He wanted to manufacture the ultimate chronograph, not one targeted at a single industry; as if to hammer his intentions home, he spent the 1940s making watches that had nothing to do with aviation. Chronomat: chronograph for mathematics. Pressure from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association to create a specialised version of the Chronomat forced Willy to finally give in, and so he recruited mathematician Marcel Robert and the AOPA to help him convert the Chronomat’s bezel to aid navigation. His new watch, the navigation timer, or Navitimer, was announced in 1952. But how on Earth does it work? Given how unlikely it is that you’ve used a slide rule before, it’ll help to explain a few quirks of the process first. That’s not wrong. This means they are zeroed for different scales, serving as a reference point in the alignment of the rule. The slide rule pays no heed to decimal places, and that means finding the number closest to the one you want regardless of where the decimal point sits. If you want 180 on the slide, for example, you’ll use 18, and if your answer reads 32.5, as another example, and you know it should be in the hundreds, you’ll read it as 325 instead. Say you want to try your hand at some multiplication, 9 multiplied by 12, for example, here’s how you do it: align the unit index 10 on the outer scale—the reference for this calculation—to 9 on the inner. Now the scale is aligned to all multiplications of 9. All you need to do next is find 12—the number you want to multiply by 9—on the outer scale and read the answer from there: 10.8, which we know should be 108. For 15 divided by 12, say, we move 12 on the outer scale to 15 on the inner scale, then read the answer from the outer unit index 10: 12.5, which we know should be 1.25. Then, opposite 210 minutes on inner scale on the mobile scale read 41 gallons. Required: Time. A pilot climbs to 7400 feet above his starting point at the average rate of 500 feet per minute. How long will this require. Opposite 7400 on the mobile scale, read answer, 14.8 minutes on the fixed scale. The methos used in examples 4 and 5 should be used. His average true air speed is 120 miles per hour and he is aided by a tail wind of 20 miles per hour. Opposite 14.8 minutes (computed from example 7) on fixed scale read 34.5 miles on mobile scale. The conversion from statute to nautical or nautical to statute miles is read directly on the mobile scale. Required: Nautical miles. Required: Kilometers. Few companies make logarithmic scales a feature of their watches. Certainly the best-known and a specialist in the field is Breitling, with the Chronomat and later the Navitimer, although it doesn’t have exclusive claim on this function. A quick survey reveals that the majority of watch-wearers whose timepiece has such a function, be it a Breitling slide rule or an E6-B type, never use it for the simple reason they can’t remember how. These days, we’re not so handy with a slide rule, hence the need for a quick refresher course on logarithmic calculation before taking a closer look at the instrument itself, and what it can be used for. The circular slide rule has a mobile scale (on a watch, this is on the bidirectional bezel), and a second, fixed scale (on the dial), each with its own graduations. Together they can be used to perform simple mathematical calculations such as multiplications, divisions, conversions and “rule of three” cross-multiplications. Multiplications Multiplications: Look for the transferred red 10 on the fixed scale (between the markers for 2 and 3 o’clock). This is the reference for multiplications. Position one of the two numbers you want to multiply opposite it. For example, to multiply 9 by 8, rotate the mobile scale until the 9 aligns with the red 10, and read off the result from under the 8 on the fixed scale. That’s 72. With that clear, to divide (for example) 30 by 4, set 30 on the outer scale opposite 4 on the inner scale. All that remains is to read off the result opposite the red 10 on the fixed scale. The same method can be used to divide larger or smaller numbers, by adding or subtracting 0. For example, if your dividend is 154, you should align 15.4 on the outer scale with whatever your divisor is on the inner scale. Once again, the result will be opposite the red 10, between 2 and 3 o’clock on the dial. Richard Mille RM 039 Aviation Speed and distance: Units of measure and distance are a common feature of the logarithmic scales used by Breitling, or the E6-B slide rule familiar to pilots. The one specificity of the Richard Mille RM 039 over other pilot watches is the capacity to calculate altitude and air density by way of a moveable indicator in the case band at 2 o’clock. The rotating scale (bezel) also serves to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit. Currency and temperature conversions: The first thing you will need to know before converting currencies using the slide rule on a Breitling Navitimer is the current exchange rate. The inner scale corresponds to euros and the outer scale to Swiss francs, with equivalent amounts in each currency opposite each other on these two scales. The method is the same for every currency, again provided the exchange rate is known. The rotating scale (bezel) also serves to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit. This done, line up 5 (50 on the rotating bezel) with 9 on the fixed scale. Now look on the fixed scale for the number you obtained after subtracting 32. The number opposite this is the equivalent in degrees Fahrenheit. Fuel consumption In-flight uses: The logarithmic scale that Breitling developed for its Navitimer in 1952 was intended first and foremost for pilots, and so it makes sense to look at the various flight-related calculations that it can be used for. Fuel consumption: This calculation requires the pilot to know at least two of three variables: the amount of fuel, time, hourly fuel consumption. Imagine the pilot is flying a plane that burns 22 litres of fuel per hour, and that the flight will last 4 hours or 240 minutes. To calculate fuel consumption, position 22 (litres) opposite the hour marker at 12 and read off the figure at 240 minutes (24), which is 88 (litres). Rate of climb or descent Rate of climb or descent: Again, the pilot needs to know at least two of three variables: altitude, time, rate of descent or climb. If, for example, the plane is climbing to 8,500 feet at an average of 600 feet per minute, to calculate time (how long it will take to reach the required altitude), the pilot aligns 600 (60) on the bezel with the red 10 on the fixed scale. The result is given opposite the number that corresponds to the final altitude (85 for 8,500), i.e. 14.10 minutes. Distance of climb or descent Distance of climb or descent: The pilot needs to know at least two of three variables: distance flown, time, rate of climb or descent. Supposing that the plane is travelling at 140 mph and that it reaches its altitude in 14.10 minutes, it has covered 33.1 nautical miles. To calculate this, set 140 (14) opposite MPH at noon. The result, 33.1 nautical miles, is shown opposite 14.10 (for the number of minutes), on the mobile scale. Rule of three Rule of three: Breitling’s slide rule will also perform a type of cross-multiplication known as the “rule of three” in a single operation. He doesn’t have the cash, and wants to know how much 7 bottles would cost him. He takes his Navitimer and positions 70 on the mobile scale opposite 12 on the fixed scale. Before it made itself an essential piece of a pilot’s toolbox, it made dashboard clocks for planes and military chronographs. But none of these are as famous as the Navitimer. Its design hasn’t lost that wow factor despite being in its sixties and, although it’s been around for a while, that aforementioned slide rule makes it a bit of a connoisseur’s choice because unless you read the manual (or our cheat sheet below) or if you’re a pilot, very few people know how to operate it properly. Despite having one of the busiest watch dials out there and a not-small case size, the Navitimer is surprisingly wearable too, and will suit a range of styles from tailored through to weekend casualwear. For the rest of us, things are little woolier. Position one of the numbers in your multiplication opposite the ten and the other opposite it. Then read off the result under the second number in that sum. If you want to know what 9 x 8 is for example, align 9.0 with the 10, put the 8 opposite and read off the number under the 8. Your guide is the moving outer scale, with the result on the fixed inner. So, for 30?4, set the 30 on the outer scale opposite 4.0 and read off the number above the 10, which should be 7.5. Find out the conversion rate before you attempt this trick and align that number on the outer ring with the 10. If you’re converting sterling into Czech koruna (because, Prague) then ?1 is on the inner scale and K28.50 is on the outer and the equivalent amounts in each currency are opposite each other on the two scales. Jednoduchy. The 43mm case size isn’t too intimidating either, as can be seen on the photos on this page. When it’s this new 8. There’s no slide rule here just pure uncomplicated 1930s cockpit-inspired loveliness. At 41mm, it’s a more elegant take on traditional pilot’s design and harks back to Breitling’s history of making dashboard instruments. All in all, a solid 8 (out of 10). The case dimensions are exactly the same; the slide rule is there in all its complex glory and the dial is protected by Plexiglas rather than sapphire crystal. The only concessions to modernity are the 30-metre water resistance and the SuperLuminova, though even that has been coloured specifically to give it an aged feel. Corporate tie-ins can err on the side of tacky, but this livery really works. Going tricolour makes the slide rule more legible, the mesh bracelet is just lovely and having the Pan-Am logo on the case back adds a touch of “if you know” to the design. Obviously a 24-hour timescale is the ideal complication for the jet-set, and it looks right at home on this iconic pilot’s watch. By keeping the dial pale, the attention is drawn to the outer rings, which means that while you may have to squint a little, it isn’t that hard to read. It’s ideal for men who don’t like watches to dominate the wrist (and who don’t mind their partner’s timepiece-stealing habits), while the hint of rose gold pushes this design into slightly more dressy territory. Black tie might be taking it too far, but a navy corduroy number would be just the (first-class) ticket. This logarithmic scale, which has its roots in 17th century astronomy, was adapted to measure the three most important units for pilots: STAT for standard mileage, KM for kilometres and NAUT for nautical miles. These three combined allowed pilots to easily do complex calculations, such as average speed and fuel consumption. You can find the 46-mm Transocean Chronograph Unitime with chronograph and world time functions for around 9,000 USD new and 7,400 USD pre-owned. Measuring between 44 and 50 mm in diameter and over 17 mm thick, these timepieces are best suited to larger arms and short sleeve shirts. The 50-mm Avenger Hurricane is constructed of lightweight black Breitlight, a material made up of composite fibers developed by Breitling. It is significantly lighter than stainless steel and very scratch-resistant. This timepiece costs about 7,400 USD new. Models in this price range include the in-house caliber B01. Older versions with the Valjoux 7750 are much less expensive and cost as little as 2,500 USD pre-owned. If you're lucky, you may even find one for under 2,500 USD. This pilot's watch, with its striking black dial, was originally introduced in 1952. Its scales enable a number of useful aviation calculations. For example, one can calculate speed, flight time, climb and descent rates, distance, and fuel consumption using the Navitimer. It's not just a watch, it's a specialized aviation calculator. Today, modern cockpit instruments can also provide this information, but they can't replace the Navitimer's charm.
