Bigskeme a hobbyist user from oakland, ca usa writes: I was always able to figure out the older versions of the boss dr rhythm I have played with many versions before the 660 and have never owned a manual. I even have the 660 figured out to a certain extent but I changed the sounds and now they sound distorted and horrible and what ever I did I can't figure out how to undo so I am ready to dispose of the miniscule piece of machinery. I am wondering if the problem is no manual or not having the original adapter. Its gotta be better to buy drum machines brand new. Rating: 1 out of 5 posted Tuesday-Sep-24-2002 at 06:04. Flash tool for xperia.http://afreecountry.com/?q=node/3829 The effects are not wonderful but surely usable. The instrument is very dynamic and the frequency response is wide and bright. The sounds are covering all the needs, featuring all the classic drum machine hits. My only criticism is that is possible to hear a little (very little) noise due perhaps to the converter. But in the 'real' professional life there is no problem. I recommend it, it's a classic and, for now, roland has anything in the market that is beating this. Rating: 5 out of 5 posted Saturday-Sep-07-2002 at 20:59. I bought this off ebay cuz it was a good price and ive heard samples. Alot of people bitch about the sounds but i think they are pretty good esp after adding effects and whatnot. Anywho my main gripes are how this thing looks like (by its 4x4 button setup) that its going to be an easy programable 16 step sequencer. Tis not the case you gotta hit the FWD button to go on to the next step and (for me) i dont like how the steps are named. I guess they did this for more pro people than me, that just like to call it button 5 er whatever but heres how it goes 100, 124, 148, 172, 200 thats where on a 16 step sequncer would be button 1,2,3,4,5. Takes some getting used to no huge deal. But i also like to see when i hit a specific pad all the places that that pad are at and you cant unless you scroll through all the steps. Would you like to try it too? Please try again later. Something went wrong. Fully working - Boss DR-550 Dr Rhythm Drum Machine incl Mains Adaptor, 2 manuals. Very versatile and easy to use. To start viewing messages,Now have purchased a Yamaha USB-Midi Interface UX16 and after installing the driver, looks to be connected fine. Now the question. How can I playback midi files from the PC through the DR 660.https://www.generalutilities.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/16295934d270b3---complete-lab-manual-for-ccnp.pdf I do not even know how this all works. So far I have tried several midi software which do show the device is connected properly. However,I do not know the terms as I am new to midi interfacing. So far I have MIDI-OX installed and ready to install CUBASE LE 6 just because I have them. Hope this makes sense, any help would be appreciated. JimmyZIt doesn't accept anything through it's midi in except midi clock. It would need to accept midi note numbers for it to be used that way, and it does not. In other words, what you're willing to get dirty and hungry for doesn't exist. You could use it's midi clock capabilities to sync it with Cubase LE 6, but then you'd either need to use either the preset patterns or, as a guitarist, get some rudimentary drum programming skills. If I was you, I'd sit with the machine for an hour and see how far you get. Start with a blank one or two bar pattern, make sure the metronome is enabled and start with the kick drum.Guess what? It plays the drum patterns exactly like the original tune through the DR 660 connected to my stereo. Been waiting 20 years for this as to avoid the lame manual beat programming.or worse yet.dealing with real drummers who never seem to TRY. It works great now after a trip to the House of Guitars and asking the guru in the shop. Now to get the bass tracks functioning and start jammin some guitar.Your DR-660 DOES accept midi note numbers. That's one to file away in the 'never make THAT mistake again' folder. I'm a guitar player too and my 'lame manual beat programming' skills are not lame at all. In fact, I've been at it for 30 years and if I wanted to I could program a part that an expert drummer couldn't tell was machine-generated. Kudos to you though for not giving up and seeking a second opinion. I know a lot about midi, but obviously not as much as I think I do!https://localhost/travestismexico/paneldecontrol/files/8753c-network-analyzer-manual.pdfIt works great for what it is and since I have no patience programming drums into the unit, the easy way is good enough for me and now enjoy playing guitar to some tunes I have liked over the years. For whatever reason,it has renewed my dwindling passion of guitar playing. Now I have another question.since the DR 660 also has bass, wondering now if the bass tracks can also playback with the drums.that would make things even better. Many midi song files have bass tracks. So far using the pad bank button,I can hear the bass tracks, but the samples are not bass.It seems it plays other percussion samples and can not seem to assign the pads to the bass samples. You seem to have this sort of stuff down to a science.maybe you know a solution. Also notice the drum kits change every time I restart the same song. Hope this makes sense. There is an easy way to do this - according to the DR-660 manual, the machine sends out program changes. First make sure the midi out of the DR-660 is hooked up. Put Cubase in record for a bar or so, select the kit you want on the front panel and press enter if needed. Now take Cubase out of record and play your midi drum track back. As far as bass lines, that would require your DR-660 to 'listen' on 2 separate midi channels. This is because individual drum hits use midi notes as triggers, while bass lines use midi notes melodically. I don't think the DR-660 is that advanced midi-wise, but I've been wrong before. Thanks for the info regarding bass and drum tracks played together from midi files. It would have been great if it was capable to do so.Suppose I could be elaborate and run things through the 4 track and create my own.but too much like work for what I want it for.I play guitar for fun not work. It is called Sekaiju and is a free software and very easy to use.So that is it for me and does more than I expected as far as what I need here.Hope at least this info will help others looking for some basic midi file playback options using the DR 660.https://pikewallis.no/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/16295935dcc42c---complete-learn-to-play-bass-manual.pdf JimmyZUser Alert System provided by Super PM System provided by. But the built in effects and the sound editing capabilities make it extremely flexible. I think this is the first Boss drum machine with bass samples, so you can create an entire rhythm track with just one hardback book sized lump of plastic. The samples include 808 and 909 sets (the 808 kick is a bit lacking, but cowbell!) and according to a random piece of research it was designed by the legendary Roger Linn, which means it's at least as good as all the other things he's designed and released under someone else's name. Learn more Thanks in advance!I don't really think it offers much as a machine. It was the first device I ever owned which I learned the basics of MIDI and I still have it (since 1994). The sequencer is pretty basic, but easy.Sounds very bright (like my R70), not like an R8I don't really think it offers much as a machine. Mines been sitting in a cupboard for years now as I just haven't bothered to get a new PSU but I paid ?65 then.I tried sampling the 808 bassdrum from my dr660 into my MPC2500 and could not get the sample to sound absolutely 100 percent identical to the original source no matter how hard I try. There's always something slightly inferior about the sampled version playing back in the sampler. And like you said, the sample reacts differently (notably in the attack transients) from the original when pitching up or down within the sampler (even if I loop sustain the tail and use the sampler's envelopes to control the decay). I get 90-95 percent there but never 100 percent dead on with the sampler. FYI, on a side note. The basic tone of the drum samples sound Identical on both machines. However, the parameters of each machine can affect the sounds differently. For example, the maximum decay on the 808 kick is quite a bit longer on the dr660 than on the R70. There is a big difference in the tone of many of the sounds, especially in the bassdrum.BAWANIINT.COM/ckfinder/userfiles/files/8753a-manual.pdf With that said, I like the sound of both versions because they both have a unique character with good beefy lowend. My DR660 was my first drum machine and it is still part of my midi setup to this day and always will be. I had it since 1998. The little internal lithium battery that keeps the memory recently died (after 18 years!!) on it and I need to get it replaced. That's why I'm so glad I backed up all of my kits and sequences on this machine years ago via sysex!!! I can now successfully restore them anytime. This is a fun machine to work with whether it's used as a sound module or as a standard drum machine. Did you know Roger Linn design the sequencer. I was surprised (in a good way) to find that out later. I don't have a Roger Linn MPC but I do have my DR660 hehehe.Mines been sitting in a cupboard for years now as I just haven't bothered to get a new PSU but I paid ?65 then. Right now I record most of my guitarstuff onto a 4-track cassette recorder, but I wanna start programming drums soon to accompany the guitar (not the typical repetitive backing track though) WITHOUT using my laptop. This probably sounds pretty abstract and may be more complicated in practice, but it’s the basic idea. As renoise is a sampler any sound would be available to you. If you could find the sample pack containing all the samples from DR660 you would have the same sound set in renoise. The sequencer in renoise is more difficult to learn ( triplets, delay commands, delay column ). It is possibly not as good for recording beats that have been tapped out live ( but still fine once you quantize or tidy up your recordings a bit ). It is much better in terms of sounds available ( any sampled sound ). It has a way more advanced sequencer ( possibly the most advanced sequencer in the world ). More DSP effects are available for shaping the sound of your drums. Obviously you will need to use your laptop to use renoise. DR660 is fairly limited, lots of accoustic drum sounds. It will still sound like a drum machine and not a real kit when you play guitar to it, but it wont sound good in electronic styles. They are alright though. Not too bad, not too good. Personally I’d go for renoise and find the DR660 samples online somewhere, then use a pad controller to record drumbeats. Instead of a 4-track it would make more sense to use the laptop with an audio interface ( probably cubase, but ableton would also be fine ). Much less of a headache. They are great! I don’t wanna do hiphop stuff (nothing wrong with that), but I want to have detailed, multi-layered stuff going on drum-wise. The drum sounds are like in a rompler but you can tweak their most used parameters. For live sounds and jazz etc this is really unmatched in any hardware so far as far as realism is concerned. You can also use it as a midi controller. Most drum machines emulate the rigid grid based electronic drums and won’t really play well with real drums without significant layering done for you which btw comes out of the box as a rompler with DR 880. Things like Groove feature, realistic velocity changes, ghost notes, shuffle and swing are all there. Step edit is not at all fiddly as many would imagine. It’s basically number based wherein you dial the next position to enter the pad number by pressing that particular pad sound and it goes to the next quantized value you set right there on the display or you can go back and forth in units. You can copy paste events very easily, just go to the edit page by pressing Edit and choose Copy. It also has a visual display of a dotted grid which makes sense once you get used to it. MPC 500 does not have any of these features and it’s totally a sampler sequencer and not even a rompler. Ghost notes etc you have to manually program into MPC, in DR 880 the layered pad samples do it right out of the box. In fact in tandem you can use MPC and DR 880 to make up convincing jazz drum sequences with rides and ghost notes and flame and all that. Defeats 1000 for portability by miles. This unit becomes the rompler for MPC at least in my setup in addition to software plugins and sample packs. The MPC captures swing better than DR 880 though so if groove is what you looking for then sequence in the MPC or record line out from DR 880 direct to MPC and chop from there. Phrase chop does not work on 500 but it does very well on 1000. Superb for live instrumentation and hip hop sampling. I’m afraid the DR 880 doesn’t have a built-in sampler afaik and one can only use the stock sounds. I prefer to have everything in one box, you know.Where I live, the 1000 isn’t much more expensive than the 500 and it includes the JJOS which I used a few years ago on an MPC 2500, so I still have good memories of that. All my guitarstuff will be recorded directly into the 4-track and from there I’ll play around with it. I want it that to be as raw as possible. The sampler and sequencer should take care of the drums (and perhaps bass) though. And what are your thoughts on the Electribe ES-1? With enough time spent on it, I imagine one can push it pretty far to places most people wouldn’t expect it to go. Just a theory though. Is that a solid sampler. It doesn’t need to be the most complex featurewise, but it should do the job that Renoise does (comparatively, perhaps with some limitations). It’s very cheap here and I can imagine combining it with a DR660 or QY700 if need be. I’m gonna do some googling on it now. Changing your mind per-minute like that, you remind me of me Thankfully I am able to return that Volca I bought the other day, and continue saving the cash to buy my own ESX as planned. If you get impatient like I just did, and buy something else just because the other is too expensive or currently out of your reach, then all you’ll do is set yourself back even longer, cause you won’t be able to return second-hand gear if you make a bad decision. It’s sucks to be poor, but it’s the way it is, and the only way to get anywhere if you’re poor, is to be determined. My honest opinion is that the KORG Electribe ESX-1 SD is the perfect machine for you (and I do mean perfect), so no point me commenting on the other stuff cause I wouldn’t do it that way when the ESX exists. Having the ESX would mean you have everything you want to do in a single box, and that single box could not be any more intuative to use than it already is - it’s a great machine. Seek-out tutorial videos on how to use the sequencing etc. If you do that, you’ll soon get an idea of how crazy easy it is to use, and how well designed it is. I think KORG were really on the ball when they designed that one, it’s a great machine - one of those products they “got right” B) There are a few things I don’t like about it, but I just remembered: What about the RS7000. You probably heard about that already, didn’t you. I think it’s the QY700 combined with a sampler and a synth engine. Huge unit, but very powerful. Because if I want more complicated stuff (fx etc), I’ll just use Renoise and Reaper. It’s a simple, limited, all-in-one unit with a sampler and a sequencer. It’s rather small, portable and cheap. I can get my 4-track, a guitar and the MPC and make entire tracks just using that. And the MPC fits into the 4-track mentality: simplicity and limitations. That’s why I was so attracted to the DR 660 in the first place, but it’s got no sampler, so I ruled that out. x) If I don’t like it, I can sell it. It won’t leave such a big hole in my wallet for the time being. I’ve edited out that post from the Volca thread and just added a new one. Why did you give it a chance again. Maybe you wanted to like it. x) Check out MpcStuff if you haven’t so far. Check out MpcStuff if you haven’t so far. The pads are not very sensitive for live drumming. It does have a guitar input though and audiotracks if i remember correctly. It’s like an old piece of hardware that still keeps constantly evolving. I’ll still use the laptop, but whenever I do, I’ll just use Renoise and Reaper and I’m totally satisfied with that and have no need for any hardware with that setup. The 4-track was the first thing I got and I love the attitude and philosophy of it. Yeah, 4 tracks aren’t THAT great compared to modern recorders, but that’s not the point. Same with the MPC 1000. I get your point though.:3 It’s probably irrational and a bit insane, but that’s the way my brain works. I’m not sure why I can’t just do things like other people. Another possible limitation of the 550's approach, depending on what sort of rhythms you want to create, is that you can't combine triplet and non-triplet values (triplet 8ths and straight 8ths, for example). Creating a DR550 Song is easy. You just scroll through the Song steps entering the required pattern number for each step. If you hit Start or Continue in Song Edit mode, the 550 repeatedly plays the pattern you've entered at the current step, which quickly allows you to see if you've chosen the right pattern. You can also start playing a Song from any step while in Song Play mode by scrolling to that step and then hitting Continue. You can also set an Initial Tempo value (40-250bpm) for each of the eight Songs - which, of course, only applies when the 550 is set to internal sync. The drum machine has a global tempo value which defaults to 120bpm each time you switch the machine on, but as soon as you select a Song that value changes to the Song's initial tempo value. Consequently, if you're working to and fro between Pattern and Song modes. Pattern mode automatically assumes whatever initial tempo value the Song is set to. MIDI THE DR550 CAN be set to internal sync or slaved to incoming MIDI clocks. For the purposes of playing the drum machine's sounds from an external MIDI source you can set it to Omni receive (all channels), or to one of the 16 MIDI channels (it defaults to channel 10, the channel which Roland have ordained as the rhythm channel on their instruments). For MIDI performance purposes you assign instrument pads rather than the actual instruments themselves to MIDI note numbers, which means that if a DR550 instrument isn't assigned to one of the 48 possible pads then you can't play it via MIDI. The 550 comes with a default set of pad-to-note assignments, but you can alter these to suit your own preferences.
