in any aspect of their playing. To be clear, this book addresses issues in music reading, artistry, and technique. What you will not find in it is advice on how to make your students practice more regularly. It does give specifics on what to tell them to practice to improve their 'ailments.' However, if you're looking for more information on how to just get them to practice in the first place, try reading Cantan's blog.This book makes me a better piano teacher. This book is a wonderful reference for any teacher, parent or older piano student. In my 12 years teaching piano, I have seen students come up against many pernicious practice maladies, the most common of which are covered in this book. Some of these can have a lasting impact on a student’s playing and cause more serious problems down the line. That is why you must be their practice physician. If you tell them how to practice at home but fail to implement the strategies in the lesson, then you may be helping them to waste their time. Very few students will follow your instructions once they get home, and there are two main reasons for this. The first is that verbal or written instructions are not vivid enough, and following these instructions will feel harder than practicing the old way or not practicing at all. The key ingredient in these cures for piano practice ailments is that they make use of your student’s imagination.
