Claire C. 3.0 out of 5 stars It's a good resource, though it seems better suited for a full classroom with a set curriculum than a one-on-one set-up. I was surprised and slightly disappointed by how thin it was and expected more solid vocabulary lists and teaching strategies than I felt were provided. There are a lot of good reproducibles and start-up ideas, but I didn't find it to be a go to for finding words and ways to link known to new vocabulary without having to teach a full course of background subject knowledge.Don't waste your time or money on this textbook, its a joke.Arrived quickly, clean, and no smells. I’m glad to add this to my teaching texts.Item arrived in excellent condition and on time. To see what your friends thought of this book,This book is not yet featured on Listopia.http://familymn.com/images/canon-pc6re-copier-manual.pdfI was also appalled at the section on adapting the steps for ELL students, because, although I agreed with the use of native language, I felt the modifications implied a deficit, was simplistic, and in some cases conflicted with recent theories of language development. The list of words is fairly complete and well-thought out. In the elementary school, maybe. At the upper levels, I'm having a harder time envisioning how it will work. But I'm definitely going to give this a go. And the lists of academic vocabulary words are helpful! The book tied in with the building of academic vocabulary for our students. A six-step process was given for identifying vocabulary words. Review and games were a part of a program to reinforce vocabulary. The book was a short read and gave a lot of good ideas to accomplish the task. I'm still figuring out a way to build more of his practices into my regular schedule, but that's another story.I'm still figuring out a way to build more of his practices into my regular schedule, but that's another story. This book contains some black line masters, although you may create your own after practicing his procedures in your class. These two books changed the way I taught math and science content after my sixth year of teaching. Vocabulary study, when done well, is a super efficient way to study content! My students love all of his games to review vocab. I was glad it was only 72pages of text. The rest of the book includes graphic organizers and word lists. A fast read. I have used it with my MS ELA teachers to choose Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III words. A great resource for quick vocabulary games. Many practical strategies and ready to take into the classroom activities. It reinforces what I already know in some areas, but it does help with new graphic organizer ideas. It's a nice addition to my teacher resources. If you want NextDay, we can save the other items for later. Order by, and we can deliver your NextDay items by. Using the teacher's manual and vocabulary notebooks, educators can guide students in using tools and activities that will help them deepen their own understanding of critical academic vocabulary, the building blocks for achievement in each discipline. This teacher's manual provides the basic procedures for vocabulary development. One of the best resources is the vocabulary lists that are included in the appendices. They provide unlimited words for vocabulary development at multiple grade levels. The book is great to review terms that may be used on testing for all grades. However, it is more of a reference book to read about research based practices. I wouldn't read it cover to cover. Cancel Thanks, we'll look into this. All Rights Reserved. This article offers practical classroom strategies to build background knowledge such as using contrasts and comparisons and encouraging topic-focused wide reading. There is a virtual consensus that background knowledge is essential for reading comprehension. Put simply, the more you know about a topic, the easier it is to read a text, understand it, and retain the information. In the first experiment, we assessed low- and middle-SES children's background knowledge about birds by creating a task with fictional characters and names: “This is a toma. A toma is a bird. Can a toma live in a nest?” and other items in a similar format. The book had a total of 238 words and shared a common plot and story grammar, including the setting (i.e., a house), problem, response, and resolution. Using a receptive comprehension measure that examined children's understanding of critical story events and their ability to make causal inferences, we found once again that the low-SES children experienced greater difficulty comprehending the story than their middle-SES peers. Here was our reasoning: If children's preexisting background knowledge underlies these differences in comprehension, then we would expect that there would be no differences in learning among our differing SES groups. For this study, we created an 18-page illustrated storybook similar to the one we used in our previous study—with one difference: The storybook used a novel category, wugs (a pseudo-word), and was designed around the adventures of four species of wugs. And our results sustained our hypothesis about background knowledge and comprehension. Taken together, these results suggest that differences in low-SES children's comprehension skills may be attributed, in part, to limitations in their preexisting knowledge base. For example, studies have shown that individual differences in prior knowledge affect the ability to extract explicit and implicit information from text and integrate this text-based information in reading comprehension (Kintsch, 1988).Sometimes we call it domain-specific knowledge or topical knowledge. Without such knowledge, it becomes difficult to construct a meaningful mental model of what the text is about. Consider the following examples. If you were to read the word in a sports article about the Yankees, you might think about Derek Jeter recovering from his latest baseball injury. If you read the word in a math text, on the other hand, you'd think about a mathematical process like multiplication or division. Words have multiple purposes and meanings, and their meanings in particular instances are cued by the reader's domain knowledge.
