It's unfortunate that there is no midrange control since the midrange could really use a boost, but overall the controls are very usable. I have to say that, while I love the concept of the simple three-dial face, in practice it is a bit cumbersome to use. Who needs a stereo in a small room (or an apartment if you plug into speakers) when you got this little gem. Powerful, good sound and very easy to use. The IPOD doc is definitely a big plus. I am really happy with this purchase. The only thing that I am not totally happy with is the time display. It's just too bright. It does have a feature where you can adjust the back light, but the number display still remains very bright. It is minor annoyance for those light sensitive (like myself). Other than that I am very please with this amazingly versatile clock radio. Unfortunately, the first one bought in 2011 mysteriously stopped working in 2015. It was strange, nothing has happened it was not dropped or immersed or misused in any way but it simply stopped working. My daughter's radio also mysteriously stopped working, although hers works after being unplugged for a while. It works for a while then once again it quits. Setting the alarms is a little bit more of a hassle, but my wife and I are still getting use to this new radio. My iPhone 4 doesn't seem totally compatible with the Duo interface, but tunes will play. The dose feature where you can touch anywhere on the rim of the body is excellent. Totally wonderful that fumbling with sleepy eyes to find a particular button to press. I've tried the other alignment adaptors to connect an MP3, but it just doesn't fit. I will look again on how to connect an external CD player. The sound is very good, but you have to be in the best spot in the house to get radio stations. I have one spot in the kitchen where stations seem to be blocked, and the external antenna did not help at all. In fact, the external antenna looks rather inexpensive (by which I mean cheap). I tend to turn the radio off rather than the volume down, so I cannot comment on the other reviews that had background humming. Empty room, bathrooms, and on a table in a small study are what this unit can do well. The two alarms are easy to set and use. The sound from the two speakers is good and the radio reception is as good as I've seen in a boom-box or table-top radio. Unless you find this on sale, be prepared to pay 220-250 dollars and keep in mind that this is not a newly released item. There may well be something coming out that is better. It would go from 10 to 60 minutes. I tried several different options and setups to fix this issue. When I decided I should return it for a different one, I had gone past the Amazon returns window. I contacted Boston and they had me contact another vendor that did their repairs. They made it sound like I had to pay for this repair. I contacted the repair company and left messages but no one has returned any of those calls. I have contacted Boston again but have not been able to get a hold of any one. Parallax 5.0 out of 5 stars I was limited in that it needed to be white, charge and play the iPhone (not just the iPod), have FM radio, remote, and small enough to fit in a book shelf. There aren't too many similar items with all of these attributes with an acceptable to great sound. We are using it in a 20' x 13' family room. The sound is excellent. It can liven the room without appreciable distortion. The remote covers all corners of the room. I can really pull in only one of the stations I like to listen to - the others are full of static making them unlistenable. After scanning aprox 6 stations it has frozen on station 12D 229.072. The only way I can get out of this state is by unplugging it and plugging back in. It then does the same again and freezes on station 12d 229.072. I have left it switched off again for 48 hrs and tried again with same result. Do you have a solution for this ? Answer questions, earn points and help others. Unlike most clock radios, the interface wasn’t littered with buttons, and the few controls it did have were intuitive and easy to use. Radio reception was excellent, audio quality was great, and Boston even got the smallest details right: the buttons were all soft rubber so they wouldn’t make noise when pressed—I didn’t have to worry about waking my already-asleep better half with loud, clicky buttons when setting an alarm. The Recepter remains one of my favorite gadget purchases, and it still sits on my nightstand.If you were to take the Recepter and add stereo audio, an iPod dock, and a bunch of new features, you’d get something much like the Duo-i. And in doing just that, Boston has preserved much of the Recepter’s simplicity and elegance, making the Duo-i my favorite “iPod alarm clock” yet. At 12.9 inches wide, 5.6 inches tall, and 8 inches deep, the Duo-i is chunkier than some of the iPod alarm clocks we’ve tested, but it’s still small enough to fit on most nightstands—or a kitchen counter or a desk, for that matter. The front of the system hosts left and right 3.5-inch speaker drivers behind color-matched metal grilles; a large white-on-dark-blue LCD display; the unit’s control knobs and buttons; a headphone minijack; and an auxiliary-input minijack (for connecting another audio source). Surrounding the front face is a strip of aluminum trim that acts as a touch-sensitive snooze bar: instead of fumbling for one button among many, you can fling your arm wildly at the Duo-i, and as long as your skin touches any part of the metal, you activate the snooze feature. The Duo-i’s dock uses USB circuitry for power, so it correctly charges iPhones as well as all dock-connector iPods except the third-generation model. And although the Duo-i is not specifically advertised as being iPhone-compatible, I used an iPhone 3G with it without incident; however, when I tested the Duo-i with an original (non-3G) iPhone, the system produced the familiar audible “buzz” whenever the phone accessed the mobile network. Finally, the back of the unit hosts a surprising array of connections. The Duo-i includes the necessary circuitry to support video output on the latest iPods and iPhones, and the system’s power supply is internal, so there’s no bulky power brick hanging off the back. There’s also a mini-USB service port that is apparently only for repair and service. Overall, the system feels solid and well-built. The Duo-i’s LCD display is clear and easy to read, and it automatically adjusts to ambient light. Even better, you choose the starting brightness level—on a scale of 0 to 20—and the auto-brightness feature uses that level as the baseline. The system provides two separate alarms; you can use one for weekdays and one for weekends, or one yourself and the other for another person. The alarms aren’t as full-featured as those on some iPod clock radios we’ve tested—for example, you can’t set each alarm to sound at different times on weekdays and weekends—but you can choose to wake up to an alarm tone, the radio, or your iPod. Whichever you choose, the volume starts low and gradually increases. There’s also a sleep function that lets you listen to audio for up to 90 minutes before the system automatically turns off. The Duo-i preserves the time, alarm settings, and radio presets even if the power goes out or the system is unplugged. Like its Recepter sibling, the Duo-i’s controls are among its standout features. Other than the five radio-preset buttons (1 through 5), the radio has only five controls: three knobs and two buttons, all covered in soft rubber and relatively quiet.
