This manual describes how to use the SilverFast 8 ADF functionality. The new model differs from the predecessor model outwardly only at the back of the device: the Firewire interface was removed. In relation to the predecessor model the scanning speed was improved; the speed advantage is approximately 20. That's not a gigantic speed increase; but with a magazine of 100 slides however one hour time is gained in comparison to the predecessor model. The two devices originate from the same production and are being distributed under two different brands. While Reflecta has still numerous other film scanner models in the portfolio, Braun limited itself to just this one magazine slide scanner. Substantially the new Braun Multimag SlideScan 6000 differs from its predecessor in an improved sensor: It provides a nominally resolution of 5000 dpi - the predecessor model only reached a value of 3600 dpi. So the new model isn't just a facelift-version of the predecessor, as one used to know from many sectors today, but one can hope for technical innovations. The case was not changed by Braun Phototechnik. This is not inevitably necessary, since the scanner is built robust and designed funcionally, however, an optic difference to the predecessor would create a better overview in the field of magazine scanner. The hardware based dust- and scratch correction ICE is now named Multi-Touch and differs only in the software side from its predecessor's version - the change has just reasons in term of legal license. The reason might be that mounted slides in this type of magazines are hold relatively precisely in their position. However, with occasional jams one has to live with also. In such a case it might be better to resort the magazines consistently with the singular frame sorts. In practice there are again and again jams and interrupts, so that you have to restart the scanner. If you use universal magazines or standard Paximat magazines (i.e. not type S) in combination with thin slides like cardboard frames or CS frames, there is a small orange adaptor for the transportation pusher of the Braun SlideScan 6000. This adaptor must be shifted to front and provides with its wide bearing face a better support for thin frames. This prevents the transportation arm to move over the slide frame. Via this slide lift also singular frames can be shifted into the scanner and be digitized. Another useful feature is a small slide viewer on the right side of the front side. With this a slide can be checked very quickly and easily before beeing digitzed. In order to avoid time consuming corrections in the image editing program afterwards, the film material should be cleaned before scanning. This can be done very comfortably in the case of slide magazines by using a Anti Dust Spray, spraying through the singular frames. With this measurement the big dust particles will be removed. Of course, the Braun Multimag SlideScan 6000 also has the MagicTouch function in order to correct dust and scratch automatically, however, a pre-cleaning is recommendable by all means, since the automatic dust and scratch correction fails exactly there, were bigger dust particles cover detailed image information. The creation of such a thumb nail view of all slide frames in a magazine takes a long time, since the scanner has to work through the complete magazine, even if due to the very low preview resolution less time is needed than for a complete scan. The operation is not really intuitive. Therefore a certain time for learing is needed. It offers the user much more precise setting possibilities during the scan process with the Braun Multimag SlideScan 6000. We recognize that both achieve the same effective resolution of 3900 dpi at different nominal resolutions. The Nikon scans with 4000 dpi and provides 3900 dpi effectively, whilst the Braun Multimag SlideScan 6000 scans with 5000 dpi and provides 3900 dpi effectively. The fact that the Nikon achieves 97 of its nominal resolution in practice and so a subsequent data compression is not necessary any more, demonstrates the extremely high quality of the Nikon LS-5000 ED. We will have a look at it in the following. Therefore we have scanned the very dirty slide both with the Braun Multimag Slidescan 6000 and with the Nikon LS-5000 with automatic dust and scratch removal. In order to demonstrate the difference better, we show the red marked area in the following picture, which you can enlarge with a mouse click, in detail. Like at all film scanners the automatic scratch and dust correction is based on an additional infrared scan of the film.As written in the chapter software, the Braun Multimag Slidescan 6000 is available both with the manufacturer's software CyberView and with the professional SilverFast Ai Studio software. A special feature of the silverFast scan software is the IT8 calibration (see our page scanner calibration ). With that feature the colour errors of the scanner are measured with the help of a standardized target and stored as correction data in a scanner profile. We have made scans for comparison both with and without IT-8 calibration in order to demonstrate the quality increase. First you see the slide scanned with CyberView. It is noticeable that the image is very low-contrast and flat. The green tones are not so depp as they should be. That is different at the scan with SilverFast Ai Studio. Here the colours are significantly fresher and more dynamic. This shows that you get a significant increase in the image quality just by using a professional scan software. The colours become even better if you calibrate the scanner with an IT8 target. Here the green tones are much brighter and there is more drawing in the dark areas. How the IT-8 colour calibration works in detail and which target you should choose is explained on our FaQ-site about SilverFast. For comparison the view changes between the two scans with CyberView and SilverFast Ai Studio. On the CyberView scan, however, it is only a pale red. Also at the blue sky you can see the difference clearly. On the second image you can see well, that the grass, the cows and the sky have significantly more natural, strong colours. That's why the scanner don't has to glisten necessarily with a high scanning speed. During a batch scan the scanner usually is let alone, and after a while one looks if everything goes alright. That's why we have made a speed test and measured the scanning times. For our tests the scanner was connected to a Windows PC with 64 bit operating system, Core i7 processor and 8 GB RAM. The scannner was operated with the firmware version 1.12. Normally you scan your mounted slides with a nominal resolution of 5000 dpi in order to get the best possible results. When operation the scanner with SilverFast Ai Studio there is a scanning time of a bit more than 8 minutes, when oprating with CyberView a scan takes a bit more than 4 minutes. That means that a scan with SilverFast Ai Studio takes about the double amount of time compared to CyberView. The explanation is obvious: SilverFast makes with the raw data, which are provided by the scanner, much more complex calculations in order to achieve a significantly better image quality. The real scan, i.e. the time where the scannner works, also is oever after 3:30 minutes within SilverFast; the remaining 5 minutes are taken completely by the image processing algorithms of the SilverFast scan software. If you compare the image results of SilverFast with them of CyberView, you will at least understand, why you had to wait such a long time. If you consider that the goold old Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED is able to digitze 100 mounted slides in about 2 hours in excellent quality, the 14 hours, which are needed by the Braun Multimag SlideScan 6000, are a pretty long time. A scan process can be an index scan, a prescan or a main scan. If you choose the option multi-exposure within the scan-software, the film will be scanned twice and the scan counter increases by 2. The same holds for multi times scans. Concerning scanning speed it is not a fast sprinter, but the fact, that it can process a complete slide magazin in batch mode, makes the scanning speed rather unimportant. In terms of image quality and scanning speed, however, it is miles away from the top results of the much more expensive Nikon 5000. If the lines are appearing in different locations, it means the dust gets removed while scanning. Line in the same place could be because of glass is scratched. I researched automatic slide scanners and the most popular models I found were both from Pacific Image: Pacific Image PowerSlide Series 3650 (PS3650) and Pacific Image PowerSlide Series 5000 (PS5000). After doing a lot of googling I discovered that the Pacific Image PowerSlide has been rebranded and you can buy the same scanner under a different brand for a lower price. Braun Multimag SlideScan 4000 is virtually the same as the PowerSlide 3650, they are just stamped with different brands. Another identical scanner is the Reflecta DigitDia 5000. Braun Multimag SlideScan 4000 Pacific Image Powerslide 5000 (the newer version of the 3650, which still looks just like the Braun) The scanner arrived and the first issue I ran into was getting VueScan to recognize the scanner on my MacBook. I tried installing the Cyberview X5 drivers from here. Once I got that software to recognize the scanner I was able to get VueScan to work on both my OS 10.7 and 10.6 machines, which they are not saying is possible.I started scanning using the Paximat 50-slide magazine that came with the scanner and the first thing I ran into were some auto-crop issues where VueScan would not center the crop on the image. The whole image would be scanned but for some reason VueScan would not offset its crop and trim off the top edge of the slide. Since I’m doing archiving scans that is not going to work. After playing around with that I decided to just have it scan the maximum area and crop them by hand when I go through and edit them. I contacted VueScan’s author, Ed Hamrick, who is real responsive to questions, and he is interacting with me over why VueScan is not cropping correctly. To avoid dealing with that issue I just set the crop setting to maximum and plan to crop them by hand afterwards.The next issue I ran into using the 50-slide magazine was that somehow the slide was not parked in the right place when it was being scanned and part of the slide was not being scanned. After looking more carefully at the scanners action I discovered the reason was that the tappet, i.e. the long thin silver bar that feeds the slides into the scanner, was slipping off the edge of the slide and therefore not pushing it all the way into the scanner. I researched this issue and there are definitely others who have had this problem. Pacific Image addresses this problem on their FAQ page here. It is really unclear how much pressure they want you to put on the tappet to pull it in the direction it needs to be to center on the slide. I didn’t feel like they want you to bend it so it’s a bit confusing. I have a tech support email out to them inquiring about this. I’ll update the post if I hear something back. 50-Slide magazine Jam (see the white edges of the 3 protruding slides) I ran into an issue with the 50-slide magazine jamming when I left it running overnight. I came downstairs to find the machine stopped in the middle of the magazine. It’s real difficult to see what is going on with jams on this machine because everything is inside. From what it appeared, 2 slides were shoved into the same slot (where one slot won’t fit 2 slides). I tried to push the slide back into the scanner using a tweezers but I could not. I then tried to use a steak knife from the side trying to (carefully) stab the side of the slide’s cardboard frame and leaver it back in. I had some success getting the slide to move but still wasn’t able to get it to go all the way in. Slide Scanner surgery, steak knife style Eventually I got one of the 2 slides to go back in and just forced the magazine out of the way, bending the edge of the remaining slide in the process. I then discovered that the issue was that the scanner had pushed the slide onto the magazine’s divider and the cardboard had split, with one side of it on either side: Slide split in half I had some problems with the scanner jamming in that it was having a problem ejecting the slide. It wasn’t that it was hitting something when it was trying to push the slide into the magazine (which I had that problem at different times) but that it wasn’t even getting started. There is a little spring-loaded lever that pushes down on the top of the slide when it is inside the scanner. What was happening is that after the slide was inserted into the scanner it was not being allowed to come all the way down but was sitting on the top of the 50-slide magazine. This would cause the slide to rock forward when the arm tried to push it out and therefore causing it to bind up inside the scanner. The red arrow points to the black part that was getting caught on the top of the 50-slide magazine when the slide would be inserted into the scanner In order to fix this issue I taped some cardboard onto the scanner which would put some more space between the scanner body and the 50-slide magazine and then never had an issue with it again. Here’s my fix: My cardboard spacer to hold the cartridge away from the scanner (and the black slide arm on the top) With the cartridge installed. I have not heard of failures of this scanner or its predecessor, which I owned as well. I've heard of people scanning over 10,000 slides with them. I scanned over 3,000 with the previous model and it was used. I didn't have any professional company do any for me because it just wasn't an option to use them since I really needed to keep track of the notes on the box and convey as much information about the slide to the digital image since I didn't take these pictures. The controls can be arranged flexibly and freely on the screen according to personal preferences. All major functions can be operated quickly and easily. For example, if several originals are to be scanned one after another, the user can already set the image optimization options for the second scan while the scanner is digitizing the first original. Selective color correction means that a single color is selected and changed specifically, but all other colors remain unchanged. A mouse click in the preview window easily selects the color to be changed: SilverFast's Selective Color Correction is particularly intuitive. Particularly older images often show color casts that can be removed easily with GCC. The possibility to restrict modifications to half and quarter tones, allows effortless optimization of even those color shifts that are only visible in the very light or very shadowy image areas. Depending on material and intended purpose there is a different workflow that will be worked on with the WorkflowPilot step by step. The target is a slide with many small color fields corresponding certain colors. For every color field a reference color value is saved in a file. By comparing these reference values with the scanned actual color values it is possible to exactly color calibrate the scanner. Thus an individual color profile for the used scanner is generated which can be saved as ICC profile. This IT-8 calibration enables real true color scanning.
