Find the boiler serial number, usually at upper right corner of the data tag where the manufacturing date is given in parehtheses: Burnham's online repair parts book is a large 130 page PDF document.Part No 8010601. Current product list (2018): Alpine condensing gas boilers, Aspen, K2, K2 Combi, X-C, Sage zone control, ES2, ESC, Series 2, Series 3, Series X2, Independence gas steam boiler, MPO-IQ, MegaSteam, V8H, Alliance SL domestic hot water heater, Radiant cast iron radiators, Slenderized radiators, Baseray cast iron baseboard, Classic water or steam radiators. In general, just to get our terminology right, usually we call hot water heating equipment a boiler and we reserve the name furnace for warm air heating systems. I know there was an exception but that's generally the case. For the second example, after the 35 (probably model number) the next two digits 04 are month and the nect two digits 89 the year of manufacture of the unit. In the third example we're stuck again - when you've found the serial number, I'd give the company a call, give model and serial number, and just ask them. Let us know what you learn as it will assist other readers. You'll want to look at the product serial number not just model number. The company produces boilers that run on gas, electric and oil fuel power for home heating needs. When Burnham boilers do not function properly, issues can arise that affect the integrity of the boiler and the heating system in general. This can cause extensive damage to not only the boiler, but the piping system, possibly causing water damage. This could cost thousands of dollars to repair along with the price and hassle of cleanup. This sometimes gets stuck and a good slap on the side will lower it. If it was stuck and you're able to shake it loose, you will hear the feed pump motor kick on and the water level gauge will begin to rise. If not, check the power to the boiler at the electrical panel and make sure the gas line is on. Set the cover to the side. The boiler heat exchanger should be heating up and the flames in the manifold should be burning. If they are, return your thermostat to the desired temperature and re-install the cover. Ensure the wires are connected properly by lightly tugging on them. If they are not connected, tighten the fastening screws on the wire connections for the thermostatic control board with a screwdriver. The water level in the gauge will determine the level of water in the boiler. If the water is too low, the automatic shutoff will trip and the boiler will not turn on, even when the thermostat calls for heat. Consult your Burnham steam boiler manual for the trip level. If you do not have a manual, check the sight glass. Press the pressure relief valve on the top of the boiler to allow water to come back into the boiler. Excess pressure can restrict water coming back to the boiler for reheating. If the boiler water level rises, it should restart. Go to the steam boiler and check if the supply pipes to the radiating system are warm. If they are, go to the room or rooms and open the pressure valves on the radiators with an Allen wrench. These are located on the side of the radiator where the supply plumbing pipes in. This should release any back pressure and allow the steam to push through the radiator, making it warm. The radiator should be warm within 1 to 3 minutes. Turn it to ensure it is on. If it was not on, it should start to heat up in 1 to 3 minutes. There may not be enough pressure for the steam to get all the way to the radiator and is bypassing it, turning to water too quickly. Locate the pressuretrol next to the water level gauge. You will see a set screw on the back of the pressuretrol. This will adjust the pressure of the boiler. Turn the screw a half-turn clockwise with your screwdriver to add pressure and turn on the system. If there is water sitting in the radiator, the air vent should hiss as the temperature and pressure from the steam races through the radiator. A booster coil is an electric device that heats the pipe because the system is not strong enough to keep the heat and pressure hot enough for a steam process. Turn the temperature to its maximum setting with a wrench to test the coil. You should be able to feel the heat radiating from it. If the booster coil is not hot, it needs to be replaced for this portion of the system to operate properly. He works in the construction industry as a builder and as an energy efficiency consultant. Show Comments. There are two types of boiler pilot lights. One is a manual type that you must light, and the other is an automatic pilot ignition type that lights itself. Before lighting any boiler, you must know which type you have; there are two ways to determine this. An automatic ignition type will have a safety label on the front of the boiler that tells you that it is an automatic ignition system. If there is no label, look at the top of the gas control knob. If the control knob has two settings, on and off, it is an automatic ignition system. A manual ignition will have three settings -- on, off and pilot. Never attempt to light an automatic ignition system manually. The gas control knob box will be gray and situated near the floor at the front of the boiler. The knob will be situated on top. If you smell any gas, allow the smell to dissipate for 15 minutes. Open windows to facilitate venting. Remove the access panel to gain access to the pilot light. In most cases, this panel is located adjacent to the gas control knob box. It may be attached with finger screws that are turned out, or it may be held on with gravity clips so that the panel can be lifted off. Peer into the access hole and look for the pilot light orifice; use a flashlight to make a positive identification. The pilot light orifice will look much like an upturned piece of metal tubing -- the pilot light burns at the tip of this tubing. Pressing down on the knob will release gas into the pilot light orifice. Insert a lit fireplace match or a butane candle lighter into the access hole and light the pilot light. Keep holding down the control knob button as you do this.aidsaccess.com/ckupload/files/Drew-Lecher-Violin-Technique-The-Manual.pdf When the flame from the match or candle lighter reaches the pilot light, a blue flame will suddenly appear. When you see the blue flame, remove the match or the candle lighter. The blue flame will remain lit. Keep the pilot light button pressed down for another 30 to 45 seconds. This action will open up the thermocoupling at the end of the pilot light orifice tube that is inside of the gas control knob box. Release the button after the designated time and the pilot light should remain burning. If it goes out, repeat the lighting procedure, but hold down the pilot light button for a full minute. If the pilot light still goes out after this time, the thermocouple must be replaced. Automatic Boiler Pilot Light Ignition Turn off the electrical switch that controls the boiler. Remove the access panel either by turning finger screws or lifting it up and pulling it away, if it is held on by gravity clips. If you smell gas, allow the gas smell to dissipate for at least 15 minutes. This is the automatic starter that will light the pilot. If the clicking noise does not abate after 30 seconds, or the clicking noise stops but there still is no pilot light, there is a problem and a service technician must be called. Things You Will Need Flashlight Fireplace match or candle lighter Warning If you still smell gas after venting the area where the boiler resides, turn off the gas and call in a service technician. Do not attempt to light the pilot light until the problem is resolved. Water boilers include Taco circulators and HydroStat reset controls with low water cut-off. Steam boilers include Honeywell operating controls and probe type low water cut-offs. A deluxe, insulated enameled steel jacket on all boilers reduces heat loss. The cast iron sections are assembled with steel push nipples and factory tested to assure a water tight seal. Always contact a professional for installation, maintenance and service. Consult Peerless for details. Always usepropersafety clothing, respirators andequipmentwhen servicing or working nearby the boiler. Never burn garbage or paper in this boiler. Do not convert to any solid fuel (i.e. wood, coal). Do not convert to any gaseous fuel (i.e. natural gas, LP). All flammable debris, rags, paper, wood scraps, etc., should be kept clear of the boiler at all times. Do not unscrew any pipe fittings nor attempt to disconnect any components of this boiler without positively assuring the water is cool and has no pressure. Always wear protective clothing and equipment when installing, starting up or servicing this boiler to prevent scald injuries. Do not rely on the pressure and temperature gauges to determine the temperature and pressure of the boiler. This boiler contains components which become very hot when the boiler is operating. Do not touch any components unless they are cool. Serious property damage could result if the boiler is connected to an approved vent system. Clean and unobstructed venting and air intake systems are necessary to allow noxious fumes that could cause injury or loss of life to vent safely and will contribute toward maintaining the boiler’s efficiency. If damage due to frozen pipes is a possibility, the heating system should not be left unattended in cold weather; or appropriate safeguards and alarms should be installed on the heating system to prevent damage if the boiler is inoperative. Size each opening per following: Duct cross-sectional area shall be same as opening free area. Duct cross-sectional area shall be same as opening free area. Use indoor air if two permanent openings communicate directly with additional space(s) of sufficient volume such that combined volume of all spaces meet criteria for unconfined space. Size each opening for minimum free area of 1 square inch per 1,000 BTU per hour input of all equipment in spaces, but not less than 100 square inches. Louvers will prevent the entrance of rain and snow. If the free area of the louver or grille is not known, assume wood louvers have 20-25 percent free area and metal louvers and grilles have 60-75 percent free area. Refer to Figure 3. Tilt the boiler back, allowing an edge to rest on the floor, and remove the skid. Heat exchanger, canopy, and base are preassembled. Plug remainder of tappings. Carefully lift and reposition. Gaskets must also be between canopy and heat exchanger. Using rubber gasket and bolts provided secure heater coil or blank plate to boiler extension Refer to Figure 4. Starting from the front, wrap the jacket around the boiler. Make sure that return pipe, observation port and shell extension fit proper into there corresponding clearance holes. Continue bending jacket around until front panels meet. Make sure that the jacket is at least ?” to ?” off of the floor before attaching. Wire the control according to Figure 13 or 14, in the Electrical and Sequence of Operation Section. Refer to Figure 5. Burnham’s Standard Warranty does not cover problems caused by oxygen contamination of boiler water or scale (lime) build-up caused by frequent addition of water. This can be accomplished by taking the following measures: When sizing the system circulator, the pressure drop of all radiators, baseboard and radiant tubing and all connecting piping must be considered. Set the bypass and return valves to a half throttle position to start. Operate boiler until the system water temperature reaches its normal operating range. Adjust both valves simultaneously. Closing the boiler return valve while opening the bypass valve will raise the boiler return temperature. Opening the boiler return valve while closing the by-pass valve will lower the boiler return temperature. See Figures 8 and 9. Safety Relief Valve must be installed with spindle in the vertical position. Installation of the relief valve Do not pipe in any area where freezing could occur. Do not install any shut-off valves, plugs or caps. See Figures 8 and 9. A qualified water treatment chemical specialist should be consulted for recommendations regarding appropriate chemical compounds and concentrations which are compatible with local environmental regulations. Adjust and maintain the mixing valve in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Do not operate tankless heater without mixing valve. The flow regulator should preferably be located below the inlet to the heater and a minimum of 3’ away from the inlet so that the regulator is not subjected to excess temperatures that may occur during “off” periods when it is possible for heat The flow regulator also limits the flow of supply water regardless of inlet pressure variations in the range of 20 to 125 psi. This prevents the possibility In addition, savings of hot water will be achieved since the user will not waste as much hot water while seeking a water temperature. Higher temperature hot water required by dishwashers and automatic washers is possible by piping the hot water from the heater prior to entering the mixing valve. The mixing valve should be “trapped” by installing it below the cold water inlet to heater to prevent lime formation in the valve. Refer to Figure 10. Consequently, the heater should be periodically backwashed. This is accomplished by installing hose bibs as illustrated and allowing water at city pressure to run into hose bib A, through the heater, and out hose bib B until the discharge is clear. The tees in which the hose bibs are located should be the same size as heater connections to minimize pressure drop. This is applicable to some city water and particularly to well water. An appropriate water softener should be installed based on the analysis and dealer’s recommendation. This is not only beneficial to the tankless heater but to piping and fixtures plus the many other benefits derived from soft water.
