Blunt Guy 5.0 out of 5 stars The rest is largely personal memoir. I learned more about the author than about mexico. He also editorializes constantly. As someone who did grad work in area studies, his political views are predictable and boring. I could go on, or I could list all the silly parts of the book, but this is already more time than i wanted to spend on it.Info Sheet which tends to be overly conservative and makes places sound like demilitarized zones. This guide put a little reality back into it. The author gives some cultural tips mainly for the gringo (US citizen) to help mostly in social situations. Especially useful, were the tips on how to recognize a good Mexican restaurant, how to address people in social situations, and other Mexicanisms such as various commonly used slang. I feel this is a good guide to get a feel for the people and the place especially for the casual visitor going to the non-tourist areas of Mexico so you don't act like such a gringo. Not really a book to keep as a long-term reference to Mexico, I'd try to borrow it before buying it. It contains a lot of information, but is written in an extremely awkward style. There were a few grammar and typo mistakes, but the bigger issue was the awkward phrasing and word choices. It felt like it had been written by someone who learned English as a second language. You can understand her meaning, but the words d This book has to be the worst of the Culture Shock bunch. You can understand her meaning, but the words don’t flow naturally like they would from a native speaker. It also felt like a long dry paper written for school. The new environment is explained by someone who notices the same things I would and has a similar background to me. That was not the case with this book. The author wasn’t an unbiased observer in these areas, but seemed to be trying to convert the reader, which I found highly annoying. I would have loved information about how to function around these areas as an expat while maintaining my own (Western) beliefs, but that wasn’t provided. Instead, the author attempted to sell me on how wonderful all these things are. In another area, the currency is converted into Mexican dollars to explain the price of an object. Mexican dollars?? Not American dollars or the British pound. And later, size 38 was used in reference to women’s clothing. I’m not sure if that is a European size or a Chinese size but it was confusing for this American reader. Those are just a few examples, but overall author clearly does not understand the “Western” mindset, so she can not do a good job of explaining Hong Kong life to readers. The author also seemingly gloats about how wonderful Chinese are, even if the expat reader isn’t smart enough or connected enough to appreciate it. She repeated ends chapters saying something like “you probably want to hop on the first plane now and leave, but you shouldn’t”. Reading this book killed my desire to ever visit (much less live) in Hong Kong. I had previously thought of it as a cool ex-British colony with a Chinese flair. Now I think of it as Chinese and totally messed up. It seems like a loud, crowded, dirty place where you have to use a third party to accomplish anything. It covered the main points of culture shock customs and etiquette very well. A lot more useful than ordinary travel guides - written more for people planning on living in another country for a while. Despite working with Indians for several years, the book shone light on some little things about not only their culture, but my own that helped with interactions. However, as with any description of culture, there were certain things that don't align with my own experiences. Perhaps its because I was working with educated and (by Indian standards) upper-middle class Indians, but their lives didn't seem nearly as backwards as the book describes. I have to wonder if the book isn't written primarily from a rural Indian background. Finally, I get the impression that the author is an ardent feminist. Whenever the genders are discussed, it seems to always be from an angle of men oppressing women. It isn't that Indian culture isn't sexist, because in many ways it is, but it seemed instead of describing the issues for what they were, the author was looking to put Indian culture on trial. While the book still succeeds in conveying gender-based culture, I felt as if I couldn't just take her descriptions of anything related to gender at face value. Policy recommendations for cultural and creative sectors in light of COVID-19 and its consequences In the short term: Ensure that public support for COVID-19 relief does not exclude CCS firms and workers due to their non-traditional business models and employment contracts Consult with CCS network organisations, representatives of self-employed professionals, small cultural and creative businesses, and sectoral employer organisations to raise the efficacy of policy measures Address gaps in self-employment support schemes by simplifying eligibility criteria and making them accessible to hybrid forms of employment (e.g. those that combine salaried, part-time work and run their own business as a self-employed person as well). Impact of the COVID-19 crisis on cultural and creative sectors and its consequences for cities and regions Along with the tourism industry, 3 the OECD 4 has identified arts, entertainment and recreation as among the sectors most at risk due to the impact of containment measures. Other sectors most at risk include manufacturing of transport equipment, construction, wholesale and retail trade, air transport, accommodation and food services, and real estate services. The risk exposure associated with cultural and creative sectors (CCS) is uneven across regions. While employment in CCS represented on average 1.5 of employment in OECD countries in 2017, the weight of those industries in the labour market varies a lot from one region to another. 5 In 230 (63) out of 367 regions in OECD countries with data, the regional employment share in CCS is higher than 1 (Figures 1 and 3). In general, the region with the highest share is the capital region of a country.
