The ADC is designed to provide you with information essential to your needs. Data such as temperature, wind speed, barometric pressure, altitude and humidity are features specific to four different ADC models: Wind,. It could clog the mechanism. Mr. Alan C. Davis 5.0 out of 5 stars The altimeter and barometric functions became essential and it was always fun to hang the thing outside my tent at night to see what the temp dropped to. Loved the wind speed indicator as well. But I drowned the thing in a failed crossing of the Cascade River in New Zealand two summers ago so decided to replace it with Brunton's Nomad 3. Never came to terms with that device so I've gone back to their ADC albeit the Pro version. Yes I know modern GPS's have all the functions that the Pro does and I use a Suunto Ambit 2 as well. However for it's main functions I still prefer the ADC. It's just so easy to read and being able to monitor changes in the weather over a 24 hour period is priceless. As an aside. The battery cover has 3 little prongs that lock it in place. On my Summit two of these had broken off. I emailed Brunton about purchasing a replacement and about a week later one arrived in the post to Happy Valley, South Australia, no charge.https://kairoscourse.org/images/canon-i-sensys-4150-manual.pdfI use it to collect data during test periods, and while it's not highly accurate (i.e. you can't get it NIST certified), it does what I need it to do. The built in compass is small, but it works. So should help if you get lost, too. One downside - the temperature response is slow. You need to leave it in an area for at least 10 minutes to get a real temperature reading. But, you can watch the built in trends to see if you've leveled out yet, too, which is helpful.We returned it unit after he struggled to find out why it was persistently inaccurate. The instruction card that came with it was completely inadequate for a device of this complexity. My husband downloaded a more complete set of constructions, but even with that, he was unable to obtain accurate readings and forecasts. He is always suspicious of reviewers who are extremely negative, because many owe their problems to their own failure to read and follow directions.He tried hard not to make that mistake. Nothing seemed to work. There are offset calibration procedures for both temperature and barometric pressure. He followed both procedures, and after obtaining reasonably accurate readings, the ADC slipped back into inaccuracy with no help from me. We had a very significants storm during the time we had the device--exactly the kind of situation my husband hoped the ADC would warn him about. It failed to even hint that the storm was coming, and while heavy rains and even snow fell around us, the unit predicted partly cloudy conditions with no warning of danger. A storm like we had can be extremely dangers in our mountains. Bottom line is that this was a complete disappointment. Brunton offers to replace defective units, but given the numerous problems he had and the extremely poor documentation that comes with the ADC Pro (he couldn't even find a troubleshooting section), he had no appetite for round two.They make really fine products, and they're known for it. The ADC Pro addresses most of my needs for the outdoors. I can't figure out why the altimeter will give different readings when you're standing in the same spot for the longest time. Such as leaving the unit on my fireplace mantle until the next adventure - it should show the same elevation, but it varies a few feet. I've found the wind speed calculator to be inaccurate as well.sometimes off 10-20 compared to larger professional equipment But, overall it's a good unit and you should be able to find it for a good price on Amazon.Both of these features work very well, as well as the hygrometer. The unit shows these in real time, tracks changes and records minimum and maximum events. The only feature that doesn't work well is the altimeter. I don't know what theory or system is used but it isn't accurate, at least not on my unit. I can be sitting in the same place and watch the altitude go up and down without moving it. It's very seldom that it remains stable. Since the altimeter wasn't an important feature for me it's not a bother. The unit seems to be made well and hopefully proves to be reasonably durable, which I think it will. It's a bit pricey but I got a better deal on Amazon than I found anywhere else. All in all it's not a bad little unit.A bit difficult to use.Not as accurate as expected. For something VERY basic, I guess this would do.The cost of these is not justified when you still have to roll up your cuff in freezing conditions to read the altitude.The outer metal tab that contacts the positive plate of the button battery needs to be carefully bent outwards slightly, as it may otherwise contact the negative plate of the battery also, therefore causing a short circuit. Please ignore.Please try again. My first backpack was 40 years ago. I currently try to do one backpack trip of 1 to 5 nights every month (which can be tricky in the winter). Mostly I stay around Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, Mount Adams, Goat Rocks, and the Olympic Peninsula. In recent years I have shifted to lightweight - my pack weight without food and water is about 15 lb (7 kg). I make a lot of my own gear - silnylon tarp-tent, bivy, synthetic bag, simple bag style pack. My sleeping pad is a Therm-a-Rest air mattress.If the light button is pressed, a backlight comes on for three seconds, enabling me to see it at night. If the mode button is pressed, the display switches to wind speed mode. On the top of the instrument is the wind speed measuring propeller. It can be rotated to expose the propeller. When not measuring, it should be rotated back to protect the propeller from contamination. If the instrument is held up to the wind, the current wind speed is displayed. The maximum wind speed is also displayed. The unit in wind measurement mode. Note that the propeller at the top has been rotated open, and I just blew on it which made it rotate: To measure windspeed, I hold it up, facing into the wind: If the mode button is pressed again, the wind chill is displayed. If the mode button is pressed again, the display goes back to the default mode. The unit can display in metric or English units. To switch, go to display windchill mode and press the reset button. The unit has an alarm mode and a timer mode, but I haven't figured out how to use these. While writing this report, I read in the user manual that the propeller can also be used as a crude mechanical compass. One of the propeller vanes is red. If the unit is held horizontally, the red vane points to magnetic North. This isn't very accurate or anything, but in a pinch it might come in handy. I read on one of the comparison charts, but not in the user manual, that the unit can also measure water speed. On the back of the unit is a battery compartment that can be opened with a coin. Brunton also makes two other similar products that also measure air pressure and humidity. The unit comes with a lanyard with clip, but I immediately removed this because it weighs extra, plus I always just hold it in my hand so this isn't necessary. The listed weight is 2.4 oz (68 g) but I measured it as 1.75 oz (50 g). With the lanyard it weighs 2.0 oz ( 57 g). I've had it for about 6 months. I like the date display, because I often forget what the date is when I'm filling out a permit. I like the temperature function because it displays tenths of a degree digitally. I also have a crude bulb type thermometer, but I can only read it to a degree F (0.6 C) if I'm lucky. I like the wind speed function because I make my own tents and it's interesting to know how fast the wind is blowing for testing purposes. It was obvious to press the mode button. I never have to press the mode button more than three times to get back to the original display mode. It was obvious that the light button turns on the backlight for night viewing. To reset the maximum wind speed, it is not at all intuitive. I had to read the user manual to figure it out. Press reset for two seconds, then press set, and then press mode button for two seconds. One negative I noticed is that it takes a long time for the temperature to stabilize. If it's in my pocket or in the sun it warms up. The temperature is displayed in tenths of a degree (F or C). When I was watching the temperature change over time, I noticed that it only displayed tenths of a degree F that corresponded to a tenth of a degree C. So, the unit doesn't really give resolution of 0.1 degree F (0.06 C) but 0.18 degree F (0.1 C). Only a nerd would understand what I'm talking about so this is a non-issue, just an observation. I left the unit next to my sleeping bag numerous times, where it got splashed by rain, and it continued to function okay. Brunton says the unit is waterproof and submersible. Based on my experience, I would call it water resistant and not submersible. I opened the battery compartment to see what kind of battery it had, and closed it again, but the unit wouldn't come back to life. I found nothing in the user manual about replacing the battery. I called customer support and they weren't very helpful. I played with the unit some more, and determined that you have to really push on the battery cover when you close it to get it to work. I also noticed there are these three tabs that hold the cover closed that appeared to be cracked a little. I think this is a weakness of this unit. I replaced the unit because the buttons quit working, as I described above, and the replacement unit was the same. The lesson here is, when you open or close the battery cover, push fairly hard on it to get it to work properly, and so the three tabs don't break. It is very lightweight and small. The unit is water resistant as long as I don't fully submerge the unit for an extended period. The unit quit working when it was submerged in a puddle for an extended period of time. I’m glad they’re using a USB 3.0 port but am very curious if it can even handle the amount of data should a user initiate a really wide spectrum recording. Perhaps recordings have capped bandwidths? Note that the 32 MHz bandwidth is only available at 0-32 MHz (direct sampling). On VHF the band is 8 MHz.But I know there will be people who won’t touch a product with that number. The United States Army has adopted the Pocket Transit as the M2 Compass for use by crew-served artillery.It is used to get directional degree measurements ( azimuth ) through use of the Earth's magnetic field. Holding the compass at waist-height, the user looks down into the mirror and lines up the target, needle, and guide line that is on the mirror. Once all three are lined up and the compass is level, the reading for that azimuth can be made. Arguably the most frequent use for the Brunton in the field is the calculation of the strike and dip of geological features ( faults, contacts, foliation, sedimentary strata, etc.). Strike is measured by leveling (with the bull's eye level ) the compass along the plane being measured. Dip is taken by laying the side of the compass perpendicular to the strike measurement and rotating horizontal level until the bubble is stable and the reading has been made. If field conditions allow, additional features of the compass allow users to measure such geological attributes from a distance.Thus, measurements are sensitive to magnetic interference. For example, if the user is near an outcrop that contains magnetite or some other iron -bearing material, compass readings can be affected anywhere from several inches from the outcrop to tens of yards away (depending on the strength of the magnetic field). Its the ease and speed at which you can take them that is the key. There are apps for mobile phones that will take planar and linear data but I'm not sure of the error in these. The beauty of the mobile phone programs is that they plot stereo nets for you as you take the measurements. The issue is, however, that people rapidly forget how to interpret or check their data - using a manual compass and drawing summary stereo nets in your notebook may seem old-school but at least it makes you check and think about your data. For me the Brunton Geo compass is the best. It has a nice internal clino with accurate gradation and levelling bubble. The hinge has the same graduation as a Freiberg. The needle is relatively well damped. It also has a mirror and siting attachment that make it good for measuring lineations. It is slightly cheaper than the Freiberg. This was from a local supplier. You should be able to source it cheaper off the net, or from the manufacturers - The Brunton Co., Riverton, Wyoming, USA. It has a high pricetag but is worth every dollar spent on it.
