When such locations cannot be avoided, it is recommended that a suitable drain pan, adequately drained, be installed under the appliance. Prior to installation, check the rating plate of the boiler to ensure the unit matches gas type, gas pressure, water pressure and electrical supply. If the unit does not match the requirements, do not install. After the removal of all the packaging, check that the appliance has not been damaged. In case of doubt, do not attempt to use the product but refer to the supplier. Installers must abide by local code requirements regarding the installation of CO detectors. The use of a certified carbon monoxide detector is recommended but not required by PENSOTTI. “In the State of Massachusetts only”. Does anyone have any experience with pensotti boilers. Personally I have never heard of the brand but after looking at the install manual it seems like a descent unit. The proposed boiler is a solenne boiler model PCH 50B. Just curious if any of you guys have had any experience with them. The house has an indirect water heater as well.I would rather go with bosch or viessmann. They are similar to a Burnham MPO. I believe Pensotti makes the block for Bisai, but I could be wrong. They seem descent enough. I haven't come across any of their condensing boilers yet. Before you commit to a boiler that's not common where you live, find out about parts availability.I was looking to move there a few years ago (to start a business) and this was the family that the mayor told me made these boilers. That's all I know of it and as I said. I believe that is the story.Post Them Here All rights reserved. Pressing the water heater off button deactivates the Flue test function active function. (Chimney-Sweeper) The Flue test function operates the water “High Fire”. This fear is not limited to Mrs Sensible exploding when she realises I have failed to pay the electric bill on time and ENEL have automatically reduced our available power down to zip, or maybe just enough electricity to power two 60 watt light bulbs. By the way how can they do that. This is Italy it is way too technical for ENEL and besides nothing functions that fast. My mother had one of those long tube vacuum cleaners, the ones that mothers drag around behind them. From what I have been told, I decided to sit astride the hoover and pretend I was riding a horse. Everything was fun, until somebody who had a really strange sense of humour decided to find out what would happen if they pressed the big red button and switched it on whilst I was playing my little game. I don’t want to thank the person who pressed the red button, but the traumatic experience has in the past, saved me from many injuries. To explain how quickly I can move when startled, let me give you this example: A lunatic of a neighbor who disliked my elder brother, once decided to bang on the roof of my brothers van with a rather large stick. Before my brother had got out of the van to hit him, I had already left the van and sprinted 40 metres up the road and was in a defensive crouch waiting for the (what I thought was exploding van) bits of van to fly overhead. I was 15 at the time. Using the heating for only 4 hours a day might seem frugal or penny-pinching to you, but in reality it will save us hundreds of Euros. When the boiler starts, it sounds like a jet engine ready for take off, I cry as I can hear hundreds of euros of gas being sucked into it. Now this boiler has sat dormant for the past eight months and this morning I attempted to light it. This morning I flipped the main electrical switch and turned on the pump controls, set the clock to on and waited. It normally takes 15 seconds to ignite and start burning my Euros; nothing it didn’t even fart. I then remembered I needed to go outside and turn on the big gas valve. I was just sending Mrs S a whatsapp message when it shut down. So I rang Francois our boiler expert and left him a garbled message. Something like “I Englishman, please boiler kaput fix today?” As I hung up and wondered if I could have phrased my request any better, I decided to try a little DIY. Both pumps had seized, so I gave them a technical tap with my hammer, swore at them, reassembled and turned on the gas and electric. The pumps started turning, so I lite the boiler and retreated to a safe place. It whooshed farted and stopped. He probably plays my messages to his friends while they are getting drunk on grappa. It hummed, farted once again and burst into life. I carefully replaced the cover, I have to be honest I don’t like or trust this ancient machine and my natural flight response was screaming in my head. RUN! It still might go BANG. I too feel at any minute it could explode unexpectedly. Grateful for the heat it provides, but fearful of it just the same!! The pipes look like spaghetti and the heating guy just scratches his head and looks at it when he arrives. Then, there is a separate electric water heater for the kitchen and one for the bathroom. I’m learning to love cold showers. They are great in the summer but I would love thick carpets in the winter. This was NOT in the 18th century but in the 60 and 70s. I see that things have progressed indeed, but only a little, if boilers are still manual and only a courageous home owner can dare to light one.So I do prefer things that don’t look like they will go bang when I light them We moved to a house high in the Colorado mountains that was heated with a wood stove (I related to your earlier post), but every other person’s woodsmoke in the town settled on our house. My doc told me that if I didn’t want to be one of those people in Walmart dragging an oxygen tank, we needed to move. We now live lower in the same mountains, so far out in the woods that no one’s smoke gets near us. Do you have a problem with woodsmoke in your town? Only the house further down the road burns wood so we don’t notice it. However we used to live in a little village and I am sure in the winter 85 of them burned wood. The smoke mixed with the incredible fog we get here produced thick smog. Worse than anything I saw in the UK prior to them banning coal etc. Diesel powered hair dryer!! ?? I loved the house but Mrs S vetoed it because of the heating. So, do all Italians just huddle together through the winter and hope for spring?! That’s when we obtained a mini wood burning cooker and stuck it in the lounge! I tried to make it work myself but my wife made me stop when it started releasing clouds of black smoke when I tried to restart it for the third time. I sympathise with your boiler fears! Papounet fitted the boiler at his hose: the tubes going in and out look like spaghetti junction, and it took me ages to get the thing started last year. Or if I had been born with 3 arms, I could have stuck a finger in both ears when I lit the boiler instead of only one ear. Here in Spain I have electrical heater and holes around windows and doors, fresh air you know. I’m looking very much forward to the Spring, electricity is very expensive too. Merry Christmas to you and yours ?? In the shower, washing the hair dye out (very important!) and it suddenly runs very cold. I don’t have the best relationship with my shower so cue the effing and blinding. Hope out and check the other taps in the flat. What the hell do I do now. Start whatsapping my family and friends. Panicking because, like you, I always pay my bills late. Sending pictures. Dad says the pilot light has probably gone out. Clamber onto a chair to see if there’s a flame. Nothing. Okay, so this is probably the problem. Nothing on the damn thing looks like a button. So I just start poking everything and eventually come across a button disguised as a light. Hoorah! Problem solved! Hope back in the shower and curse the Italian who installed a boiler that doesn’t have an obvious reset button. Oh, Italy. Don't be shy. Cancel reply Notify me of new posts via email. I am concerned about running positive pressure over fire with a gas burner. The boiler is 5 years old and I don't think it had been cleaned until today. I thought I cleaned it very thoroughly but now I am wondering. Any ideas? The draft being -.03 is that up or downstream from the barometric relief damper? Is it easy to do the oil filter.WHat nozzle would it need.Last year, oil company serviced it, and i watched and asked questions. All he did, was change the oil filter, and sprayed the nozzle with some kinda methanol spray.Behind hte Mectron 5M, on left, thiers air slots.Through the air slots, yuo can see a small motor,a nd the lines. WHat kinda fuel nozzle, would i need as replacement.Inspecting and cleaning the burner fan. Doing at least a visual inspection of the tank (if it is accessable) and the oil lines. Firing the burner and doing a complete combustion analysis (preferably electronic). Testing all of the safety controls. I'm sure I've left out some steps but as you can see, it isn't a 15 - 30 minute job.Alicia HenryI would like to know how to change the filter on my oil burner, does it jus.It is the sytem that heats the water with natural gas and heats with the water. Anyway, my husband says that the fan should stay on all the time to circulate the warm air and I say it should stay on auto as the fan running all the time would cause the electricity bills to increase significantly. So who is right? Would the cost of running the fan all the time out weigh keeping the thermostat up higher and the fan on auto. Please help. Jen I cleaned it today and noticed that when the blower fan is on it blows ALOT of air out of the flame inspection door when opened. I don't know if it's always been like that or if that's how it's supposed to be?? I never smell any fumes or anything in the home. The return is fed through the heater cover and it's located in the hallway. Thanks for any help you can offer. Jon We welcome your comments andAll rights reserved. Please call Member Services at 1-800-333-0663 Boilers heat water, and then distribute hot steam or hot water to rooms through a series of pipes to heat the home. Steam is sent to radiators, while hot water flows to radiators or radiant heating systems. Boilers are fueled by natural gas, heating oil, propane, electricity or a biodiesel-oil blend. New systems are very energy efficient, with efficiencies as high as 98.5 percent. However, unlike other heating methods, there is typically a lag time between the boiler turning on and the heat being dispersed. Boilers are required by the federal government to be at least 80 percent efficient, and can have efficiencies as high as 98.5 percent. Some boilers can be expensive to install, but all types typically last 15 to 30 years. However, natural gas is not available everywhere, and some homeowners at the end of a gas pipeline pay higher fuel prices. Propane typically is more expensive than natural gas, but it’s available throughout the U.S. If you buy a oil-fired boiler, you’ll need heating oil delivered and stored in tanks like the one above, and your operating costs will be affected by the rise and fall of oil prices. Depending on oil prices, biodiesel heating oil can be cost-competitive with standard oil. However, because it burns cleaner and lubricates the system, biodiesel fuel can reduce your boiler service and cleaning costs. However, they typically are not economical because electricity costs more than other fuel types in many parts of the country. If you are interested in electric heating, consider a heat pump. They can provide consistent, comfortable heat. In addition, a radiator can warp or create a groove in the floor. If that happens, the radiator may tilt, causing it to make loud banging noises. Plus, steam radiators on exterior walls can radiate some heat to the outdoors, and limit your ability to position furniture around the room. Hot water radiators can reduce your home’s energy consumption because they allow you to control the temperature of each floor or a large space. A heating professional can install automatic valves on the radiators, and connect them to separate thermostats. Plus, like steam models, upright hot water radiators can limit your ability to position furniture. Hydronic systems can heat a whole house, but they’re mainly used to heat a single room or area, and some can be zoned so thermostats regulate each space. It also doesn’t distribute allergens like forced-air systems can, and uses little electricity. However, hydronic systems can be expensive to install and to repair, and may not be as efficient if the floor is covered with thick carpeting. A condensing boiler concentrates water vapor produced in the heating process, and uses waste heat to preheat cold water entering the boiler. Condensing boilers are extremely energy efficient because they can provide ample heat while operating at lower temperatures. Non-condensing boilers are 80 percent to 88 percent efficient, while condensing boilers have efficiencies greater than 88 percent. Non-Sealed Combustion Boilers are either sealed-combustion or non-sealed combustion units. You should buy one that is sealed combustion because it brings outside air into the burner and directs exhaust gases outside. Non-sealed combustion boilers draw heated air in and then send it up the chimney, wasting the energy used to heat the air. Also, sealed-combustion boilers won’t introduce dangerous gases into your home. But if you live in a warm climate, you may not need a central heating system. In that case, consider a heat pump, which can satisfy your air conditioning needs as well as moderate heating requirements. However, the fuel type you choose will depend on what’s available in your area. If the boiler is undersized, it won’t work efficiently; if it is oversized, it will cost you more to heat your home. Work with a heating and cooling professional, who should use an Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Manual J calculation to determine the right boiler type and size. The calculation will take into consideration your home’s foundation, wall thicknesses, insulation values, windows, air filtration and more. New boilers must have an AFUE rating of at last 80 percent, and high-efficiency models are 90 to 98.5 percent efficient. The higher the rating, the higher the equipment cost, but the lower the operating cost. Programmable thermostats can save you 10 percent annually on your heating bills. The technician should. Automatic vs. Manual Ignition Pellet Stoves There are two types of boiler pilot lights. One is a manual type that you must light, and the other is an automatic pilot ignition type that lights itself. Before lighting any boiler, you must know which type you have; there are two ways to determine this. An automatic ignition type will have a safety label on the front of the boiler that tells you that it is an automatic ignition system. If there is no label, look at the top of the gas control knob. If the control knob has two settings, on and off, it is an automatic ignition system. A manual ignition will have three settings -- on, off and pilot. Never attempt to light an automatic ignition system manually. The gas control knob box will be gray and situated near the floor at the front of the boiler. The knob will be situated on top. If you smell any gas, allow the smell to dissipate for 15 minutes. Open windows to facilitate venting. Remove the access panel to gain access to the pilot light. In most cases, this panel is located adjacent to the gas control knob box. The pilot light orifice will look much like an upturned piece of metal tubing -- the pilot light burns at the tip of this tubing.
