The image quality of the binoculars isn?t a problem, as they employ clear optics that allow for sharp focusing at the fixed 10x zoom level. Build quality also is good, with thick rubber coating on the sides to ensure a good grip and fold-down rubber eyecups to accommodate eyeglass wearers. The small 25mm objective lenses, however, don?t provide substantial light-gathering but do keep the design as small and light as possible The built-in camera will be the real problem for most users. It uses a low-resolution CCD that snaps pictures at a fixed resolution of 640 x 480, which is fine for e-mail but not adequate for making prints. To make matters worse, most of the shots we took were grainy, with lots of compression artifacts and subpar color. If you can live with those limitations, the camera does have the benefits of ease of use and plenty of image-storaging capacity. With 8 MB of built-in memory, we snapped nearly 150 pictures before connecting the camera to a PC. No image preview is available, but a basic black-and-white LCD display on top of the camera tells you how many pictures you?ve snapped and the selected mode. With a better digital camera and removable memory slots, this idea of a high-quality camera-binocular hybrid could realize its full potential. There are basically no instructions on which piece of software included is the one you need to load. Having Windows XP I just tried to load the driver. This did not allow me to access the built in memory, however, as you can with most devices. So I loaded up the other 2 SW modules and went about trying to find the bushnell's pictures. Again, there are zero instructions on actually using the software to offload pictures from the binoculars. Even once you learn how it is easy to see that the software seems like it's from the 80's, and would be more at home in windows 3.11. Not to mention that when you get to preview the thumbnails the dang camera is streaming video into the software while you try to copy them over to your computer. I can't imagine a situation where you would need to stream binocular-image video while tethered to a computer via a USB cable. Oh, and all the pics are stored as BMP files. I mean, who uses BMP files for Pete's sake. Every digital camera I know of saves JPG or TIF images. It was daylight when I took this first set of pics, but all the pictures that I took came out very fuzzy. Even though I could see the plants clear as day, these pictures too came out too fuzzy to recognize anything. Ok, so I just figured I needed to adjust the focus a little because the camera was more sensitive than my eyes in terms of focus. In general, just get used to using the thing. No harm, no foul. I took it to a concert that night and took all 134 pictures I could on the higher quality setting. The 3-in-a-row picture feature was nice, and because you can be a little shaky pressing the button, it makes you feel like at least 2 out of 3 will be fairly stable pictures. I couldn't wait to get home and review the pictures. It's as if I tried to use the thing in outer space or something. I was completely horrified that none of the pictures from that once in a lifetime event were anywhere near worth saving. What a bummer! So, in summation, the binoculars are decent and compact. And they produce a nice image when looking into them. But don't even think of trying to take a picture. And again, I cannot iterate enough how out-dated the software is. After all, if you knew you couldn't take a picture with them, you would just purchase binoculars right. After reading the horrible reviews, I debated opening the box when it arrived. What I found best for all software which comes in the box, never open the CD. If you have any other OS, other than Win98, then just plug it in to a USB port and the camera memory will appear as a disk drive. You do NOT need and do not want the software which comes in the box. This is true for any digital camera. As binoculars go, this pair isn't bad. It's small, rubberized, has a focus and rubber eye cups. Chromatic distortion is slight, good sharpness and detail, although there is some fogginess around the outside of the field of view. The built-in camera is a toy by all accounts. Bird watching? I think not. My suggested use is to collect evidence of the neighbor's dog going through your garbage or of a suspicious car parked across the street. Ronald Tee 3.0 out of 5 stars Out of curiosity, I checked it out and was surprised at the magnification and halfway decent sharpness of the binoculars--although contrast was on the low side. It's very easy to do. All is needed is a small phillips screwdriver to remove 4 micro screws and a little dexterity to pry the two plastic halves from the binoculars. I was first skeptical when the instructions mentioned that the camera is infinite focus fixed beyond 49 yards. Therefore, you are not shooting exactly what you are viewing since you can go up to 10x with the lenses. In any case this is irrelevant because after taking some test shots I tried connecting to my PC. I've done troubleshooting for a lot of devices in my day, I know what I'm doing, and I like the relative ease of the USB standard. No such luck with this. The included driver didn't work, the updated driver from bushnell's website didn't work (btw, I'm using XP). I always got an 'unable to connect to device' error. After an hour of trying all the tricks to get it to work I decided to return it. I would strongly advise ignoring the digital camera aspect of this pair of binoculars and either get regular binoculars or a better pair that doesn't require additional drivers in XP to dump images. Soper 1.0 out of 5 stars Whenever you re-focus you also have to re-adjust the individual-eyepiece focus too. Eye-relief is not good enough to use the binoculars while wearing spectacles, but the focussing does have enough range to use them without wearing glasses, even for someone as short-sighted as me. The camera is useless. It is fixed-focus, which is OK for a simple, low-resolution camera like this. But when the designers put this camera into this housing, with a longer focal-length lens that compact camera usually have, they forgot the infra-red blocking filter. As a result, the picturs come out looking rather odd: foliage appears grey and other colours are muted. And even aside from this, the image quality is not great. It also appears to consume batteries, even when switched off. Reviews on other sites criticise the software that comes with the camera. I have not had any problems with it; possibly other reviewers have not realisd that unlike most cameras this one uses a TWAIN interface to transfer pictures to the PC - that is, the PC will see it as a scanner rather than a removable hard-drive. You do have to manually re-name the images you want to transfer, though. The camera is always in Focus from 66 feet to infinity. If you take pictures of objects closer than 66 feet they may appear fuzzy or blurry. When looking through the binoculars you will need to focus them for your eyes, but the camera will always be in focus. What is the Flashback Feature. A: The FlashBack feature records a movie for a user-selected period of time (5, 10, 15 or 20 seconds). You can record for as long as you like, but you will only save a recording for the period of time you have selected. For example, if you chose 10 seconds, only the last ten seconds of the recording will remain in memory and be saved--the rest of the recording is discarded. An example of using the FlashBack feature would be to record a baseball pitcher throwing a pitch. Select 10 seconds from the FlashBack Period submenu. Press the shutter button to begin recording while the pitcher prepares. After the pitcher throws the ball, click on the shutter button again to turn off recording. Still I fell in love with the concept of a marriage between the digital camera and the Binocular. I felt that I was taking a real chance here on buying this product, but I figured that with 2MP (Which.by the way there is a setting for 3MP) it had to be better hten the first CaptureView. I was right (Thank God!) This Digital Binocular really works and with acceptable quality. I also have a Coolpix 4500, so I figured I would compare how the coolpix 4500 at full digital zoom and the Meade binoculars compared. I focused on a subject of a construction site far on the horizon (Must be a few miles away). As far as Magnification, both the CoolPix 4500 and the Binoculars are about tied. ( So maybe a camera is more versitile in most cases.) But the coolpix pictures at full digital zoom could not stand up to the clarity of the Binoculars picture. The Binoculars arrived with some smudges on the plastic body casing (Looks like grease, which I had to clean off), There was also a minor scratch on the plastic, but still not worth sending back and complaining since this is not a gift and all I care about is functionality. The body is kind of cheap in appearance but this one has a lot more functionality than the other binocular combos I have seen.I am satisfied with this product, although I believe that the Digital Binocular is still in its young days, and will improve greatly in the next few years. I think ypur option to buy this product depends on what you wish to do with it.For taking pictures of objects within a 300ft range, stick with your camera. To get fair to good quality shots at a great distance, this is the ticket. I have not tried making a 90 second AVI movie yet.I'll do that when the weather clears, but I have tried shooting in low light. Since there is no shuttle control, you will not be able to do any astrophotography with this unit ( a bright moon appears washed out.) but it can do low light situations. I could not hold it steady enough to do Mars, although it did show up looking quiet like a bright star in the pic ( Just with a trail since my hand is unsteady.) HINT: The next version needs a tripod mounting screw. I also feel that the casing could be stronger and a camera is more versitle (Third-party vendors make a zoom lens for the coolpix.I could have gone for that.but I love new technologies so I gave this a try.) I give this Capture View Binoculars four stars because it meets my expectations of what it should be able to do. Get your own instant replay of every play. We added a 256MB SD card and were able to record, replay and save every interesting play in the game, great play or lousy call, I got them all. Very easy to use, high quality product. I was concerned that the unit might not work with my Windows 98 based system, but the included software had a DirectX upgrade that I installed that made my system compatible. The box said Windows 98SE or better was needed but my original Windows 98, not SE, works perfectly. Apparently, newer versions of Windows support the binoculars with no upgrades needed. Excellent still pictures too, but I love the instant replay capability. This new Meade digital binocular is the best digital binocular on the market. It's made of plastic; you wouldn't want to drop it. The flip-up LCD screen appears vulnerable on its lightweight hinged base. This base rubs on an internal cable, which may wear, causing future problems. The battery cover fits so loosely I have to hold it in place with a rubber band or the camera turns off. The good news: Most of the plastic (except the battery cover) is heavy duty. The LCD screen can be left down most of the time so it's out of harm's way. You can't see it in bright light anyway and it's only needed for the initial setup and to view pictures. Power is readily maintained with the application of a rubber band to hold the battery cover in place. The binoculars are great. The 2MP images are excellent to my non-professional eye and accurately duplicate the view seen through the binoculars. Resolution is even sufficient for further magnification with photo software. The menu and controls are user friendly. One of the best features is the internal flash menory, which retains images even if the batteries fail, and the SD slot for expandability. Plug n' play means no potentially faulty external drivers. The device is recognized as a hard drive and images can be opened in any photo app. I'm satisfied. It's a keeper! The camera part can use some work, but for a product in its infancy, its kind of fun. I am still testing the camera part, but I do believe the price is a little high. The casing is plastic, but it appears to be pretty sturdy. Overall, for a little fun and something new it is okay.I am sure once I use them more the quality will improve. I was disappointed when I realized that what you see in the binocular is NOT what the picture will be. To frame the picture you must use the LCD screen, which is impossible to see in sunlight. I suggest getting either a good digital camera with high zoom or good binoculars not a combination, until this tecnology improves.
