I know there are more modern wireless systems for music throughout the house, etc. But we still have these ugly units in the walls.http://seasailing.us/node/2241 Rather than paying someone to take these out and patch up walls (including many with wallpaper), would it not make more sense to get intercom replacements that will go into the existing holes. I think from a labor standpoint it might even be cheaper, since little or no wall repair would be needed. I would very much appreciate any advice I can get on this. I used a 24V DC to 5V DC step down converter to power the units. Patch the wall (With a 5 x 7 access panel). Intercom system just can't compete anymore. Broken central vacuum outlets. Q Comments (57) you could remove the doors off your little island and see if you can get a micro to fit in there (you'll have to go with a counter microwave that is also built-in capable. I have an OTR one and ended up putting it in below my oven. I had my cabs painted so they were able to modify this cabinet for me by removing two of the drawers and making a large opening for the built-in.Those recirculating micros are absolute garbage, even worse for venting than the regular OTR microwaves. I had ours up above that for 15 years (And i have an actual ducted vent!https://cjb-clinicalmarketing.com/images/canadian-solar-home-design-manual.pdf) and you should have seen all of the grease and gunk that got trapped in that thing. How would that work, what would it cost. I am a DIY'er but often need advice on lighting, color, etc. Sometimes I finish a room and can't figure out why it still isn't working for me, but trained eyes might spot the problem easily..See More What would you change about this kitchen. Looking for DIY advice. Q Comments (10) Really would depend on my budget and what would bug me the most about the space. I love RL's idea of open shelving on the brick wall and would also consider taking out the small shelving. I'd start by optimizing the lighting if budget permits. It's annoying to work in a kitchen without enough lighting. If recessed lighting isn't in the cards right now, another option is under cabinet lighting. I like pairing wood and white and wouldn't be tempted to change the white appliances. (I'm not partial to stainless appliances either so that's my bias.) I think I'd play with adding black, charcoal and red or soft green (in decor) to this space. Really depends on the look and feel I'd want. I might even consider painting the cabinets or the island if I had the energy and the material was easy to paint (can't tell from pictures). These are the changes I'd contemplate, in no particular order: -new sheet vinyl flooring in a light colour -new window treatments (I'm not fond of blinds and think curtains could add softness and colour to the space) -new laminate counter (I'd consider a concrete look) -new stools if uncomfortable (I'd probably simply paint these if they were comfortable) -take out scallop trim over window -replace calendar with art -change cabinet hardware What's your budget and DIY energy level for this space?.See More Joseph Misita last year last modified: last year I need wiering I pulled the master station and put a 24v power supplyy in that hole.https://www.helpfulhunks.com.au/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/16344cc8875604---d200-battery-grip-manual.pdf I'm putting small step down buc transformers on each intercom to provide 5v ( 2nd generationecho dot ) or 12v ( 3rd generation dot and echo spot ) to the devices. I used a 3d printer to make the wall mounts. So far I've installed one Echo Spot and one 3rd generation Echo Dot. Still figuring out what will go where the master unit was. Probably a tablet of some sort, mounted on a wood frame. Just 6 more rooms to go:) Bravo you’ve done a great job When I figure in the cost of the filament, shipping costs, the time it takes to drive to the post office, etc.The 6 wire cable already in the wall is sufficiently rated to power USB, so I: This mounts flush to the wall vertically or horizontally. You can find cheaper mounts on Amazon. I just wanted something that was flush and well-constructed so that I could use it over time. I used the Air 1 because it is the same size as later generations of the iPad, so it is an easy drop-in replacement if I want to upgrade in a few years. Each station took me about 20 minutes to install start to finish (removing the old station, cutting a bigger hole in the drywall, installing the power and the mount, powering up the iPad). Here's the rough cut hole withthe drywall saw. I cleaned up the opening with a utility knife and rounded file: I used the less expensive version that requires a suction cup to remove the iPad, since I didn't intend to have these come out: When I began this thread nearly three years ago (!!), I never imagined the kinds of creative solutions that would emerge. I am simply not handy enough to follow through on most of this, and when we had our kitchen done over earlier this year, I simply had the master box removed and the hole plastered over. The other boxes are still there, awaiting piecemeal removal as rooms get refreshed. But if I were a handier sort, I have to say that this latest solution is the most impressive I've seen and I'd want to emulate it. Thanks.www.drussoarts.com/userfiles/files/Diagram-Repair-Manual.pdf I really think this particular type of project is within most people's reach. That's part of why I wanted to share. One of my goals was to do this with all off-the-shelf products with no modifications to keep it within the realm of the semi-handy. I couldn't find any examples online, and this thread was the closest to it! The jacket of the wire will tell you its rating. Most Cat 3 22-26 AWG 6-wire cable installed in the last 25-30 years will probably be fine if the cable it still in good shape. Even in my system, each iPad isn't pulling more than 1-2 amps at most and never all at the same time (even though I engineered for that). This kept me well within spec for this type of cabling. With this system design above, you should have plenty of overhead for 8-10 stations. I had no cable loss issues, either. Even on my longest cable runs to the second floor, I still had a solid 12-12.1 V at the step down converter. Older 4-wire systems should be o.k. to reuse, particularly with something like the Echo Dot that pulls Love what you’ve done. In the early 80’s, when we built our former home, we actually installed one of those Nutone systems. This was before the days of nannycams, our kids were small, and the master was on the first floor while they were on the second. With an eye toward the day when they would be home alone but still needed to be cautious about who was at the door, we also installed one by our back door and in our kitchen, away from where someone at the door could see who was answering. It served us well for many years.altho it was also considered the very best walkie-talkie but the neighborhood boys for quite a few years:). That will have to be a separate comment or thread because I didn't take pictures. I did run new wire for the Ring Elite, since it requires actual Ethernet plus PoE. Also do you have pics or step by step instruction on how you installed the meanwell supply with fuses and terminal blocks?https://recamonde.com.br/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/16344cce1e8e4a---d200-camera-manual.pdf We're talking about very low power here, so if the wire is in good shape, I would guess it would, but double check with an electrician who knows local code and can put eyeballs on it if you have concerns. The leads are all labeled. The AC is standard. Nothing special required there. On the left side, I put each of the wires coming from the stations (positive or negative, as the case may be), with the inline fuses. On the right side of each block, I connected the leads from the power supply with jumper wires (my supply has 3 leads). On the right side of the blocks, it worked like: pin 1: first lead from supply; pin 2: jumper from pin 1; pin 3: jumper from pin 2; pin 4: second lead from supply, pin 5: jumper from pin 4, etc. It's the same on the positive block and negative block, just different colored wires from your pair. I have 8 total stations connected, so I balanced the number of connections across each lead of the 3 leads on my power supply. You wouldn't necessarily even have to do that. It's not like the iPads load that supply significantly. I love having the radio on in whichever room I'm in.I think these would only help increase interest in purchasing my home when I decide to sell. Also, I have Cat 5 cable - do you think that would be adequate to power an iPad using a USB converter? My warning was more for folks who had older intercom systems with Cat 3 or other wiring behind them. This is really helpful. Looks like ebay May be the way to go. I found out today that I don’t have any Cat 5 running behind my NuTone. Will the existing NuTone Power cables be adequate to power the iPad. If necessary I can figure out a way to run the ethernet to the iPad.Do you know if you have a six wire system? The iPad will still connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi like normal. I wish I had your knowledge Doug. Thank you for the inspiration.I was able to confirm it’s a 6 wire system - at least that’s my understanding based on the pic. Is that right?https://www.yoursurveysurveyors.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/16344ccfb93883---d2-16nd3-2-manual.pdf If so, im guessing that’s a good thing? That is a good thing. You should be just fine running USB power over that wire. Thanks for your input. I plan on replacing everything in a month or two. I’ll post once finished or if I have any other questions. I tried connecting just two wires to a 12 volt transformer at the main station and it tested at 12.8 volt and it was the same at a station about 40 feet away, some stations are double that distance. What in your opinion is the best way to power the multiple stations with 12 volt power, something that is not to bulky and fits inside the main station cavity I put a 24VDC transformer in the wall where the master unit was and put small step down buck converters on the back of the boxes that I put in the wall for the echo dots. I don't think that using multiple wires buys you much, if anything, as there's not much current. Can all the 8 positive and 8 negative wires be connected to the output wires-of the transformer or is there a better way to do it? You just want a supply that is rated for the number of stations you will power. In your case, check the physical dimensions to make sure it fits in whatever opening you have. I was fortunate in that my original power supply was in the basement, so I didn’t have a space issue to worry about. I used this 24v transformer ( ), with these buck converters ( ) for qty 5 3rd gen echo Dots and 1 echo Spot with no problems ( and zero voltage loss:). The Dots are only 15w each, so the 240w transformer is way more than sufficient to my requirements. The 2 printed parts, a 3rd gen echo dot, 2mm machine screws, step down buck convertor and power cable, in other words, everything that goes in the wall for a remote station: I’m trying to figure out what to do with an old NuTone 6” x 8” speaker. Love what y’all have done but don’t have 3D printing capability.Would love to put an Alexa or Google Home in its place. It’s brick so don’t really wanna make the hole larger. Thanks!!www.drpaullampl.com/userfiles/files/Digital-Communications-Fundamentals-And-Applications-2Nd-Edition-Solutions-Manual.pdf If you have the same you can use it to mount a Echo dot 3rd generation like I've shown above, remove the station and remove the speaker, cut away the magnet and round, file and bend back the remaining four tabs and you'll have a perfect mount for the dot 3, remount the speaker base to the station and you are done. The power supply that you linked to should work, as would this. This one might possibly work,, but you would need to do the math. ( I think that 3rd gen dots are 15w each, and if it were me, I'd size about 20 over.) I don't have a Ring, but my video doorbell had a similar power requirement, and I used the chimes and transformer from the original master station for my video doorbell. He already had a dot. I’m doing 7 more and some will be dots and some will be shows. Marc from one of the first posts made this really simple. His instructions are exact and easy to follow. The small buck converters don’t work. Not strong enough to play sound at all. Went back and replaced with 5v converter adapter and it’s a easy fix. Can’t wait to finish the rest. Good information and wonderful discussion. The older generation two dots where 5 v, is that what you have in your sons room?Marc was powering older units, if you use a 12 v power supply and with 8 units you need a 12 or 15 amp one as each unit draws 1.25 amps you don't need any converters for the newer units, i live in Canada and amazon.ca had this: By Mike Elgan New technologies hope to unify the lawless frontier of home-automation products.
