Of course, we want and expect each camper to improve their swimming and water activity skills, but before that can happen, we take every possible step to ensure that campers who come to any water activity are properly supervised and have the necessary skills to participate safely and confidently. In fact, we bring the waterfront staff to camp a full week before regular staff orientation begins. During this time, all waterfront, boating, TREK (outdoor) and 4n4 staff are Red Cross certified in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid. Those possessing these credentials when they arrive at camp receive the training as a refresher course so that we can make certain that everyone is equally prepared. Once the training is done, all staff who supervise the campers on or around the water are completely equipped to do so. We learn and repeat emergency drills until they become second nature. Waterfront staff learn the skills necessary to conduct general swims, lake swims and all other waterfront activities. They are trained to assist the waterfront staff so that during each waterfront activity, there are many sets of eyes on each camper. All campers receive the same message, and hear the same expectations for safe and enjoyable participation, regardless of how long they have been attending Echo Lake. During this evaluation, we are looking mainly for confidence in the water and endurance. The results of the evaluation allow us to place each child in one of three categories for general swim: Shallow, Middle and Deep. The initial assessment is often just a starting point, as many children who don’t swim much at home, quickly improve in strength and confidence and move up to another level quite rapidly. For those for whom this presents a bigger challenge, we immediately begin one-on-one lessons so that each child can move on to the highest level possible. In part 2, we will discuss how we help campers to reach their potential as swimmers. Website by 829 Studios. But, as parents, you also want to make sure your kids are safe while spending the day at the pool or lake. Accidents happen all the time and even the strongest swimmer can struggle. When there is a swimming buddy present, there is always someone there to get help in an emergency. This is a good rule to have for adults as well as children. Even if your child knows how to swim, a seasonal water safety program offers excellent reminders about water safety. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that swimming lessons are not effective tools for drowning prevention among young children and reminds parents that the most effective prevention, is vigilant supervision when young children are in the water. Learn CPR so that if something does happen, you know what to do. Sunburns are not only uncomfortable, they can be dangerous too. Keep extra bottles of sunscreen on hand when enjoying summer activities whether you are at a pool or swimming in a lake, so that it can be reapplied every time your child comes out of the water. The one thing you don’t want to have happen is introducing your child to a body of water they aren’t equipped to handle. Currents, waves, or even being in over their head can place your child in unnecessary danger. Further, the National Safety Council suggests that parents do not allow children to play around them at all. Use drain covers in your own pool to reduce the risks. Panic is one of the most lethal things in the water. Teach your children to think and act calmly when they find themselves struggling. It also helps for parents to refresh their breathing exercises and other coping mechanisms so that they can keep panic at bay if suddenly their child is struggling in water. Avoid drinking alcohol when in the water or supervising children who are in the water as it may slow your response time or impair your judgment with devastating consequences. Everyone in a boat needs to wear an appropriately sized and fitted life jacket. That way if there is an accident, the life jacket can help keep even unconscious and injured passengers afloat in the water. Clutter poses a risk of tripping and falling into the water. Risk is significantly elevated if a child is injured or becomes unconscious when playing near any water. Running is another activity that increases the risk of falling into the water when children aren’t prepared for it and may react negatively. This saves lives and prevents unsuspecting children from wandering into your pool unnoticed. Reading a book, making calls, or sending out text messages may be a tempting way for mom or dad to pass time while at the pool or the lake, but taking your eyes of your young child, even for a minute, can be dangerous. Additionally, make it clear that your child will not get to swim or play in the water if he or she doesn’t honor your rules for the pool or lake. Not only might it help save your child’s life, but it also may allow you to act swiftly when other children are in danger too. Seconds matter when it comes to drowning accidents. Make sure you don’t waste precious time looking elsewhere if a pool, spa, or lake is close by. Water for playing in is one of the strongest magnets there is for small children. Avoid allowing children, especially smaller children, to swim in water that is too cold. For most children, the ideal water temperature will be between 82 and 86 degrees. Anything cooler than 70 degrees may be too cold. Make Sure You’re Insured Properly! Shared family experiences are essential. Family is essential. Travel to see your loved ones if you’re able. Family connections create memories. While I understand COVID-19 precautions, once family members were vaccinated, I planned a purposeful weekend birthday gathering among my in-laws, sister-in-law, our daughters, my husband and me. To read more of Katie Pinke's The Pinke Post columns, click here. We’ll have our first hotel stay in more than a year. While our travel won’t take us across state lines, my kids need shared family experiences again and a break from the stay-at-home routine. Government guidelines and expert advice aren’t required to sell me on the fact family experiences are essential. Most of our shared experiences this past year have consisted of outdoor sports or indoor board games, such as Catan, Ticket to Ride or the card game Monopoly Deal, my daughter Anika’s absolute favorite to beat me in most evenings. If you crave connection and new experiences away from home, plan a trip now. Book the vacation. Pack a bag. Hit the road. Board the plane. A pandemic changed the course of how we live our lives. We’re not going back to exactly the way things used to be. I’ll always keep bottles of hand sanitizer handy, and we’ll wash our hands longer and more frequently. I might always wear a mask on an airplane. The COVID-19 pandemic gave me time to carve out what I want to focus on most in life, more freedom to root myself in shared family experiences with those I care about the most in life. Plan the long weekend adventure now. Our family plans to head west to Medora, N.D., for a much-awaited visit to the Medora Musical and visit to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Buy tickets to the baseball game you longed to attend last season. Do not skip out this summer. Go, experience the game in the ballpark with a hot dog in hand. Schedule the family gathering you missed last summer. Call your kids, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles and forever friends you missed the most this past year. Our kids joined a new 4-H club last fall. With a long-awaited return to showing at a county fair, they’ve been walking their beef heifers this winter and have a few static projects to finish this spring. If you have kids or grandkids in 4-H, mark the date on your calendar for the county fair to attend. Attend the class reunion or small-town summer festival. Book your flight to go home or if you live near the location for the reunion or festival, volunteer to take on a role in planning it. Decide what is best for you, your loved ones and family. Follow precautions and what you need to do to feel and stay safe. This year, mark your calendar with a few family times you missed in 2020. Shared family experiences are essential. Pinke is the publisher and general manager of Agweek.Family is essential. This month, my husband also took his parents to their first high school basketball game of the winter, a regional championship game where a nephew of my in-laws coached his team in a win to advance to the state tournament. We’ll have our first hotel stay in more than a year. The COVID-19 pandemic gave me time to carve out what I want to focus on most in life, more freedom to root myself in shared family experiences with those I care about the most in life. Look ahead to summer months. Plan the long weekend adventure now. Book your flight to go home or if you live near the location for the reunion or festival, volunteer to take on a role in planning it. Family experiences qualify as essential travel in year two of the COVID-19 pandemic. Decide what is best for you, your loved ones and family.
