In general, just to get our terminology right, usually we call hot water heating equipment a boiler and we reserve the name furnace for warm air heating systems. One is a manual type that you must light, and the other is an automatic pilot ignition type that lights itself. Before lighting any boiler, you must know which type you have; there are two ways to determine this. An automatic ignition type will have a safety label on the front of the boiler that tells you that it is an automatic ignition system. If there is no label, look at the top of the gas control knob. If the control knob has two settings, on and off, it is an automatic ignition system. A manual ignition will have three settings -- on, off and pilot. Never attempt to light an automatic ignition system manually. The gas control knob box will be gray and situated near the floor at the front of the boiler. The knob will be situated on top. If you smell any gas, allow the smell to dissipate for 15 minutes.http://inter-buss.com/images/canon-powershot-s5-is-service-manual.pdf Open windows to facilitate venting. Remove the access panel to gain access to the pilot light. In most cases, this panel is located adjacent to the gas control knob box. It may be attached with finger screws that are turned out, or it may be held on with gravity clips so that the panel can be lifted off. Peer into the access hole and look for the pilot light orifice; use a flashlight to make a positive identification. The pilot light orifice will look much like an upturned piece of metal tubing -- the pilot light burns at the tip of this tubing. Pressing down on the knob will release gas into the pilot light orifice. Insert a lit fireplace match or a butane candle lighter into the access hole and light the pilot light. Keep holding down the control knob button as you do this. When the flame from the match or candle lighter reaches the pilot light, a blue flame will suddenly appear. When you see the blue flame, remove the match or the candle lighter. The blue flame will remain lit. Keep the pilot light button pressed down for another 30 to 45 seconds. This action will open up the thermocoupling at the end of the pilot light orifice tube that is inside of the gas control knob box. Release the button after the designated time and the pilot light should remain burning. If it goes out, repeat the lighting procedure, but hold down the pilot light button for a full minute. If the pilot light still goes out after this time, the thermocouple must be replaced. Automatic Boiler Pilot Light Ignition Turn off the electrical switch that controls the boiler. Remove the access panel either by turning finger screws or lifting it up and pulling it away, if it is held on by gravity clips. If you smell gas, allow the gas smell to dissipate for at least 15 minutes. Open windows to facilitate venting. This is the automatic starter that will light the pilot. If the clicking noise does not abate after 30 seconds, or the clicking noise stops but there still is no pilot light, there is a problem and a service technician must be called. The company produces boilers that run on gas, electric and oil fuel power for home heating needs. When Burnham boilers do not function properly, issues can arise that affect the integrity of the boiler and the heating system in general. This can cause extensive damage to not only the boiler, but the piping system, possibly causing water damage. This could cost thousands of dollars to repair along with the price and hassle of cleanup. This sometimes gets stuck and a good slap on the side will lower it. If it was stuck and you're able to shake it loose, you will hear the feed pump motor kick on and the water level gauge will begin to rise. If not, check the power to the boiler at the electrical panel and make sure the gas line is on. Set the cover to the side. The boiler heat exchanger should be heating up and the flames in the manifold should be burning. If they are, return your thermostat to the desired temperature and re-install the cover. Ensure the wires are connected properly by lightly tugging on them. If they are not connected, tighten the fastening screws on the wire connections for the thermostatic control board with a screwdriver. The water level in the gauge will determine the level of water in the boiler.If the water is too low, the automatic shutoff will trip and the boiler will not turn on, even when the thermostat calls for heat. Consult your Burnham steam boiler manual for the trip level. If you do not have a manual, check the sight glass. Press the pressure relief valve on the top of the boiler to allow water to come back into the boiler. Excess pressure can restrict water coming back to the boiler for reheating. If the boiler water level rises, it should restart. Go to the steam boiler and check if the supply pipes to the radiating system are warm. If they are, go to the room or rooms and open the pressure valves on the radiators with an Allen wrench. These are located on the side of the radiator where the supply plumbing pipes in. This should release any back pressure and allow the steam to push through the radiator, making it warm. The radiator should be warm within 1 to 3 minutes. Turn it to ensure it is on. If it was not on, it should start to heat up in 1 to 3 minutes. There may not be enough pressure for the steam to get all the way to the radiator and is bypassing it, turning to water too quickly. Locate the pressuretrol next to the water level gauge. You will see a set screw on the back of the pressuretrol. This will adjust the pressure of the boiler. Turn the screw a half-turn clockwise with your screwdriver to add pressure and turn on the system. If there is water sitting in the radiator, the air vent should hiss as the temperature and pressure from the steam races through the radiator. A booster coil is an electric device that heats the pipe because the system is not strong enough to keep the heat and pressure hot enough for a steam process. Turn the temperature to its maximum setting with a wrench to test the coil. You should be able to feel the heat radiating from it. Thermostat malfunctioning: Check that thermostat is in heat mode and has an appropriate temperature setting. Try moving the thermostat setting for the temperature up or down a few degrees. If this does not work, troubleshoot the thermostat. If the water pressure is low (below 12 psi), the system needs to have water added. The boiler's automatic filling system controlled by the pressure-reducing valve should maintain the proper water level at 12 to 15 psi. If there is no pressure-reducing valve, you can manually feed the boiler by opening up the water feed valve until boiler pressure reaches 12 psi. Mineral deposits accumulating in boiler and heat exchanger: This is the likely cause if the change has been gradual. Flush the boiler or call a boiler pro. The expansion tank has too much or too little water. The tank must be properly charged with air to prevent boiling (see below). In older boiler systems, the steel expansion tank may be found in the attic or suspended between joists in the basement. In newer systems, the diaphragm expansion tank may be attached to the boiler piping near the boiler. The expansion tank must be properly charged with air to prevent water in the system from boiling and exceeding the desired 12 psi of pressure. The expansion tank provides a cushion of air to accommodate expansion and contraction of water in the system, and without the cushion, the water may stop circulating and begin to boil. To check this, turn the boiler off and let it cool. Lift the manual pressure relief lever and discharge some water for 3 seconds, then allow it to snap back into the closed position. The water should discharge strongly and be relatively clean. If the valve leaks slightly afterward, this could be due to sediment trapped in the seat. Open the valve again and discharge a second time. Faulty pressure-relief valve: If no water at all discharges from the valve, or if the valve will not close at all, shut off the boiler water feed valve and replace the pressure-relief valve. Leaking water pipe connection: If water is leaking or dripping from a pipe, follow the leak back to its source and repair the connection where the leak is originating. This requires turning off the water supply to the house and draining the boiler system. When water squirts from the radiator, close the valve. Faulty zone valve: Check zone valve for proper operation. Water pipe should be hot up to and beyond the zone valve. If the valve is faulty or stuck, lines will be hot up to the valve but will cool off slightly beyond the valve. Have a faulty valve replaced by a pro. Faulty circulator: Check circulator for proper operation (make sure motor runs). There may be dedicated circulators for different heating zones in the home. Have the circulator replaced if it is faulty. There is a spring-loaded coupling that connects the pump to the motor; when it breaks after the pump jams, the coupling will make a loud noise as the motor runs. A bad circulator pump will need to be replaced by a technician. Water trapped in return lines: Check to make sure the pitch of the return lines slopes back toward the boiler. Adjust pitch with new pipe hangers, if necessary. You may also need to adjust the pitch of the radiator with a shim so that it slopes back toward the return pipe. Before you spend a day freezing, you can try bleeding the furnace yourself. If you have a gas furnace, or you aren’t sure what kind of furnace you have, don’t try to bleed the furnace yourself. If at any point during the process you become unsure of what’s happening, stop, turn off the furnace, and call a professional. It can be dangerous to work on a furnace by yourself. Bleeding the furnace shouldn’t put you in any danger, but it’s better to focus on your safety than to start a project you’re not sure about just because you want the furnace working again. People who are experienced with such do-it-yourself projects will probably be able to bleed the furnace without too much of an issue. People who rarely do this kind of work around the house should let a professional handle it. You can always learn if you want to, but going at it alone the first time isn’t a good idea if you don’t know what’s going on. Your first step, of course, is to refill the fuel tank. Bleeding the furnace won’t help you at all if your tank is empty when you start the process. The furnace should start working again on its own. Bleeding the fuel line isn’t necessary unless the furnace doesn’t restart once you’ve put more oil inside. Typically, the reason for bleeding the furnace has to do with fuel levels: If you let the oil completely run out, that’s when the furnace may need extra help starting up again. To prevent this problem, refill the tank before the oil gets extremely low. You’ll also keep yourself from freezing when the furnace shuts off. Start by turning off the furnace. There should be a switch directly on your furnace for this. On many furnaces, the reset button automatically shuts them off, so you may not need to switch off your furnace manually. You’ll see a red light if your reset button has the furnace turned off already. If you’re not sure which will fit your furnace, check your manual or bring both along and see which is appropriate. A foot of tubing should do fine. An old bucket or coffee can will work. Put cat litter or sawdust in the container’s bottom if you don’t want oil to splash. Alternatively, grab an empty bottle, preferably at least 32 ounces. If you want to reuse the fuel you bleed into the container, make sure the container is clean and do not fill it with anything. You can then return the fuel to the furnace when you’re finished with the bleeding process, but only do so if the oil coming out is clean. If you end up with sludge, do not reuse it. You may want to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, since there’s a chance you’ll end up with oil somewhere on you. The fuel pump will have tubes going to it. The bleeder valve is going to be on one side of the fuel pump, and it’ll have a hex nut on it. The nut may be metal or it might be a rubber plug. Don’t panic if you don’t see it right away. It’s a little hidden on some furnaces. Then tighten it again, about a quarter turn, so oil doesn’t dribble out. Don’t unscrew the nut completely. Not everyone puts tubing on his or her bleeder valve. Some individuals just let the fuel dribble straight out into a container. If you don’t have nylon tubing and you need your furnace to restart, go ahead and follow the rest of the steps without it. Just be aware that the oil may splash, and the process will be messier this way. Also, make sure your container is sitting directly beneath the valve so oil doesn’t get on the floor. Remember how you loosened the valve before, then tightened it just enough to be sure you could turn it again quickly. Now’s the time to loosen it. You’ll probably need less than one turn to get the oil flowing. Loosen the valve until oil and air start to come out. Let it drain until solid fuel comes out. If your furnace automatically shuts itself off with the reset button, you might have to give it a couple of tries. If the furnace doesn’t turn on, you’ll need to call in a professional technician to take a look. The problem might be a clog, a damaged fuel line, or a pump issue. At this point, the burner should turn on. You’ll know it when you hear it; this is the sound you associate with the furnace kicking on. If that happens, congratulations. You’ve successfully bled and restarted your furnace. Remove your tubing, clean up your container, and enjoy the warmth. Start by loosening the bleeder valve and letting fuel come out. You can try this several times. However, if your furnace isn’t firing until you’ve done it numerous times, then you’ve got worn out parts and you need to call someone in to look at it. It shouldn’t take more than once or twice to bleed and restart your furnace when the furnace is in proper working order. If at any point in the process of bleeding the furnace something seems strange or you lose confidence, it’s time to call a professional. Similarly, if the process doesn’t work, something else is wrong and you need a technician to examine the furnace. Even if bleeding the furnace does work, but you find you have to do it frequently, it’s probably time for a professional opinion.
