The Brother MFC has a Distinctive Ring feature that allows you to use your MFC to take full advantage of the telephone company’s Distinctive Ring service. The new phone number on your line can just receive faxes. Some ring patterns cannot be registered. The ring patterns below are supported by your Brother MFC. Register the one your telephone company gives you. Ring. After you have set the Distinctive Ring feature to ON, the receive mode is set to Manual automatically. Unless you have a TAD or Voice Mail set up on the Distinctive Ring number, Manual mode means you must answer all the calls yourself. This service displays the telephone number, or name if it is available, of your caller as the line rings. After a few rings, the LCD shows the telephone number of your caller (and name, if available). When the thirty-first call comes in, information about the first call is erased. You can scroll through Caller ID information to review those calls made to your MFC. When you press the Fax Receive Code, the MFC starts to receive a fax. If you let the MFC answer first, you will have to go to the MFC so you can press call to the cordless handset. Connect the telephone line cord to the jack labeled EXT.However, when you have an external TAD on the same telephone line as the MFC, the TAD answers all calls and the MFC “listens” for fax calling (CNG) tones.https://snabavto.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/163479c1738e87---daewoo-espero-english-service-manual.pdf Your MFC cannot work properly if you plug the TAD into a wall jack (unless you are using Distinctive Ring). Plug the telephone line cord from the telephone wall jack into the back of the MFC, in the jack labeled LINE. The calls are usually passed down or “rolled over” to the next available phone line in a preset order. The first two ways may require assistance from the telephone company. You can change the wall outlets from one RJ14 jack to two RJ11 jacks. Or, you can have an RJ11 wall outlet installed and slave or jump one of the phone numbers to it. The most common connection is to put the MFC on Line 2, which is explained in the following steps. While it is often relatively simple to connect the MFC to a key system or a PBX (Private Branch Exchange), we suggest that you contact the company that installed your telephone system and ask them to connect the MFC for you. There is a network function I haven't had the chance to use, but I hope to eventually and I will update this review when I do. As for the ink issue, yes it does use up ink even when not printing. It does this when doing its automated cleaning function. I have to say, I've had printers that clog up when not in use, so I think it's fine that this printer cleans itself occasionally to maintain its function. If it takes a little ink to do so, then that's a price I'm willing to pay. Better than not being able to print when I need it. The issue of the printer not functioning when one color is out is valid. However, I keep that from being a problem by always having extra ink available. They are not that expensive. Overall a quality product and a great buy. It did everything and worked over the network. I shared it with four computers. The auto feeder was great too, capable of handling up to 10 pages to fax, copy, or scan. It also handled third-party ink cartridges with only one minor problem -- the black ink needs to be periodically cleaned using the auto clean function. This little machine worked as a nice color copier, color fax machine, color printer, and color scanner. I Had Only One Paper Jam with This Machine. Now for the Bad News: after a year and three months of occational usage, the printhead belt broke. At first, the printer told me I had a paper jam. I checked and did not find one. I turned the printer off and back on. This time it tried to perform ink cleaning. This step failed, and it asked me to check the manual. I opened the printer to where to ink cartridges are and found a loose printhead belt sticking out. It is too bad that such a great machine was built with a lousy belt. Now I have to look for a replacement. Please try again later. Amazon Customer 4.0 out of 5 stars After all, I had a perfectly good scanner and printer working at the time. After I got the machine, my husband has been using it for all his photocopying needs. Overall a quality product and a great buy. Please try again later. Please try again later. R. Bennett 4.0 out of 5 stars I've printed about 1900 pages, faxed and scanned dozens. I'd like to contradict points other reviews have made: 1) ink cartridges--I've used generics I got from e-bay as well as Brother. No problems recognizing them or running out more quickly than I thought. 2) paper jams--never had it jam except on card stock. Also several different brands of photo paper have done just fine. 3) constant cleaning cycle--never heard it perform cleaning outside of replacing a cartridge, and it sits just opposite my bedroom. I would hear it. Some other points: 1) it isn't as fast as advertised, at least not over 100Mb network. There is no way I could get 20 pages per minute out of it. Maybe 5-7. Maybe it is faster over USB, but data throughput shouldn't be the limiting factor with plain text files. 2) doesn't handle cardstock at all in the printer. 3) photo quality is just average. 4) every once in a while it will lock up when I try to use the scanner from a computer. But I can scan to a media card and then grab the file from the card. So it never stops me, its just annoying. Updated firmware doesn't solve this problem. Overall I'm pleased with the printer, especially considering the cost to feature ratio. Please try again later. Please try again later. The Analyst 2.0 out of 5 stars It did everything and worked over the network. Now I have to look for a replacement. Please try again later. Please try again later.Called tech support in case I was doing something wrong. They confirmed unit was defective and offered to ship another one immediately and I could Fedex back the defective unit. It all sounded so easy and it was, however the unit I was shipped, appeared to be refurbished.it came in a plain cardboard box totally unlike a new one and there were no advertising stickers on the unit like a new one has. So did I pay full retail price for a refurbished unit. The second unit did work but after trying the scanner I was not impressed with the quality. I told them them this item is less than a week old but the retailer will not return it because Brother sent me what looks like a refurbished unit in a plain cardboard box. I told Brother that I would like to get another one of THEIR units which has a better scanner which is the same price. They said they won't do it!!! They only swap defective models for the same model number! Now think.Do you really want to purchase a product from a company like this. I'm going to take a hammer to this unit. Rest assured I will not buy another Brother product. Do you want to be stuck with an item you don't want? Please try again later. Please try again later. TwirlyGirly Top Contributor: Cooking 5.0 out of 5 stars The first test print showed black and cyan okay, with two short bars missing from both yellow and magenta. On the third run, all printed perfectly. To test the print quality, I grabbed a picture I had colored when playing with my daughter. It is quite detailed, and colored with Prisamacolor artist's pencils - I thought it would be a good test picture because I had used a lot of different colors, and incorporated shading and blending techniques into the work. The resulting copy was indistinguishable from the original - the colors reproduced exactly. All in all, I think the Brother MFC-420CN is an excellent value for the money, and I would recommend it without reservations for home use. Update: I (finally) got the correct cable to connect the MFC-420CN to my PC, and the installation of both the hardware and software were simple and easy. A week and a half ago, I was printing some Valentine's Day cards, and decided to print some matching envelopes, too. The envelope design completely covered the front of the envelope with a background color, and there was a bar of graphics on the far left end. I called Brother customer service (toll free!) and was pleasantly surprised to discover Brother DOES NOT outsource its calls overseas, as so many companies do these days. The customer service rep was knowledgable about the product, and working together we tried several adjustments - to no avail. The rep finally decided the printer itself was faulty, and offered to replace it entirely - via FedEx. How refreshing to deal with a company that provides exemplary customer service, and seeks to resolve issues quickly. Please try again later. Please try again later. Dharma Bum 4.0 out of 5 stars Nobody else (not HP, not Canon, not Epson) makes an all-in-one in this price range that includes networking. The machine prints photos and scans slowly at high resolutions. But I expected that. Get a true photo inkjet if you print alot of photos. Photo printing, copying and scanning capabilities are adequate for home use and school projects. It has already saved me two trips to Kinkos. I gave the MFC-420CN 4 stars instead of 5 only because I needed to download drivers for the ibook and for windows 2003 server. The mac drivers on the CD that came with the printer would frequently print pages in mirror image, a problem the downloaded driver fixed. The CD drivers also does not support Windows 2003 Server. The MFC-420CN only supports printing (not scanning) for Windows 2003 Server. It is also wonderfully compact in design. Please try again later. Please try again later. J. Whitman 5.0 out of 5 stars The only issue Ive had is the INK. It tears through INK like crazy. If it sits while turned on, every day it will go through and clean the ink cartridge. Wasteing more ink. Had to start leaving it unplugged just so it would stop cleaning the ink every night. Also it will STOP Printing at about 20 ink left. It will tell you it needs to be replaced. Found a trick to get around that by taking a black sharpy marker and blacking out the ink levels on the cartridge. Now it thinks its always 100 full and uses it till its gone.
