He covers the Inside Passage and Southeast Alaska in depth. There is sufficient coverage of the balance of the state, especially the coastal regions. I heartily recommend it to Alaskan cruisers, visitors and dreamers alike. The photographs are also great. This book is not only for people who are planning an Alaska cruise, but anyone who is interested in Alaska. It adds much detail about the history and culture of the splendid land from Seattle and Vancouver northward, particularly for the myriad coastal towns and harbors where cruise ships call or sail nearby. If you are looking for a dry listing of hotels, restaurants, and trinket shops, this is not the book for you.http://asomarecuador.com/images/bose-vcs-10-manual.pdf If you want to expand the sensory impact of your trip to Alaska, your money will be well spent on this companion guide. It was interesting to follow our route on the included map and know what we were cruising by, as well as to anticipate what lie ahead. We were able to take wonderful photographs of lighthouses, etc. This is a wonderful book to read both before you go and to take with you on the ship. It has many interesting stories about the state. Mr. Upton has been a resident of Alaska and offered tips on things that would have been unknown to the average tourist on a cruise ship. For instance, excursions may be bought on the ship but are usually rather expensive. He pointed out that sometimes you can go on the dock and find similar excursions at a better price by local vendors. He also said that sometimes cab drivers would give you a one-on-one tour for very little as well. We did this in Juneau and had a very interesting Klingit driver who told us many local stories and took us to some out of the way places for some great pictures. He also told which excursions were really worthwhile to spend your money on.(The Skagway RailRoad) A map comes with the book and shows you mile by mile where the ship is. Other helpful things that he talked about in the book were the background of each of the towns that the ship visited as well as the glaciers, etc. He also talked about the fishing and the wildlife in the different areas. If you can only afford one book for your trip to Alaska, this would definitely be the one to buy. Learn more - opens in a new window or tab This amount is subject to change until you make payment. Pursued by the authorities as runaways, and with Lars's health failing, the three experience one adventure after another as they inch their way North, through terrifying winter storms and frightening encounters with strangers. Just 25, Joe Upton was the youngest guy aboard when the 104-foot Flood Tide pulled out of Seattle in March 1971 headed for Dutch Harbor with 700-pound crab pots stacked three deep on her deck. The top-heavy load caused some anxious moments later when the vessel iced up. The crew went to work with hammers and baseball bats as howling winds roughed up the seas and the Flood Tide rolled from side to side, threatening to capsize while everyone held their breath. BERING SEA BLUES is a thinking-man's book of the TV series 'Deadliest Catch' because Joe Upton did a lot of thinking that winter working 12- to 14-hour days in weather that would scare most mariners away. He figured if he challenged fate in the Bering Sea crab fishery too long he would wind up either rich or dead, or both. Joe Upton, author of the forthcoming memoir Bering sea blues: A Crabber's Tale of Fear in the Icy North, discovered this first hand. Upton, just 25, was the youngest guy aboard when the 104-foot Flood Tide pulled out of Seattle in March 1971 headed north with 700-pound crab pots stacked three deep on her deck. It was a top-heavy load that caused anxiety every time the vessel iced up and the crew scrambled on deck with baseball bats and hammers to break off the ice as vessel rolled sluggishly from side to side, and everyone held their breath. This is going to be a hell of a season, Upton thought to himself. And it was. Upton writes about the crew’s relentless 12- to 14-hour days setting and hauling pots, searching for those elusive pockets on the ocean floor that could yield as much as 70 tons of crab. For the lucky ones there were huge financial rewards. For others, surviving was their reward. In his memoir from that season, Upton explores the origins of the Bering Sea's king crab fishery, predating TV’s “The Deadliest Catch,” shares his own experiences, and reflects on the rich history of the North Pacific, the spectacular emptiness of Alaska’s remote southwest coast, and nature’s maelstrom on the meanest sea on Earth.Para mas ayuda, consulta la pagina de ayuda de Conocimiento Comun. There was a transition year when John Upton's books started including far more color pictures (7 or 8 years ago). So if you are ordering John Upton's books - make sure you get a later version. Rachel's book was very colorful when I saw it with large pictures which helps me when reading a travel book. I am leaning towards Upton's book because of the map and mile by mile details. It's easy!
