A progress bar will show the progress of the scan and the number of stations found during the scan will also be displayed. When the scan is complete your radio will select the first available station and begin to play. Stations are listed in numerical and then alphabetical order by default. Check that the mains power wall socket is switched on and that your radio is not in Standby mode. You may have headphones connected. Either use the headphones to listen to your radio or unplug the headphones. If you are using a Bluetooth connected device, increase the volume on the secondary device and on your radio. Touch sensitive technology is everywhere at the moment and it’s only going to get more prevalent. The top surface comes alive when brushed by a finger, illuminated by a cool blue backlight. But don’t worry, the buttons are easy to use and very responsive. The only real negative is that the smooth surface does pick up finger prints quite easily, so you’ll have to clean it at regular intervals. In fact, the display is bright and easy to read and text scrolls across at quite a pace so it’s not too much of a problem. There are actually ten presets, but you have to press a shift key to get to presets 6-10, which is a little inconvenient but not the end of the world. There are arrow keys for moving between stations and a select button for choosing what you want. Presumably, this is so you can judge how good the signal is, though I image you could get a fairly good impression of this by how the station in question sounded. There’s a handle too so you’ll have to push down the aerial if you want to lift the radio. The Bush can be powered without being tethered to a wall, as long as you’re willing to find six large R14, batteries to fit inside it, which would seem an expensive thing to do regularly. The Pure Evoke 3, seems very sluggish in comparison. Scanning for new stations the first time was very quick and moving between stations was free from lag or delay. This made it very easy to use. Next to this is a line-out for feeding to an external source and a headphone socket for private listening. However, there’s no Medium Wave or Long Wave. When in FM mode the arrows let you scan the frequencies as you would expect and the ten presets can be used and don’t overwrite your DAB ones. However, where there was DAB reception though the Bush performed very well indeed with a loud clear sound that could go seemingly quite loud for the 1.5W RMS speakers without too much distortion. At normal levels the sound was easy and clear to listen too. It is great to look, sounds good ad is easy to use but it will really have to go with your decor to make it worthwhile paying the asking price that’s twice the price of some DAB radios. Bush did manufacture a model covering short wave for the UK market. This was the AC91, which also looks like the DAC90. There is also an export model EU3A which looks like the DAC90A radio with the wave change switch on the right-hand side. This radio has a two short wave bands and aerial and earth sockets. See the photos below which were kindly sent to me by Kevin from Dublin. The four push buttons on the EU23 aren’t for preset stations as with the DAC10. They are in fact wave change switches, three short wave bands plus medium wave. If anyone can help with the service manual or other information, I’d very much appreciate it. Also, I need some help with the export model numbers. Does anyone know what the letters stand for in EBS3. The letter E presumably stands for export but what about the B and S? Please email me if you have any ideas. What does the “STANDARD” label mean which has been painted on the rear of the chassis. If anyone knows, please tell me. They differed from the UK models in ways such as mains voltage and other slight variations, but the main difference was the bands they covered. Very few countries used the long wave band, so that was omitted from export models. Medium wave was used in many countries and was included on the radios. However, due to massive electrical storms in the tropics which caused horrendous interference, many tropical radio stations used the short wave bands where the effect of such storms was far less severe. However, the radios were difficult, if not impossible, to get hold of in Great Britain. Interestingly, I’ve had emails from as far afield as South Africa and India from people who either still have or remember having these radios. If you do not press any button the TV will switch into the standby mode after a waiting period of about 5 minutes. You can highlight Yes and press OK to switch the TV into standby mode immediately.
