When selecting applicati on equipment and insecticide s, applicators depend on recommended equipment operati ng parame- ters, as supplied by the manufactu rer, along with recommended application rat es and droplet sizes as detailed by chemical labels to ensure the most efficacious applicatio n. For vector control with space sprays, the droplet size should be less tha n 30 m m volume median diameter (D V0.5; Ledson and Matthews 1992; WHO 2006a, 2006b). As droplet size is 1 of the mos t significant factor s affecting the success of vector contro l applica- tions, it is critical to know baseline droplet and spray cloud characteristic s for the equipment used. Providing that droplet-size data and guidance to me et these label requirements was a primary objective for conducting the testing that is report ed in this manuscript. Another objecti ve of this study was to use a laser-diffraction drople t analysis system to obtain baseline droplet and spray cloud formation informat ion on available spraying equipment that is either already incorpor ated or could be incorporated into Department of Defense (DoD) pest managemen t programs. This would provide program managers with the information that would all ow them to select the best sprayers for their particular ne eds. Droplet sizing system A Sympatec Helos laser diffraction dr oplet sizing system (Sympatec Inc., Clausthal, Ger- many) was utilized in this study. The authors found that when using the laser sy stem outdoors, the last cha nnel (i.e., sizing bins) of the Helos system should be tu rned off or not factored into the droplet-size measuremen t results. This channel represents the largest droplet size and tends to pick up some noise or random signals, possibly from equipment vibrat ion or scattered ambient light. With this channel turned off, the dynamic range of the instrument is from 0.5 to 735 m m. These channels are not turned off if any droplets are measured within 2 sizing bin s of the smallest turned-off channel. For the se studies, this criterion meant that no droplets greate r than 515 m m in diameter were measured dur ing any of the atomization tests. The spray droplet-size data were determined and reported as a mean and standard deviation corresponding to the data measured during the 3 replications for each combinatio n of sprayer and pesticide. Means and standard dev iations of the volume median diameter (VMD or D V0.5 ), D V0.1, and D V0.9 were determined. The D V0.5 is the droplet diameter ( m m) where 50 of the spray volume is contained in dro plets smaller than this value (Standard E1620, ASTM 2004). Sim ilarly, the D V0.1 and D V0.9 values are the diameters at which 10 and 90 , respectively, of the spray volume is contained in droplets of this size or less. Statistical analyses The objective of this study was not to rank or statistically separate the spraye rs; therefore, no statistical analyses of the data were per formed. The means and standard deviations of the measured droplet-size parame ters are presented. Table 1. Atomization parameter s for oil-based spray solutions.The CDF Maxi-Pro 4 sprayer allowed the user to vary the spray pressure from 4 to 6 psi. When the pressure was increased fro m 4 to 6 psi on the CDF Maxi-Pro 4 sprayer, the D V0.5 increased from 15.5 to 20.0 m m and the Vol, 20 m m decreased fro m 78.6 to 50.0 ,w h i c hw a s opposite of the data c ollected with the BVA oil for this sprayer. This i s likely due to differences in the physical properti es of the 2 spray solutions and should remind all applicators that one cannot assume that all spray formulati ons will generate the same drop let spectra for a given sprayer. Diesel-based sprays The CDF Golden Eagle and LF Eliminator generated sprays wit h a D V0.5 of around 3.4 m m for the undiluted dies el and diesel plus insecti- cide solutions (Table 3). There were essentially no changes in droplet si ze when Fyfanon or Kontrol were added to the di esel at the dilutions used in these studies. Both sprayers also generated spray clou ds in which, 100 of the spray volume was made up of drop lets less than 20 m mi nd i a m e t e r.There was a range in droplet sizes generated by the different sprayers with the different spray solutions tested. The other units may have been able to generate these droplet spectra und er different operational condition s than those tested. These data allow users to select the spray solution and sprayer that generates the drople t- size spectra that meet their specifi c spray appli- cation scenarios. For example, if an appli cator is making a barrier control applicati on where the desired result is that droplets impact and are retained on the surface, a sprayer that gen erates larger droplets (i.e.,. 40 m m) would be selected. If the application called for a spray that moves laterally downwind to impact flying insects (Brown 1968) a sprayer that gen erates a spray cloud with a volume median diameter of between 8a n d3 0 m m would be selected. This work, along with previous and future studies, provides a database detailing the drople t-size characteristics resulting from equipment, operational setting s, and spray formulation combination s to aid and support decisions made by field users. Any sampling device used for this purpose will have an efficiency of collection that is a function of the sampling device itself, the droplet size of the spray being sampled, and the airspeeds under which the sampling is conducted. This study focuses on two rotary impaction devices, the Hock and the FLB samplers, that were evaluated under two droplet sized sprays and four airspeeds. The collected spray concentrations were compared to standard passive samplers whose theoretical collection efficiency was calculated and used to estimate the actual spray volume sampled. Additionally, droplet sizing information derived from image analysis of droplet deposits on the rotary impactor collection surfaces was compared to actual measurements of droplet size of the sampled spray cloud. Generally, overall collection efficiencies ranged from 2.5 to 20, with the FLB being more efficient than the Hock and with lower efficiencies at higher airspeeds for both samplers. These spray mixtures were applied on pigeonpea crop based on Economic Threshold Level (ETL, one larvae per plant) using the ULV sprayer. The findings suggested that the sesamum oil carrier in ULV sprayer is suitable and practicable in pigeonpea ecosystem for effective management of pod borer with no risk of phytotoxicity, spray drift and operational difficulties. The foregoing studies indicated that the performance of sesamum oil carriers was superior to other carriers in terms of suppression of larval population, reduction in pod damage and harnessing higher yield. In this study, we consider the mosquito as our model organism. Understanding how mosquitoes dry themselves may help to understand their resistance to insecticides (Hoffmann et al. 2009 ). WHO guidelines state that adulticide interventions are recommended only in case of disease outbreak. However, peridomestic sprayings are carried out routinely to reduce Aedes albopictus (Skuse) nuisance, at least in Italy. Failing in keeping low adult abundance overtime triggers the need for further applications. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of a common control strategy routinely performed by citizens in highly infested urban sites inside the metropolitan city of Rome using a freely purchasable pyrethroid and a hand-held sprayer. Moreover, the effectiveness evaluated in three field experiments was compared to the one achieved by blending the pyrethroid with a new carbon-based liquid additive. Results: Blending the insecticide with the additive lengthened mosquito recovery time over 14 days. Conclusion. Peridomestic sprayings largely reduce mosquito population immediately after treatment but fail to keep low mosquito abundance on a longer period, partially explaining the uncontrolled repetitions of treatments. Researchers and applicators have several different techniques available to assess spray droplet size from spray nozzles. The objective of this study was to compare the droplet size spectrum produced by three nozzles commonly used in vector control in a high-speed wind tunnel, when characterized using three different laser-based droplet size measurement systems. Three droplet sizing systems: Malvern Spraytec laser diffraction, Sympatec HELOS laser diffraction, and TSI Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA), were simultaneously operated, but under different operating conditions, to measure the spray droplet size-spectra for three spray nozzles.
