I've recorded business meetings, training sessions, and product demonstrations, etc. I'm ridiculously tough on my electronics since I'm on the road every day; things tend to go flying around inside my van and then there's just the usual, normal wear and tear due that comes with daily use. The AX412 held up remarkably well until finally, the day came when I pressed the RECORD button and nothing happened. The button had apparently become stuck and after a lot of fiddling and fussing I was unable to get it to record. So it was that I decided to order the highly recommended Sony ICD-PX312 to replace the AX412. The PX312 was, quite frankly, a major let-down. While the PX312 looks almost identical to the AX412, it is really quite different where it counts. First of all, the AX412 has stereo mics; the PX312 has only one mic. If that is all you think your needs will require, then I'm sure the 312 will fit the bill nicely. But bear this in mind: I was still able to play back my old AX412 and compare the sound quality between it and the newer PX312. Bottom line: the AX412 has a much richer sound quality than the mono PX312, even when just doing voice recording. Obviously, this is due to the stereo mics of the 412 vs.Another thing: Using the AX412, I have been able to easily set up different folders for the various uses I put it to: I have a Personal folder, a Work folder, a Music folder, a Mileage folder (for tracking my mileage expenses for work), etc. It just seemed that the newer PX312 was just not that easy to set up this kind of folder arrangement that works best for me. I found the PX312 simply less intuitive than the AX412 when it came to doing this. Other features of the PX312 are identical to the 412, however. Please don't misunderstand: if all you are looking for is simply a good mono voice recorder, then I'm sure the ICD-PX312 would be a fine choice. But for me, the quality of the voice recordings were just not as good. Let me also just say this: the AX412 recorder is not perfect; it suffers from a volume level lower than I would like. I travel in a very noisy van and playing back a voice recording on the AX412 can be a challenge to hear. Given that the PX312 has a similar or even lower volume level than the AX, however, that may be an issue for others as well, particularly if you're playing it back in a noisy environment. On top of that, I'm also hard of hearing, so there's also that for me. Just as an aside: one of the reasons that I decided to choose the PX312 as a replacement was because it was one of the recommended digital recorders for use with Dragon Naturally Speaking, which I also use. In the end, I returned the PX312 and re-ordered the AX412. A final irony is that on the very day that the new Sony AX412 arrived, my old AX412 started working again. Naturally. I believe I will hang onto this new one anyway, since there remains the high probability that the record button will again get stuck and I'll be stuck without a very important work tool. When all is said and done, I'm sure the PX312 is probably a fine recorder, but it is more expensive than the AX412 with fewer bells and whistles in the bargain. Unless I'm missing something, here, that IS no bargain. I'll stick with my trusty AX412 instead and should anyone ask me, I would recommend the AX412 over the PX312.The user interface is very easy to learn and use. The sound quality, set at the highest setting, is nothing short of amazing to me for the price I paid. When I first loaded an MP3 from this dainty recorder onto my computer I was just expecting to get a somewhat colorless recording with extraneous sounds. We recorded in my garage using two tube amps and the recorder was set between the two at what I thought might be equal distance. The only sound on the recording are the two guitars and the two of us when we happened to speak. For those of you buying it as a voice recorder we were standing about 3-5 feet from the recorder and our voices pick up clear as a bell. The tone from our guitars is lovely played through my computer sound system. The small mono speaker on the recorder does what it's intended to do: provide you with quick playback if you need to check the session. All in all, this little gadget is entirely worth the 48 bucks I paid and I will pay it again if this one ever has a problem.I've had it less than a year and it is already broke. It has nice features, makes quality recordings and is easy enough to operate. However, it appears that you get what you pay for. I used it almost daily for an entire semester and for a few classes over the summer. When the fall semester started I noticed it was draining batteries in a period of a few days, when previously the AAA batteries would last for months. As a result I can no longer reliably turn it on or off, and the 'hold' feature is completely useless now. For example, I will turn it on to record a lecture but at the end of class I can no longer turn it off. Additionally, when the device is off I can put it in the 'hold' position (which is to ensure that you cannot accidentally turn it on, or press buttons when not in use) and it will turn itself on randomly and subsequently drain the batteries. As a result, I can only recommend this product for its price point and not its reliability. If you are the type of person that needs to rely on a recorder that will work consistently, I would recommend you dish out the extra cash and try a nicer model. Additional Note: Sony provides a limited 1-year warranty on this product so it is possible for me to return it, but I fear that the same issue will sprout its nasty head again since the part that wore out is the most commonly used part of the device.I would highly recommend this digital recorder for personal use.
