The studio space that we have is pretty small, and with only a quick play around so far, I have found that these lights are incredibly bright - even at the lowest possible settings. This is fine for small apertures, but a bit of an issue with trying to do any kind of shallow DOF (ie wider than f4), and to have any kind of ratio between key and fill. I guess that I might have to use some neutral density gels on the heads to dampen them down a bit. Any suggestions? On the flip side, shooting at ISO50 and f20 doesn't seem to be an issue Does anyone have any experience with this lights that they can share. Any experience with the flash duration for freezing motion. Any suggestions on the best uses for these lights. We do a mixture of portraiture as well as some commercial work. I'd contact flashclinic in NY (or any other talented service facility) and ask them to reduce the capacitor power by about 50 or even more.None of which helps you in a small studio. One trick is to point one flash head out the door, sucking off power so it does not hit the subjects. Another is to drape a white towel over the front of a softbox. That sucks up a lot of light, does not cost very much,.I can't help but feel your were suduced by all that lovley power rather than thinking about what type of subjects and modifiers you'd be using with these lights. To me, I think 250Ws or at a push 500Ws heads would have been more then enough. It also doesn't help that these old packs never dropped their power to very low levels as modern heads do now They were designed in the film days when multi flash techniques were used to build up the exposure when 3000Ws was still not enough. I was always under the impression that Buff was simply using an additional method of calculating his lights' output. If all other manufacturers used the same method it might be a worthwhile comparison, but as far as I'm aware the AB1600 is nowhere near the power of 1600WS monolights. More like the 640WS stated. The poor efficiency in this conversion by manufacturers has given rise to the term EFFECTIVE WATTSECONDS. And his naming system would imply a marketing scheme to make people think the B400, B800, and B1600 are 400, 800 and 1600ws lights due to their EFFECTIVE output, when really they are 160, 320 and 640 respectively. He is disguising a marketing ploy behind nomenclature and a new way of measuring and defining output. He's saying output shouldn't be measure in WS, but in Lumens. Why else would he call the B1600 the B1600, and not the B640. And you have a point. If other companies made the same claim, their lights would be listed as being even MORE powerful. What I do know, is if you check out the guide numbers on PCB's B1600 and Einstein, they are not that close to other company's (Profoto, Norman and Speedotron) 1200ws heads. I'm not bagging on PCB or AB. They are good lights. But it's obvious some people think the B1600 is 1600ws and the Einstein is only 640, when they are both the same — 640ws. That was my original point.How about continuous lighting like HMI's? You get a lot of output for a long time. Or alternately, if you are using long exposures, how about multiple pops of lower power strobes. Do you shoot outside. How about big reflectors to move sunlight to where you want it-I'm thinking 6x6 or bigger silvers on frames. I like the shots of the mobile darkroom. No driving out to war zones, ok. Targeting is much better today than in the Crimean War.It's interesting as I've done exactly as you suggested and incorrectly assumed the WL X3200 was 3200ws. I can't take the chance with those. In regards to continuous lighting, I've been using it in the studio for some time with banks of 7x105Watt CFL's and getting 8 second exposures at f4.5-5.6 (depending on the lens). I use large reflectors and ambient light. That's fine as long as you don't mind expressionless faces and avoid working with children etc. I can get a 1 second exposure in full sunlight at f8 but it's limiting. When working with high-output strobes, I've finally opened those doors that have remained closed to this process for so long. I have so much planned work to do with subjects that I haven't been to work with yet. I need one pop, no more.or the people I need to shoot will move. The mobile darkroom is my pride and joy. No war zones but a lot of travel.I just saw a 1600ws pack for a few hundred dollars. It was an older pack 404 I think and flash heads also show up at reasonable prices. The inversion is carried out in the pack. Voltage adapters are transformers that transform the voltage up or down as needed. If he sticks with Broncolr, Elinchrom, Speetotronic, Balcar or similar he will have the output he needs at a price he can afford.
