This printer has a Class 3B laser diode which produces invisible laser radiation in the scanner unit. You should not open the scanner unit under any circumstances. In case of an emergency, you must disconnect the power cord from the power outlet to shut off the power completely. If the replacement plug needs a fuse, fit the same fuse as the original. The names for the paper trays in the printer driver and this Guide are as follows:. Caution Do not use ink jet paper, or it may cause a paper jam and damage your printer. To help you choose which paper to use with this printer, see Important information for choosing your paper in the Appendix. Select the Paper Size, Media Type, Paper Source, and other settings in the printer driver. Media Type: Plain Paper Paper Source: Tray1. Hold the paper in this position until the printer automatically feeds the paper in for a short distance, and then let go of the paper. After the printed page comes out of the printer, put in the next sheet of paper as in Step 5 above. Repeat for each page that you want to print. Media Type: Thick paper or Thicker paper Paper Source: MP Tray. Open the MP tray and lower it gently. You should buy quality envelopes from a supplier who understands that you will be using the envelopes in a laser printer. Before you print a lot of envelopes, test one to make sure that the print results are what you want. Use this paper feed and output method when you want to print envelopes. A NO PAPER status is shown by the control panel LEDs until you put a sheet of paper in the manual feed tray. Open the manual feed tray. Slide the paper guides to fit the envelope size. When you have finished printing your envelopes, close the back output tray to reset the two blue tabs back to their original position. After the printed envelope comes out of the printer, the printer will wait until you put in the next envelope. Repeat Step 5 for each envelope you want to print. Use this paper feed and output method when you want to print envelopes. Open the MP tray and lower it gently. Pull out the MP tray support flap. When you have finished printing your envelopes, close the back output tray to reset the two blue tabs back to their original position. If envelopes get smudged during printing, in the printer driver select MP Tray as the Paper Source for a straight paper path. Then, set the Media Type to Thick Paper or Thicker Paper to increase the fixing temperature. Illustrations in this section are based on HL-5050 and HL-5070N. Hold the transparency in this position until the printer automatically feeds it in for a short distance, and then let go of the transparency. If you put any Media (paper, transparency and so on) in the manual feed tray before the printer is in the Ready state, the media may be ejected without being printed on. Select the Paper Size, Media Type, Paper Source, and other settings in the printer driver. Send the print data to the printer. You can change the Layout setting by selecting the setting in the Orientation, Page Order and Page Per Sheet. Brother Laser driver PS driver DRIVER AND SOFTWARE 2 - 16. Then, each user just clicks that file to have the printer driver, port driver, IP address, and so on, automatically copied to their PC. This printer has an Automatic Emulation Selection feature. When the printer receives data from the computer, it automatically chooses the emulation mode. This feature has been set at the factory to ON. If the Status LED is on for a long time and nothing has printed, press the Go button to print the remaining data. Toner Drum Paper Status. See Paper jams and how to clear them in Chapter 6. If the printer does not start printing, press the Go button. No paper Put paper in the printer. See Printing on plain paper in Chapter 1. Then press the Go button. Misfeed Put the paper back in properly, and then press the Go button. If you see the service call indication above, follow the steps below: Take out the DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) from your printer, if you have a DIMM installed. Make sure that the front cover is fully closed before you report a service call. Wake-up If the printer is in Sleep mode, press the Go or Job Cancel button to wake the printer up and go to the Ready state. Form feed If the yellow Status LED is on, press the Go button. Using control panel button Turn off the printer. Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in. Using the control panel button Make sure that the front cover is closed and the power cord is plugged in. Turn on the printer and wait until the printer is in Ready state. When the Drum LED comes on, release the Go button. The printer will print a list of the internal fonts. Using the printer driver (For HL-5040, HL-5050 and HL-5070N) If you are using Brother’s Windows. When the Status LED comes on, release the Go button. When all the LEDs light up again, the printer will start warming up. The print server has been reset to its default factory settings. For HL-5040 This printer has 8 MB of standard memory and a slot for optional additional memory. Caution Make sure you turn the printer OFF before you install or remove the DIMM. Remove the side cover. Use a coin to loosen the two screws, and then remove the metal plate. See Printer Settings and Print fonts in Chapter 3. To install the lower tray unit, please see the instructions supplied with the lower tray unit. 4 - 4 OPTIONS. Wait to unpack the toner cartridge until immediately before you install it in the printer. Toner Low message The Toner LED alternates turning on for 2 seconds and off for 3 seconds. Replacing the toner cartridge To make sure you get high quality print, make sure you use quality toner cartridges. When you want to buy toner cartridges, call the dealer you bought the printer from. To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, do not touch the electrodes shown in Figure 5-4. Brother strongly recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridge provided with your printer. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Do not touch the shaded parts shown in Figure 5-9 and Figure 5-10 to prevent any degradation to the print quality. Figure 5-9 Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe. Put the drum unit assembly back in the printer. Close the front cover of the printer. 5 - 7 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. The printer should be used only in a clean, dust-free environment with adequate ventilation. See Cleaning in this chapter. Follow these steps to replace the drum unit. Exposure to direct sunlight or room light may damage the drum unit. Put the toner cartridge in the new drum unit until you hear it lock into place with a click. If you put the cartridge in properly, the blue lock lever is lifted automatically. Make sure that the printer is turned on, the front cover is open and the Status LED is red. Reset the drum counter. See the instructions supplied with the new drum unit. When you replace the toner cartridge or the drum unit, make sure you clean the inside of the printer. If printed pages are stained with toner, clean the inside of the printer with a dry soft cloth. You should replace the units listed below after printing the following number of pages.All of the protective parts have been removed. The toner cartridge and drum unit are installed properly. The front cover is fully closed. If it is empty, put a new stack of paper in the paper tray. For HL-5030 and HL-5040, put paper in the paper tray and then press the Go button. Take the corrective actions for the error message. Error message MEMORY FULL PRINT OVERRUN RESOLUTION REDUCED TO ENABLE PRINTING (The printer has printed the. Instead, pull the edge of the jammed paper from the paper tray. Print a few copies of the test page until the scattering of toner stops. Press the Job Cancel button if you want to delete the data left in the printer. Though most plain paper for copying is long grain, some is short grain. We recommend that you use long grain paper for this printer. Short grain paper is too weak for the paper carriage of the printer. It is one of the important characteristics of the paper. This can change greatly depending on the storage environment, although usually paper contains about 5 water by weight. Because paper often absorbs water, the amount of water can sometimes be about 10 in a high humidity environment. So, I finally decided it was time to get a new printer. I chose this printer because it is well supported under linux, prints very fast at 17 pages per minute, has a fast first print time (under 10 seconds) and unlike the HL-1440 comes with 8MB of memory for printing larger files. It's also PCL6 compatible so it will work with just about any operating system. I had this printer out of the box, plugged in, configured and printing a PDF file in less then 20 minutes. It's also dead silent when not printing. The only problems I've noticed is that fields of solid black appear to have nearly invisible faint gray lines, and text could be printed a bit darker. The printer likes the paper in the secondary tray to be nice and straight. If the pages are curled even a little, the printer folds the paper and sometimes jams. It's not hard to remove the jams though. If the print job runs out of paper, adding more will auto resume the printing process. Nice! A couple of days ago the printer light turned red indicating that one of the covers was open. Since that was not the case, I went online to see if anyone else had this problem. According to Brother, you have to preform a series of actions to correct the error. I tried several times with no luck. Now I am looking at a giant paper weight with a red light. Being 2 years old, I am surprised that this printer is still better featured than most current printers. The memory, network connectivity, and speed are all benefits that other printers have costing twice as much. This printer also plays nice with Linux machines. It's been nice Brother. I chose the Brother HL 5040. So far I can't say enough about the printer the quality is far superior than that of a bubble jet. The speed is lightning fast and when compared to the high-end Hp's you find in a lot of office settings you would never be able to tell the difference. I ended up printing out wedding invitations and envelopes. It printed the outer envelopes, inner envelopes, and RSVP envelopes as well as the card stock for the invitation cards, maps, and RSVP cards for 120 invitations. It was easy to feed them through the manual feeder. I had to do it one at a time, but if you're on a budget, it beats paying for it to be professionally done (and hopefully, I'll only have to do it once in my life). It's also a very speedy printer and so manually feeding the hungry Brother was relatively painless. There was a tendency for envelopes to curl when they came out. It wasn't a problem after they had been stuffed.
