This pedal had two separate shapeable overdrive circuits. read more He says he really only uses the Seymour Duncan Deja Vu Tap Delay, an Ibanez Tube Screamer. more Well, the crunch mode isn't very inspiring at all, infact i want to mod it. It's kinda harsh and buzzy no matter how i tweak it The lead side worth the climb. This is certanly one of the most powerful marshall sounding lead distortions i've ever heard, and i've heard many. Vintage indeed hehe Crunch channel not so much It is a smooth wailing sound that is sometimes hard to control but brings sweet sounds. The crunch channel is too sandy for me and I don't ever use it. This pedal will always be a keeper.http://www.vhz.cz/user-files/boston-acoustics-avp7-manual.xml However, I have found a use for Crunch mode: lowering the Drive and cranking the Level up makes for a nice boost, especially on tube amps. This pedal had two separate shapeable overdrive circuits. All sales are final. We cannot be held responsible if you ruin your pedal. I got ripped off by a buyer of my TR-2 mod. Said he wasn't happy with the mod so I offered to buy the TR-2 from him. When I received the pedal it was non-functioning. He had drilled the hole for the pot in the wrong place piercing the ribbon going to the depth pot and completely pulled 4 traces from the PCB. And he wanted to know why the mod sounded bad. Because of this I will no longer issue refunds of any type on mods. If you do not have the skills required to perform the mod then please let us do the mod for you. Monte Allums It’s just the nature of Electrolytic caps. Sometimes the leaking is actually visible. But Electrolytic caps can look okay and still be faulty. By replacing Electrolytic caps in older pedals you can actually improve the overall effect of that pedal. Honestly I was skeptical until I received an email from a client that was having issues after he modded his Boss BF-2 with one of my kits. He said the flange effect was barely noticeable. A couple of weeks later I received another email from the same client. The client said he had solved the issue by replacing all the Electrolytic caps in his BF-2. This peaked my interest so I started experimenting. I was astonished how some of my older pedals benefited from the cap upgrade. Noise seemed to be reduced and clarity and presence of the effect were enhanced. I am now offering these Cap Upgrade Kits for many of the pedals I offer kits for. In some cases some of these caps are already upgraded in the kits that I offer. But I am offering kits that replace all the Electrolytic caps for those that have not purchased my kits. They will benefit from upgrading the Electrolytic caps that I do not replace in my kits.http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/72281 You’ll find that some of these same caps are already replaced in the kits I offer. It’s a win win all around for those that want the maximum benefit when upgrading their pedals. But I didn’t stop there, when possible I have upgraded these Electrolytics with Metal Film and Tantalum. Not only do these caps have tighter tolerances but they will also last the life of the pedal. The Lead Mode stock is pretty good actually but the Crunch Mode not so much. The concentric pots allow you to have two separate settings for each mode. A foot switch can be used to select either mode remotely. Stock the gain is very compressed and flabby. I have added a 2N3440 Transistor to the Crunch Mode that adds saturation and harmonics. I found the Lead Mode to be way too compressed. After the mod the gain takes on this really saturated harmonic gain that just sings. Not too many pedals offer two gain modes and that makes the SD-2 a very unique pedal. I also offer a cap upgrade for this pedal. These older pedals suffer from caps leaking and going bad over time. The LEAD mode produces a thick, smooth sound while the CRUNCH mode produces a fat, crunchy sound. The pedal uses concentric potentiometers for Level, Tone and Drive so it’s possible to keep completely separate settings each mode. When in CRUNCH mode, a latching foot switch can be connected to the remote input. This footswitch will then switch between LEAD and CRUNCH mode while the main pedal switch will turn the effect on or off. In mode I the DS-2 sounds a bit like the DS-1 or the OS-2 in dist mode. Mode II gives a sound more in the direction of the HM-2 or MT-2. The DS-2 production moved from Japan to Taiwan as early as November 1989 so the Made in Japan version is a bit of a rarity. Controls Level Control adjusts the amount of signal going out to your amp. Mode I: produces a powerful distortion sound with flat characteristics, without being muffled even with volume turned down. The special Turbo Circuit serve to remove unpleasant shrill caused by distorted frequencies. Mode II: produces a sticky distortion with very unique characteristics in the middle range frequencies. The Turbo Circuit again create a powerful grunge distorted overload. Remote: You can plug in a Boss FS-5U footswitch to toggle between Modes I and II. The JB-2 also features an LED indicator that shows which effect is active (blue for Boss, red for JHS and purple when both circuits are activated). A 9-volt battery or 9V adapter powers the JB-2. PERFORMANCE I must be up front and admit that I own at least eight Boss Blues Drivers (I have a problem), so as expected, the Angry Driver makes me feel right at home with its included circuit. All the tone of the Blues Driver is intact here—the low-to-mid grind of its drive sound, a full bass response and a brilliant top-end sheen. On the flip side, the Angry Charlie has a more assertive voice, with a huge midrange bump and tube-like touch sensitivity in its medium-gain drive. It’s definitely a more boutique overdrive sound many players gravitate toward. Depending upon how you set the drive on its individual circuits, both series modes offer plenty of molten distortion sounds and fully cranked lead tones with cutting mids. Because you’re stacking circuits, it’s a beautifully unbridled tone that also works well for coaxing glorious feedback. Parallel is a great set-and-forget mode where I was able to dial in an arena rock distortion that sounded big and ultra-smooth. Setting the gain low on the JHS works well for clean and rhythm tones, and pushing the drive around two o’clock on the Boss circuit is ideal for soloing. THE BOTTOM LINE The Boss JB-2 Angry Driver combines two signature overdrives; the Boss Blues Driver and JHS Pedals Angry Charlie, into one versatile pedal capable of touch-sensitive gain and smooth distortion. Testing it side by side with my SD-1 I was surprised to find it had it's own voice going on with the OD mode while the lead mode is super saturated and more in line with a DS-1. Anyone else rocking one of these. I think it's a keeper for me! Clip I really don't know why BOSS has discontinued this GEM. The Lead sound (RED) is super duper nice.I'm still kicking myself for selling this to my buddy! The lead mode is righteous. MUCH better and more usable than a DS-1. Wasn't looking for a dirt pedal so I left. Later I thought about it went back and it was gone Surprised you don't here more about these. Rarely enjoy pedal distortions but this is an exception. Dual drive, one switch - how does that work? It was either weak or sloppy. The lead mode was really good. Much better than a DS-1. I loved the ability to switch modes using the footswitch. Boss should implement this on more pedals. Now it might be because it’s being run into a Marshall amp, but the tone in this video is outstanding! I think we forget sometimes how good some of these older Boss pedals were, especially nowadays when we get caught up in the more 'boutique' brands. I just got a Boss DS-1 40th over the weekend and it sounds righteous! It was alright. Concluded that the distortion section was a bit congested sounding and lacking low end. I used it with a Marshall Valvestate, VOX AC15 and Fender Vibrolux.I have to say, tone wise the OD channel never really convinced me. Too artificial, thin sounding and not transparent enough for me. In this respect, the Lovepedal OD11 perfectly replaced it. The Lead channel is a totally different beast, provided the tone is set around 9 to 10 o'clock, a really good distortion which is not be ashamed by the competition. You just need a bit of time to domesticate it. I finally sold it to an happy new user. I replaced it with the Lovepedal Superlead and could'nt be happier since. The external footswitch is a mandatory. I think we forget sometimes how good some of these older Boss pedals were, especially nowadays when we get caught up in the more 'boutique' brands. I just got a Boss DS-1 40th over the weekend and it sounds righteous!I recently picked up an anolgman Boss DS-1 and a Boss waza craft SD-1. Both of these sound as good as most other pedals out there. Boss is king. Dual-concentric potentiometers control drive, tone, and level for each effect, while a 6-position mode switch activates the JHS Angry Charlie, the Boss Blues Driver, a mode in which you can toggle between the two, two series modes in which you can run JHS into Boss or Boss into JHS, and, lastly, a mode for running the two circuits in parallel. Using a Gibson 1958 Les Paul reissue and a Fender Telecaster, the JB-2 stood out as the most versatile pedal overdrive that I can recall playing in quite some time—maybe ever. And it was joy at every turn for an OD enthusiast like yours truly. And while Angry Charlie users will note there are fewer tone-manipulation controls on the JB-2 than on the Angry Charlie V2 or V3, I didn’t feel the absence of extra control much, given all that the JB-2 offers. And the Boss mode effortlessly replicated the low-to-medium-gain drive, organic lower-mids, and sparkling highs that have made the underappreciated Blues Driver a great alternative to the Ibanez Tube Screamer for so many players. Whether setting up the Blues Driver to kick the amp over the precipice at edge-of-breakup tone, pushing it harder for warm blues-rock leads, or switching to the Angry Charlie for a more grunge- and alt-rock-approved snarl fest, the JB-2 does many jobs beautifully, and with great clarity and touch sensitivity. Fans of overdrive stacking will know the enormous potential of stacked drive circuits already. But what surprised me was how good the JHS, set pretty hot and stacked into the Boss set for lower gain, sounded—delivering a tightening lift and extra sizzle to an already meaty rock tone. That’s just one of the excellent voices on tap in this mode, however. And there are many sounds that few single-mode OD pedals can obtain on their own. If you simply don’t like either the JHS Angry Charlie or Boss Blues Driver on their own, fair enough—this unit might not excite you. But even then I suspect you’d be surprised by the entirety of “otherness” that the two circuits can achieve in parallel. It’s difficult to imagine any OD-loving guitarist not having a ball with this thing. Dave also fronts the band A Different Engine, and lives in Portsmouth, NH, with his wife and their two children. Boss style (asymmetric) We finally raised them when we were running out in mid 2020. Boss changed these to SMT (surface mount) construction in 2018 or so, but we have a few of the good ones still in stock. If you send one in for a mod, make sure it's the old style, the circuit board fills up the whole pedal on the old ones, you can see by removing the bottom plate. This is the yellow pedal, not the orange DS-1 Distortion. The yellow SD-1 has the same basic design as a Tube screamer but with asymmetrical clipping. Ibanez told me that Roland (Boss) has a patent on asymmetrical clipping, which gives it a bit more volume, harmonics, and crunch. With Ibanez style clipping, it sounds very much like a TS-808, but still has a touch more edge and drive available. With Boss style, it gets yet a bit more volume, edge, and harmonics. The Brown option is standard on the SD-1 as it really helps to smooth out the sound. I thought the silver mod would be too expensive for this pedal but people really like the Boss pedals (they are more reliable than the Ibanez). He likes them a lot, so we have been doing more silvers for other people. We now install a super bright GREEN LED for this FROG mod (looks cool too!!). I miss Frog, I used to hear from him every several months when his TS9 switches would die, now he never calls. It's the sameBypass sound improvement Listening carefully, I was able to confirm this, though I andIt can be heard on any SD1 pedal, the mod did not affect it.SD1 pedals sold).I tested itI studied the schematic and layoutAlso it is a very reliable mod as there are no partsIf we have previouslySome people reallyAlso the SD-1 seems to have a bit more low end after theThe silver mod improves the bypassEbay beware: From looking at the pictures, they seem to have the very 1st version of This mod does not sound so good, Mod your pedal Already use the DS 1 pro mod which is all I need. Still had potential. Instead of doing the silver I did the 808 vintage mod. I opted for symmetrical clipping so its smoother than the stock SD 1. I like it. I have it paired up with the DS 1 pro mod (think Jeminie Distortion). Essentially the way I have them, they're very similar though I like having two options for lead boosts. Maybe one day I'll rock it with the silver mod though for now, I like it. Thank you, AM. Edit: had to to give this rascal all five stars. Amazing how an already nice sounding SD-1 sounds with the 808 mod. Brilliant. Was this review helpful to you? I now own 3 of them (as well as a Silver TS9) and couldn't be more happy with how naturally musical the tone is that they provide. By using the gain knob you can go from an almost transparent boost to a fairly heavy overdrive without losing any of your picking nuances. On top of that, Mike provides extremely quick and friendly customer service. You can tell that he really is proud of his work and will do his best to make you proud of your tone. Thank you Mike!! Was this review helpful to you? I was always a huge fan of tubescreamer but I found them sometime way to gritty and dark sounding. IMO the sd-1 is a hybrid between a ts-808 and a bd-2(the modded ones) I mainly use this pedal as a clean boost( I like boosts with some bottom end) or as my main gain channel. When using the pedal as gain channel is boost it with my mxr dyna comp with high output an little compression.Full chords still sound clear to me. Was this review helpful to you? I run this into a Beano boost, to get my Blackmore tones. Analogman just makes the pedals sound great. Anytime I get tired of my sounds, I look to see what else Mike has cooking. Was this review helpful to you? I have the Ibanez 808 mod pedal and like that too, but wanted something with less midrange and the silver does the trick. I play mostly jazz and this pedal for the modern jazz repetoire adds a great texture, nice distortion while maintaining a round tone,ie less effected as advertised. It's also a great bang for the buck. You won't be dissapointed. It's also one of two pedals recommended by Mike when you get on the KOT waiting list and I can see why.
