Brother 2170W Troubleshooting Manual [Unlimited EBook]Setting Up the Machine Installing the Printer Driver Setup is Complete. How to use the printer, see the User’s Guide on the CD-ROM. Caution Cautions specify procedures you must follow or avoid to prevent possible damage to the printer or other objects. Doing this might cause an electrical shock. After you have just used the printer, some internal parts of the printer will be extremely hot. DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration when you open the front or back cover of the printer. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock. Refer to the User's Guide for how to clean the machine. The label shown below is attached in countries where it is needed.Rock it from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the assembly. Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly into the printer. Close the front cover of the printer. While pressing the green paper-guide release lever, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are using. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots. Make sure that the printer power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the printer. Plug the AC power cord into an AC power outlet. Turn on the printer power switch. Click Install Printer Driver on the menu screen. Note Choose the Install Printer Driver icon for your region. Setup is now complete. Note XML Paper Specification Printer Driver. Although Brother HL-2170W can be used in a both wired and wireless network, only one of the connection methods can be used at a time. Click Install Printer Driver on the menu screen. Chad R. Thomas 4.0 out of 5 stars I found it very easy to configure for both wired and wireless networks, although I use mine on a wired connection out of convenience. I print mostly plain text, and the quality is very good. I have but two complaints: First, the paper comes out slightly curled, but this is a fact of life for a printer this size. Second, Brother has programmed the printer such that when its thinks the toner is empty, it stops working. This happened to me when I was printing some important documents. I did some internet searches and examined the toner cartridge. There is a clear plastic circle at each end of the toner cartridge. The printer shines a light through to see how full the toner is. Simply cover one of them with a piece of opaque tape, and the printer will think that the toner is full.Been using heavily for 8 years now, and it still works fantastic. Hasn't ever needed a repair despite heavy use. As a grad student now, I especially print A LOT. I don't use the wireless feature, although I did use bluetooth once in a pinch. I replace the toner maybe twice a year, with low lost recycled toner. Almost always print double-sided.I've owned this printer for years. First wireless setup was a breeze on a Mac using recommended method. Moved and called Brother for instructions because the manual instructions no longer worked for wireless. After moving again I spent hours on the phone with tech support for my internet provider without successful wireless setup. Moved again and called Brother to see if I could get those same instructions that worked before. The tech support person was extremely helpful considering the warranty has long since expired but was unsuccessful in wireless setup.This one worked fine as a network printer, but now under Win 10 it has to be reset with almost every use. I will keep it until this toner cartridge runs out. Then donate to GoodWill Industries. But, it you have any pre Win 10 operating system including Linux it will work fine without constant attention. Brother still provides excellent online support.Emails to tech support initially went unanswered. I finally called tech support (thinking it would be a waste of time) but they were incredibly helpful --- I was only on hold for a few moments. We got disconnected but the Brother tech support guy called me back ---- twice. Now it works perfectly and the USB cable has already been sold on eBay. The print jobs have been excellent --- very clear and crisp. The printer itself is compact with no extending paper trays. I'm very impressed with this printer and with Brother tech support. Highly recommend this wireless printer.This little printer has been mightily used. I work from home for several companies and I have worked this little guy hard. True, it is a dedicated printer and doesn't have the ability to fax or copy, but I have never had the slightest difficulty getting it to print. It does exactly what it was designed to do - print. Paper jams are rare if the printer is used properly and on the occasion, one does encounter a paper jam, it is easy to unjam. There is a separate slide-through compartment to place individual sheets such as when printing labels so that the sheets don't get jammed in the printer. You may also use this separate slide-through compartment to print other, thicker pieces of paper. I do stock transfers and will, on occasion, use the slide-through compartment for certificates, however, most of the time, the printer has no difficulty accepting the certificate paper when placed in the main tray and the certificates come out great. I use Windows 7 and my computer and printer are hardwired, although I have used the wireless feature and had no difficulties when using it wireless.
