Kennington 5.0 out of 5 stars But there are two important roles which I can see for this book. (1) To assist the decision to see or not to see a doctor. (2) To help make sense of a diagnosis made by a medical professional. Actually the decision to see or not see a doctor is almost always the first step in diagnosis. The patient generally determines the timing of when to see a doctor, and whether that is at a local practice or at an emergency ward, or by phoning for an ambulance, or possibly to just wait until more symptoms accumulate.http://www.net-work.cz/data/fat-cat-dart-board-manual.xml

So even though self-diagnosis is going to be wrong most of the time, the doctor-visit-decision is really the first stage of diagnosis. That's where I think this book is excellent. At a rough count, I think there are 101 classifications of symptoms in this book. Most home medical books, and the professional books also, are arranged by malady, which means you have to read the whole book to find your symptoms. The classifications in this Merck symptoms home manual are very well chosen for easy interpretation by the non-medical user. There are two sections, acute and chronic. So I look for persistent cough with no other symptoms. This is a bit mysterious because usually a cough means an infection. In other words, no need to panic. The way the tables are organised makes it easy to exclude the causes which are incompatible with the symptoms and signs. This is in total contrast to the almost complete uselessness of books which are organised according to the malady or underlying cause. That was with the big medical reference books. So I think that this book is perfect for the first step in the diagnosis, the decision to go to emergency, phone for an appointment, or leave it for a week. The second thing which I think this book is very useful for is understanding a diagnosis when it has been given by a doctor. Then the questions, examination and tests made by the doctor make good sense. But comprehension after a successful diagnosis is less important than the initial decision to seek or not seek professional help.Even doctors who have the P.D.R. in their office have been known to sneak a peek at this one. Would make a great companion volume to the self-help TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.Often the terminology was foreign to me, and there was no glossary included. This book is far easier to understand. It covers a wide variety of symptoms with a few illustrations and many easy-to-read charts. I found this to be far more useful to me (any layman) than the original version.http://petra-electronics.com/gctcms/fckeditor/userfiles/federal-pa-300-manual.xmlAs a Medical transcriptionist, I was mightily impressed when looking up several issues and really liked the explanations.Just a little difficult to get to what you are trying to find out about. This is sad.I use quite a bit.Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page. Packed with essential information on diagnosing and treating medical disorders, this handy, compact guide was written by a team of clinicians for everyday use by medical professionals for delivery of the best care to their patients. Designed for maximum clinical utility, the new Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy 19th edition makes it easy to find the right information, right when it is needed. It is a must-have for medical students, residents, practicing physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Ten Interesting Facts from New Content in The Merck Manual, 19th Edition Pneumonia in elderly patients may be indicated by malaise, anorexia, or confusion. On average, elderly patients have 6 diagnosable disorders, and the primary care physician is often unaware of some of them. A disorder in one organ system can weaken another system, exacerbating the deterioration of both and leading to disability, dependence, and, without intervention, death.http://dev.pb-adcon.de/node/23833 Annually, 30 to 40 of elderly people living in the community fall; 50 of nursing home residents fall. The color (eg, yellow, green) and thickness of sputum do not help differentiate bacterial causes of cough from other causes. The severity of dyspnea is not always proportional to the severity of the cause (eg, pulmonary embolism in a fit, healthy person may cause only mild dyspnea). Although angina can be felt anywhere between the ear and the umbilicus (and often not in the chest), it is typically consistently related to physical or emotional stress, ie, patients do not experience angina from climbing one flight of stairs one day and tolerate 3 flights the next day. Palpitations are not a reliable indicator of a significant arrhythmia, but palpitations in a patient with structural heart disease or an abnormal ECG may be a sign of a serious problem and warrant investigation. Syncope precipitated by unpleasant physical or emotional stimuli (eg, pain, fright), occurring in the upright position and often preceded by nausea, weakness, yawning, apprehension, blurred vision, or diaphoresis suggests vasovagal syncope. A history of oil droplets in stool, particularly if associated with weight loss, suggests malabsorption. If the difference in pupil size is greater in the dark, the smaller pupil is abnormal; if the difference in pupil size is greater in light, the larger pupil is abnormal. Amazon Customer 5.0 out of 5 stars However, Merck constantly updates the online version. Medical and scientific professionals should look into paying for the online access to obtain the most current data 'on demand.' The information is grouped by bodily systems (e.g. immune system, endocrine system) and is explained logically. If a layman is willing to cross-reference some definitions, that layman can learn a lot. I bought this in 2017, even though I new the next edition is scheduled to be released in 2018. I did not want to wait several months for the information. It is comprehensive in its coverage of the etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of diseases of the human body and contains the latest research results on the treatment options. It's really not that difficult for the layman to understand the medical terminology and the result is factual understanding of the major aspects of disease which you will NOT get from the standard home health care books from Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Mayo Clinic, the AMA or even the Merck Home Health handbook. And, unlike the Merck Manual, these books directed to the laity do not contain the diagnostic information upon which physicians decide precisely what disease they are presented with. Yes, there will be much superfluous information which you may never use, but, when you want and need the information about a specific disease, here's where you should start your education. It is the most comprehensive, most informative, best written of any out there, and it covers every medical issue one can think of and many one can't. Some physicians I know keep a copy in their offices, and will dash over to do a quick check of something in it, especially when what they're checking on is not within their specialty. Additionally, a quick read is like a refresher course in whatever issue is at hand. Don't get me wrong, this book, although written for doctors and nurses, can be easily used by folks who have some knowledge of medicine, or even the complete layman, by purchasing along with it a decent medical dictionary such as Dorland's( Amazon has the latest edition of Dorland's for sale as I write this). I keep several Medical books in my house, but the one I go to most often, and the one whose information I trust most is the Merck Manual. The newest Revised Edition is currently available, and now is the time to buy it. There isn't a medical website that can offer you the kind of information, in detail, that you can find in the Merck.I had slipped in this endeavor since the 16th Edition so for this effort, the comparison with the current 19th is with that elderly tome. And it is a very worthwhile edition to have in the home library. Some might say this is too technical for the non-medical-trained reader but that would be wrong. The writers of these many sections on the various specialties do provide technical material but that is welcome for understanding. Most of the technical terms -- taken alone -- would mean little were they not always sustained with discussions that give the reader a good idea on what's happening to his or her health. It might well be that in most cases the information gained will assist the reader in discussions that follow in person with the professional medical specialist. At the least, it gives the patient or information seeker a well established view of the illness or other medical matter that need to be better understood. I think it is safe to say that in all cases that are looked up by a person with a serious question about an existing or feared illness or other medical problem the information in this edition will give the reader a start in understanding the problem and that helps the healing process or, in some cases, the persons providing care to a patient at home some knowledge about the problem at hand. There are new elements in this edition that are very helpful in tracking many specific ailments and those are most welcome to this long-time user of the Merck Manual. It's a big book that can appear fearsome to those not familiar with this search for understanding of a complex science but well worth the effort to understand a problem and the work being done by the professionals so heal the ailment. Bill EgerMost of my practice was in emergency medicine, and when I needed a quick reference or reminder and didn't have time to run upstairs to the library, I used this book more than any other. I think a lot of other docs in position like mine, if they're honest, would say the same. Like the previous editions, this one is well organized and well written. The first couple of chapters of the major sections are symptom-based, and then the bulk of each section is disease-based. It will be useful for generalists seeking practical information about diseases they don't see every day, and specialists looking for concise, practical information about areas of medicine outside their specialties. If you are looking for long discussions of the molecular basis of diseases and all the experiments that have been done on mice, this isn't your book. If you are looking for quick, helpful information that you can trust to help you make a decision, this is a reliable source. If you are going out into the wilderness and can take only one book, it's a good choice.I love the fact that for each condition there is a brief definition first and then gets more into details. It's concise, with all the major information without loosing you in complicated sentences. Straight forward and reliable as a source. If you don't have a degree in a medical science of some kind, this is not for you. It is not a laymans book. And it never fails to impress. It is all in all under one roof, a bit like shopping in supermarket. It also covers peds, gynae, ENT,dermatology and the rest. Highly highly recommended. How people do without it,Icannot understand.Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page.
